In his first full year he was pretty raw but you could see his ability to hang on to the puck and battle with opposing players.
Last year you saw glimpses of offensive skills to go with is size.
This year he is physically mature and starting to find his groove as a solid top two line center.
He kills penalties, takes key face offs. I remember watching him last night battling along the boards and thinking to myself- this is the definition of being tough to play against. He can be a handful for opposing D along the boards.
This kid is becoming an excellent player right before our eyes. Very highly skilled and very underrated.

I love the way he's been throwing his body around and piling up the hits. Yesterday, right after Galchenyuk got hit, Eller hit the player (don't remember who) that hit Galchenyuk.

And you know what? Even if he only has one bad game in his next ten, they will show up that night. And then they will disappear one or two days after

Injuries aside, do you guys think hes better than Perron? Eller or Perron if you could redo the trade?

Now ? Yes. Over their careers ? No way.

Perron would be redundant here. Eller is exactly what we need.

I think it's close but I'd still give the edge to Perron because he has produced more.

I think Eller has more room to grow though. He's our second most talented forward. Or maybe third. But it's not like Galchenyuk and Patches are scrubs so its not a knock on him.

I'd value them pretty equally. Both are great players at what they do. I guess it gets down to the team needs.

Pretty much what I was going to say. Perron has the higher offensive ceiling, but a big two way beast has been missing from this team for so long. I believe Perron has also had some concussion trouble, which might make it a bit closer than it would otherwise be.

I think they are on the same level personally. We could use Perron, but everyone wanted a big physical center, and that's what Eller is. I know Perron is Quebecois, but Eller is grittier.

Perron will probably be a better scorer throughout his career, Eller is more well rounded.

You think ? I love Perron but I can't see how he could be more than what he his right now... (Not a knock on him he's a good second line winger.)

I don't think he's far off what he's going to be, but I think he can potentially reach 60 points. He's a good second line winger though, I don't see him taking it to the next level after that.

Obviously I meant games, not points.

Eller already had the equivalent of two full seasons in experience, so you didn't need a crystal ball to know he needed more ice time with better teammates and opportunities.

Yeah, exactly

If a superstar goalie gets hated when he has a couple of bad games, you can bet anything that an (less and less) "unproven" young guy will get his share of hate if he plays bad for a game or two.

Y'know, I can't stand how all criticism gets reduced to 'hating'. I never hated Eller, but I did doubt him. Flashes of potential aren't the same thing as actual production. I was concerned that even with all his skills, Lars wouldn't develop the confidence and aggressiveness to use them regularly. Luckily, Eller seems to have taken that next step and gained control over his game. He's been a pleasant surprise.

Our only center who can still be effective when the physicality gets taken up a notch. He needed to impose his frame to find his game and he's doing just that.

I agree with you but just to nitpick (even further), it would have been amazing 2 years ago when he was playing with AK. Now I think it has become more of a reality and then some.

Staal has 17 points in 23 games this year, 50 in 62 last year, so we know he can give 65 points per 82 games as a 2nd line center.

His Corsi real qoc is 1.104, 1.461 last year. Offensive zone starts at around 48%. PDO is below 1.000 both years yet he is +8 during that time span.

He also gives over 2 minutes a game on the PK, and scores a lot of shorthahanded goals.

If Eller becomes Staal, plan the parade.

Dayum, didn't have to go all advanced stats on me! Let's see by season's end if it gets closer, Eller is red hot.
