I should probably preface this by saying I'm not a big fan of Kessel's, so yes I would do this deal.

Nino is a young power forward prospect that can play in your top 6 or bottom 6. Lupul can shift to the first line right wing with JVR. The Islanders pick might be high enough to take a guy like Monahan or Lindholm or trade up for them, and they could form an awesome center tandem with Kadri for the future.

I stand corrected. Quickie stats checks are obviously not a strong point of mine. I'm surprised to find that Carter has scored that many, actually.

They simply cannot have made the trade they made, and then lose him for nothing. That would be completely irrevocably unacceptable to the fanbase.

Dreger, whose inside information I actually trust, especially with the Leafs since he's Nonis' cousin, has come out and said something along the lines of (paraphrased) "Leafs management isn't fooled by their current position in the standings. They know there are several key holes on the roster that need to be filled, that teams are calling about Kessel, and that Nonis is listening, even if he's not actively shopping him". There are also the rumours that Nonis initially was strongly against the trade to acquire him, and didn't think he was a guy to build around.

Now do I think he'll be traded this season? Probably not. But I don't think it's off the table either. IMO Nonis is willing to move him, just has to see the right deal. And that doesn't mean the equivalent of what the Leafs gave up, because that's obviously not going to happen.
Thank Goodness they're sane!

The worst thing is, this is no where near our best offer. It's just what Phil realistically costs.

This is the thing. Half of leaf fans can't stand him now. If he signs for this type of money and continues to play the same he will continue infuriate 50% of the fans.

I wouldnt mind him staying for the RIGHT price that is. Nonis and his agent should begin talking about his upcoming contract like others have suggested in this thread. The sweet spot for kessel is under 7 mil, and i believe he hasnt built himself a reputation to warrant more than that. His PPG last season was impressive, however it is questionable if he can maintain that pace going forward. Im almost positive many Leafs fans would gladly pay him 7+ if his skills demonstrated he was worth that amount, however he is a very predictable offensive player with limited tricks. I will hand it to him that he definitely has the snapshot downpat and play-making abilities, but when i look at guys like Stamkos, he has far greater offensive skills and utilize many different shots to score goals. Bringing forward my last argument, Kessel simply plays a soft game, and can easily turn into a ghost if someone on the opposition scares him. As stated in many posts, you pay guys the big bucks that can step up their game to another level when the going gets tough and still win you games. Kessel simply cannot do that, and is pretty limited in that sense. He just does not deserve a contract worthy of that upper echeleon tier of players. I will say this though however, as much as I dislike Kessel earning that much money, I can definitely see it happening either from Nonis or in free agency.

It wouldn`t surprise me if Nonis looked at offers this summer. He`s clearly not going to fit into the hardworking identity the Leafs are supposedly trying to establish. it must drive Randy crazy watching him mail it in when the opportunity to create offense isn`t there. You can`t have Kessel`s if you want the hard team to play against identity. Its that simple.

He's a complimentary player and thats it, he needs better linemates to thrive. Players like that do not deserve the highest paid contracts in the league. If I'm Nonis right now, I am listening to offers for Kessel and should one come up that is too good to pass, I send Kessel with his bags packed to the airport.

Agreed.
As much as his lacklustre play irritates the heck out of me i will miss his substantial offensive ability. But its a tradeoff i`ll make everytime. A different winger that can score 10g 10 assists less per year but help prevent a similar amount of GA and add other intangibles is a step forward. I`ve always hated Kessels effort even before Burkes blunder but its far less painful to witness when he`s mailing it in for the opponent.

I won`t comment in this thread anymore as i have nothing to offer thats on topic.

I can understand why the Leafs wouldn't want to trade Kessel for three lesser players of course, especially with Clowe's recent struggles, but value wise this is pretty close.

Some Leaf fans need to calm down about Kessel sometimes. I'm not a fan of him at all, but he's still a talented player and someone the Leafs could use if they make the playoffs this year.

Why would we trade Kessel? Look what kind of players he's turned JVR and Lupul in. You don't see either of those two making the kind of plays Phil does.

Get a responsible centre in between Kessel and whoever and you have you're first line. Leaf fans are idiots sometimes jesus.
