Just so you know, Anaheim has not had a spend-to-the-cap type budget, which is why they've been willing to trade for some guys in recent years who have had bigger cap hits than their actual salary (such as Blake). As such, the cap is NOT what matters more to teams like that. The more you know!

As an objective fan I think it's a terrible deal and I like discussing hockey, so here I am. As a Detroit fan who doesn't like Anaheim (don't really hate them either, indifferent I guess) it doesn't really bother me if Anaheim wants too overpay. Seems like Ducks fans like this deal for whatever reason, so good for them I guess.

How many teams do lack a top #1 center? That sets the bar!

This has been entertaining.

Since they can't sign him for 12 years, this was expected.

He would have gotten more.

He's a 6'4" elite playmaking center who has consistently scored at over a point per game pace since becoming a #1 center.

Cap hit is higher because they can't structure contracts like before. Get that through your minds, please.

The Ducks had a choice - sign him before the lockout to a circumvention contract and have a 6-7M cap hit until he's 40 (like everyone else is doing) or pay him his actual fair salary in cap hit until he's 35 (and likely still somewhat productive). Pretty easy call for a small market.
The money is a little high, but I'm more put off by the years. The last few may be really tough to swallow or even require a buyout. I also wonder if this will impact the team's ability to spend elsewhere, especially if they have an internal budget to deal with with.

They couldn't let Getlaf go, that much I agree with. But it would have been nice to see him take a little less. I know it doesn't happen often but some players who are happy where they are have done it.

Look, there's no more cheat contracts. A lot of star players are getting $10M per in actual salary. This is the new normal. You can't compare his contract to those signed pre-lockout.
This absolutely. No back diving contracts means higher cap hits for top players and more parity as the rich teams wont be able to artifically keep the cap down on those top players.

Getz would have gotten more on open market. Salaries are going up, so this deal is expected.

Just for interest, what do you think about Zetterbergs deal moneywise? By taking his salary and age I'd prefer Getzlafs.

So he is making .5 per less than Crosby or Malkin? Well then they should easily be able to fit Perry there too.....

My thoughts exactly. This guy knows whats up. 8 years X 7 mil would have been acceptable.

Are you sure? I mean, he scored 11 goals last season, and apparently he's only going to score 5 in a couple of years.

Zetterberg is my favorite current player and I absolutely hate his deal. Way too long and for a guy that has had injury problems in the past, it could get ugly when he reaches 36 or 37.

no he isn't, Crosby makes 12 mil and it will be fun to see your reactions when Malkin needs to be resigned.

For Malkin you open the safe, and let him date your daughter.

I said five or six years, thats more than a couple if you didn't know. And yes I'm sure. It's not a guarantee he will decline and if he does for the last two years then a salary worth $1.25 million less would be a lot easier to swallow and budget around.

8 more years for Getzlaf ? What a joke !

He was declining in the last three seasons, and now he is having a good 20 games and he signs that ?

Another lockout, please !

That is a steep price. Somewhat surprised there was no discount offered, especially with Anaheim having an internal cap.

Lemieux just got Crosby kicked out of his basement and now you want Malkin moving in? Give the guy some privacy!

Seriously though, it's going to be funny listening to oblivious fans when Malkin wants (and gets) a max contract with the max cap hit.

Declining what? Last year was a down year, no question, but the prior two he was still over 1 ppg, and the latter of those two years he had the highest pts/gm of his career, no?

So we've moved on to pedantic. Clearly, the Ducks are comfortable spending this amount. They know what their budget looks like. Their long-term plans have included Getzlaf, and future signings. Maybe the Ducks, a team that sees significantly more of Getzlaf than you do, feel he's worth it. You can bet there are other GM's out there who agree.

Well he's certainly paid like he's the best center in the west.
