It IS a lower salary. 9.4M a year vs. 8.25M a year, just no fake years to lower cap hit. The CBA just makes it so salary matches up more accurately with cap hit.

Parise's salary isn't 7.5M like his cap hit. It's 9.4M with a few fake years at the end to lower his cap hit to 7.5M. Same with all of the other contracts.. Most of them average around 9M in 'real' salary.

Getzlaf took an 8M paycut relative to what his peers got paid under the last CBA. Not to mention, he only gets 8 year of job security vs. 13.

This is has nothing to do with the player or the team, this is the new CBA in action. No more can salaries not match up with cap hit. Getzlaf's salary is LOWER compared to his peers contracts... if Parise signs his contract now, his cap hit is probably a tad over 9M.

Nope. They got locked out to reduce TOTAL percentage of player compensation, not individual percentages. They also were locked out to make sure that the cap hit for salary matched the actual salary and didn't have fake years tacked on so that teams couldn't hoard star players at artificially reduced hits. The Blackhawks better use their 2 year window because its their turn next.

I really expected a discount so I am a little disappointed.

My guess was ~$6.8M, give or take $.2M. Thought a lot of Ducks fans were crazy when they said it was going to be under $6M. Would've thought it just as crazy if someone guessed $8.25M. Either way, Getzlaf got what he wanted, the Ducks gave him what they were willing to and the fans seem happy enough.

"The guy had 12 goals last year." He isn't a goal scorer... you clearly don't watch him play. He had 91 points in 2009 and he is in that form. People have short memories.

Interesting signing, that is July 1st crazy money. A bit too much imo.

Good luck to him and hope he has continued success except against the Leafs.

The cap space that a player is taking up against the league cap is what matters. Crosby makes $8.7 million AAV. Sorry, Getzlaf, you missed the boat... If Crosby is making $8.7 then what does that put Getzlaf at? $6.5 - 7.0 million range?
People keep referring to what the players are making, and then immediately using the wrong numbers. A cap hit is not what the player is making. It's really getting ridiculous how people keep referring to it in reference to what a player makes, or deserves to make.

As a fan, I'm sure some of you think the cap hit is the bottom line. What about the players? Some of you seem to be expecting these players to take massive pay cuts, based on how you feel about their salary cap hit. Do you think those players agree?

Good luck trying to get Perry to sign for any less than 8.5 now.

To paraphrase what you wrote, I can't stop laughing at all the people comparing this contract with ones signed under the previous CBA.

Bad apples vs. great oranges...

Seriously, do you think in 4 years he is going to be considered elite anymore? He is not the fastest player and the game will only get faster.....in 4-5 years this is going to be a terrible contract.

Not too mention the fact that the guy seems to play when he wants. He is one season removed from an amazing 11 goal 57 point campaign......but surprise contract year he is over a PPG for 22 games and he gets paid......GM's will never learn.

He should have came in around $6 to $6.25.......cannot wait to see his effort level next few seasons not to mention in year 6, 7 and 8 of this deal.....

So to sum up......I dont like Getzlaf and now I think he is incredibly overpaid!
you must not have seen what else he brings to the table, dominatin your fav playa since '06!

Jeeez, that's a big cap number. I can see why the rumblings were out there about not being able to keep both guys now.

8 years is far too long! Though ANA needs to give this type of deal to keep their players.

I think we disagree. I think players should/are/will be paid based on what the cap allows them to be paid. The current cap doesn't allow players to earn $10 million+ per season.
Was the 20% rule abolished?

Not any particular player's salary, but the total salaries paid to the players. From 57% of the pie to 50%.

Each club is free to use that 50% as they deem fit.

a little much when you consider Crosby 8.7, malkins is 8.7, Kopitar 6.8, Thornton 7, marleau 6.9, M. Richards 5.750, Carter 5.0, H. Sedin 6.1, Datsyuk 6.7....

i'd say hes around the 6-7 mill worth so its not horrible but to be honest i would say 4 years would have made it soo much worse... i hate long term deals (DiPeitro, Gomez, Savard, Pronger, Redden.. off the top of my head) but we will see

Crazy contract. Had to lock him up though. Good on Getzlaf.

I'm really baffled. Just a brutal contract all around. Imagine the discount the Ducks could have gotten if they extended him last year when he had a down year.

Is he worth it? No, I just don't see it. I could easily see this contract crippling the Ducks in the future.

My guess is overpaying him is what was necessary to get him to stay. Ultimately, though, the Ducks and teams of a similar value are better off overpaying Getzlaf and not being a likely cup contender than not having Getzlaf and not being relevant/in the playoffs..

Crazy... Getzlaf is a great player but he's definitely overpaid now.
