Ryan Smyth: The most useless player on the team

Can anyone tell me what this guy does or why he's still here?

He's slow, he can't score, he's not physical, and if the last few games are any indication he has even less leadership than Horcoff.

Like many Oiler fans I was happy he decided to come back and take Colin Fraser away from us at the same time...

Now it appears we made a huge mistake by letting him go and getting Smyth back. There doesn't seem to be a more useless player on the Oilers or even in the NHL.

Just waive him. He serves no purpose and is dragging the team down to horrible depths.

Compliance buy out by our next GM. Then retirement.

Along with Belanger.

Sad sack.

Clearing these guys means we keep Horcoff.

I still remember when everyone was freaking out that he might go to Calgary.

Ah, what could have been.

Dammit why did you have to drive that dagger into my heart? Just imagine... People would have called Tambo an idiot for letting him go there...

He is one of many. In reality we should not even have to bad mouth him. We should have enough NHL players so he has a small role.

My name is Ryan Whitney, and I ardently disagree with the title of this thread. Smytty is the second most useless player on this team.

Yeah, Ryan Smyth is the problem on this pathetic team..A 4th line player makes the whole difference..

That's what you picked out of this game? Give it a ------- rest..

It was a great signing by the management, wouldn't you agree? Thank God we have him for another year!

He's supposed to be a leader and he can't even do that. He just floats his way to his paycheque.

Don't be silly..He's on the friggin 4th line..The so-called leaders are on the top 2 lines and just aren't getting it done. Wrong mix..as the majority of people have been saying for a long time. This goes straight to poor management and, perhaps, some coaching as well.

To be honest, I still hope to see him retire an Oiler, call me sentimental. He's a 4th line winger at this point ... is he really the anchor dragging down this ship?

Smyth is my guy, please don't rag on him ... when the blame should clearly be placed on inept management.

Like I said he's not the main problem but he's done nothing to help this team since December of last year.

And yes our inept management signed him to a 2 year deal.

The Oilers have many players that would do fine if given small roles or sheltered minutes. The problem is that the entire team is like this. Maybe Hall and Smid are the only players I can think of that deserve to be on the ice at all times.

You know if he was a Flame, he would of likely been a 30 goal scorer. Isn't that the way it works?

I've been saying this for a very long time. We were right to cut ties with him when we did and it should have stayed that way. As it was there were too many sentimental fans that fooled themselves into thinking we should bring him back. His so called leadership is highly exaggerated and what he used to do isn't something you can "teach" to the younger players. Unless how to get paid more than you're worth and take numerous penalties is something we want him to pass on?

Yup, his name is not Teflon Shawn for no reason.

As far as worst player on the team, the guy that is DEAD LAST in plus minus in the league is giving smyth a real run for his money. Nick Schultz is sheer and utter garbage. Luckily no minus for him on the 1st goal, he was in the box at the time.

Buy him and Horcoff out and do what you can to get us a proper checking line center.

Smyth is actually more useless than Horcoff. I didn't think it was possible.

I won't disagree with that and that is saying a lot. Smyth just seems to have totally lost it.

Yup. The Smyth we saw at the beginning of last year was just an illusion... It's very sad but that's just the reality of it.

There are literally 2, okay maybe 3 players on the entire team who I can honestly say I hope they are able to keep for the long term, who I have optimism for in terms of ceiling, development, and their abilities to be gamechangers, legit valuable pieces moving forward.

Despite having a very, very disappointing season so far, RNH is one of those guys.

Yakupov is another. Schultz is the third.

I've lost interest in Hall almost completely. Sure, keep him for now, but it won't matter to me if they trade him. Poor hockey IQ, has shown little progression since his inception to the league. Eberle is soft, small, I like his history as a player but he's no blue chipper, and the rest of the league has figured him out. Fans of other teams mocked us about his unsustainable shooting %, his predictable slump coming back down to earth (its happening) and we sarcastically rejoiced and joined in the mock session with "unsustainable shooting %". Jokes on us. Could care less if they traded him now, honestly.

These guys are smoke and mirrors. Gagner, despite being one of the few players with great character, should've been gone yesterday.

Defensively, they have nobody who can really play the position, at least consistently. A wack of 4-5-6 guys. Schultz is the only guy with any shred of potential and hope there. Klefbom coming off major surgery, young, playing in Sweden. Years away. To me there are so many what ifs with these D prospects. No sure things. No studs. Nobody physical.

Everyone, literally everyone else can go. Theirs defense sucks. They have no blue chippers. They have no one who knows how to play defense consistently. Nobody physical or with any character.

The whole thing is a complete mess.

So you've come to admit it and accept it. About damn time, but better late than never.
