I know I've read this...but can't remember where...

Was one of the choices "Edge"? I know I've read Leopold say that he thought about the name "Edge", but because of Helen Leopold's affiliation with the SC Johnson Group which makes Edge Shave Gel...Bettman wouldn't allow it.

Sorry, not one of the answers I'm looking for

I have a hunch that PattyPred\predperson would know this one, right off.

I'm re-reading Hockey Tonk by Craig Leopold and Richard Oliver right now, but feel that this question will only be answered by someone who took part in the early festivities at the Wildhorse Saloon back when the franchise had no name and just a Sabre-toothed logo.

The information was pretty out there back then, I mean, they'd mention it on the news and all that(similar to when the Titans were coming, and they wanted to call them the 'Tri-Stars' ) and encourage people to vote for their favorite and such. It just takes having been aware\remembering.

Well...something I just learned while re-reading Hockey Tonk is that if Hampton Roads (VA) got the NHL franchise in 1998 as opposed to the Predators...they were prepared to call their team the "Rhinos". Thankfully, we have the Predators and the name "Rhinos" will hopefully never come up again for discussion in the NHL.

I got it...knew I read it somewhere...

Ice Tigers, Tigers, Sabre Cats were also choices.

Also names thrown out for discussion internally were Fury, Attack, Power, and Rage among others...they (thankfully) never made it to the main stream.

New Question:

During the expansion process in 1997, the NHL Board of Governors Expansion Committee visited the six cities in contention for expansion franchises to gauge the community's commitment to hockey, meet local dignitaries, and evaluate the arenas or review plans for building facilities.

Two part question:

1) Along with Nashville, what were the other six cities visited?

2) Nashville was the 4th city visited on the trip, what order were the cities visited (interesting to see the pattern of success when the order is revealed)?

Whereas I would guess Nashville, Atlanta, Cbus, Minnesota, Oklahoma City, Houston---the significance being the order the franchises were eventually awarded. Conspiracy theorists would say Okie City and Houston are next

OK, I'll reveal the order...(Trigg, they only visited six cities...not eight)

St. Paul, MN
Columbus, OH
Atlanta, GA
Nashville, TN
Houston, TX
Oklahoma City, OK

Notice that only the first four cities visited received franchises. In the book Hockey Tonk it talks briefly about conversations on the bus from the GEC (or Nashville Arena as it was then called) to the airport and how several of the governors didn't even want to continue the trip. Alas, only the first four cities get franchises and the last two are snubbed???

On another note, what is mentioned throughout the book is the fact that the hockey fans in town really got Leopold excited about the possibility of getting an NHL franchise and how overwhelmed the Board of Governors were when they were greeted by 3,000 hockey fans in jerseys from all over the world and the NHL as they were leaving the GEC to board the bus to the airport. I just want to say since I wasn't there a big thank you to everyone that did take the time to show up that day. Without you guys, I wouldn't be enjoying hockey here in Nashville today.

All right...someone post a new question...this is fun!

I helped out with the "Stick-it in Nashville" stuff, along with some people from Sue Atkinson's PR firm, we had a good time, but it poured down rain that morning and we all got soaked.

Hey, but it was all worth it in the end, right?
