Right now it's hard to say what will happen with guys like Brad Malone and Luke Walker, but Walker's lack of progress is not encouraging. And the jury's still out on guys like Sgarbossa, Heard, Condon, Nermark, etc.
Why would Luke's play be discouraging? He's played the role of a bottom 6 forward just fine and has helped on special teams and at times in the top 6. He was not drafted expecting to be a top 6 forward so what has he done that would be discouraging? He may or may not be re-signed but he's done as asked and could find time as a support player/energy line guy in the NHL in a few years. Unfortunately the Avs have a ton of bottom 6 capable guys so Walker will probably be on the outside looking in while with the Avs. Maybe once Hejduk retires, Kobasew hits UFA, etc. we will see guys like Malone, Carey, Walker, and company get their chance. Most of their guys are 2nd year pros at most so there is no rush.

Someone in the Monsters thread was saying he's been treating the puck like a grenade of late. Honestly I haven't ever seen the kid play but given the fact that he hasn't even gotten a cup of coffee in the NHL yet makes me think his pro prospects are dimming a bit.

If we develop some great role playing forwards, great...but our track record in that department has been shaky at best.

Yeah I never saw anything I particularly liked in Walker's game in the few LE games I've watched. I think it's much more likely that we eventually see Malone and Heard up as 4th liners. Maybe a guy like Carey as a long, long shot.

With the Avs depth of similar players not to mention the upcoming influx of forwards from the past two drafts needing signed soon, Walker will probably only see a one year contract at best. His role has only just increased lately so who knows. One thing is for certain is that he's not getting the "scratched and forgotten" that players like Carman, Chouinard, etc. have dealt with before moving on to other places.

I am big fan of Walker's game, he might not have a lot of skill, but damn he has a big heart and love for the game. Gives 150% on every shift.

Also Bourke has been on a tear lately. I think he has 3-4 goals in his last 2-4 games.

Kiean Millan gave up 9 goals on 32 shots tonight. Weird that the coach didn't pull him.

Weird isn't the word I would use, I'd call it insanely idiotic.

Nermark, Meurs, Don, Beau

Probably need to decide on Condon too as he's 23 this summer. They could wait but with the influx of forwards next few summers (Smith, Heard, Bourke, etc) they will have little to no room.

Need signed by next summer:
Condon, Bourke, Smith, Blandi, Clarke, Young, Moffatt. Add that to the 4 above and Heard and that is a ton of players to decide on...a lot being forwards.

Funny how he was just nominated for league's top goalie.

Smith, Heard, Bourke, Beaupre will for sure be signed (or extended). I think Clarke/Young/Moffat/Donnely it's pretty hard to say, depends on the contract situation but could see any/all of them being let go. They'll have to decide on Condon and Blandisi

Isn't Heard already signed which is why he could play in Lake Erie then be sent back down to the Whalers?

Yup I just mean we'll re-sign him around the same time some of these other guys need to be signed. His deal was for 2 year I believe.

Just crushed that guy into the boards. Really hope that translates to the NHL.

It was a 3 year deal. Though it more seems like a 2 year deal with this year wasted.

This summer the Avs should sign these players to ELCs:

Nermark - Give him a chance to develop for a few years in the AHL. Could turn into a great defensive player if given time. IMO the SEL has stifled his development.

Beaupre - Given he will be signed. Has looked solid in the AHL/CHL games I have seen. Has a surprising amount of offensive touch to his game. Future bottom pairing guy.

Meurs - I'm not sold on his offensive output in the NHL quite yet, but he deserves a few years to see if he can continue to develop.

Condon - His last two years in college have been very good. Has finally developed a very good two way game, and is excellent on the PK. His speed and skating is NHL level now. I think he could step into the AHL and be a #2/3C right now. Could be a bottom 6 PK specialist with some offensive touch.

Aggozino - has played very well for Lake Erie, deserves a NHL contract at this point

Smith - Give him a shot in the AHL to see if his game can translate. If he struggles, send him back for an overage year.

Bourke - Just to lock him up, but he should be sent back to juniors.

Nate Schmidt - College free agent for Minn. Watch a few games of his and you will see a future top 4 TWD that can QB a PP. A huge left shot. Long time teammate of Condon might give us a leg up in signing him.

Don't disagree on the other signings and specifically think Dilon will be let go from the org. But if we're looking at UFA prospects, Lipon is probably number one on the list still and I hope we look into Alex Aleardi. Don't know anything about Schmidt admittedly.

And after saying that I just remembered he's draft eligible, not a FA, duh.

Siemens is going to take home some major hardware tonight as the Blades are announcing their 2012-13 award winners after their final regular season home game. Should be announced around 11ET tonight.

What awards is he looking at? So happy to hear that he has really got back on track. Not that it ever really seemed like he was straying from it, but just the huge decline in points, having the C taken away, rough start to the year, no Team Canada, etc. Seems like nothing but positive with him lately, which is great to hear.

I agree with Lipon. The Avs should try to sign him. Aleardi is a guy who I am not sold on. If the Avs or anybody else wants him, I expect the Aggozino treatment where the minor league team signs him for a year to see if he can cut it at that level first.

If you get a chance to watch a Minnesota game do it. Schmidt is a fantastic player. Whoever signs him is getting a legit top 4 prospect. There are few main reasons I see the Avs signing him. First, they have seen him for years and years along side Condon. He was known coming out of high school as a very talented player who was a bit lazy and out of shape, he turned that around after his first season and is now one of the hardest workers on the team. He fills an organization need on the left side of the defense with being a solid puck mover and a guy who can QB a PP from the left. Lastly, one thing the Avs really don't have anywhere in the prospect system is a guy with a bomb that can get it through, Schmidt has that.

Team is handing out 9 awards tonight I think, including mvp, rookie of the year, community minded player, top defensive forward, top defenceman, scholastic player of the year, etc.

I am all for the Avs adding talented prospects without having to give up anything. Hopefully Schmidt sees the Avs team as a good fit and he signs with us.

Not a year wasted. His first year would have dropped off because of his age whether he played in the A or CHL. One of the reasons we see college guys getting signed earlier as the later they start, the less years they can be signed. Playing as an overager/20 year old makes the contract a 2 year one no matter what with this year being his 3rd year.
