So i was watching at the 1997 draft results....

The 1997 draft was one of the best draft in the last 10 years...There was a large pool of quality player like Joe Thornton , Sergei Samsonov, Luongo, Olli Johkinen , Eric Brewer....

and look which player took Rejean Houle....Jason Ward!!!!

and you know which player the Ottawa Senators took right after us??? Marian Hossa!!!

i hate you Rejean!!

It was a great year for busts, anyway. And with Ward rated as a top-10 pick, he was a natural fit. I'd take him over Ference, Cleary, Riesen, Dome, Zultek, Jones, Holmqvist, Cherneski, or Brown, who were the next players taken after Hossa. It's kind of stunning, but when you think about it, Jason Ward still rates in the top half of the 1997 1st round, even in hindsight!

Though picking Ribeiro, Beauchemin, Markov, and Ryder doesn't make it a bad draft....would you imagine adding Gagné to that list, that would've been the best draft ever.....close second to the 1984 draft with Svoboda, Corson, Richer and Roy.

This is actually the only fair criticism in this thread so far, IMO.

The ones that are really pissing me off is Gagne and Bergeron. Here we are saying we should offer then a contract when we all know they should be in our lineup

I remember that draft. Hossa had a bad knee (I think) injury in junior and that scared a lot of people off. Of course it would have been great to of drafted him but we weren't the only team to pass on him.

Hindsight is 20/20 they say. I remember Ward being a consensus top 10 pick. Funny how many other teams passed on Hossa too.

Houle and CO, cause I truly believe his scouts had more to say than him, did mix up height and grit with desire to perform.....and then Timmins made the same mistake with Urquhart (but don't worry, I'm not blaming them for not taking Bergeron, I didn't even know him that much at the time....)

Cheechoo is good. He was a thirty goal guy without Thornton. Yes he never would've won the richard trophy without Joe, but he is no slouch either.

*sighs* Well the Draft is a crapshoot. It's neat to wonder what could have been...

At the time though, I don't really blame Houle... Jason Ward was an extremely attractive prospect coming out of junior... unfortunately he didn't really pan out.

He suffered that injury AFTER he was drafted.

It wouldn't be a close 2nd but a far behind second. Patrick Roy! Richer, Corson and Svoboda are all better than every one of the 4 Habs drafted. Adding Gagne doesn't make it any closer.

Amen, loadie. Ward, Chouinard, and all of the guys that were picked and became 'busts' were ALL highly rated prospects.

The only really dumb first-round pick that I can recall was José Charbonneau in 1985 . The Canadiens picked him before the Nordiques could have because he was the best rated Québécois player in the draft that year. It was a pick based upon public relations considerations. There were derisive laughs in the draft room when the pick took place . In an alternate universe, I don't know who they would have picked but that pick was a flat-out BUST!

If it's any consolation, the Nordiques pick, Dave Latta, ended up playing 35 games and picking up 12 points along the way. Also, in that draft, the Canadiens picked up Tom Chorske, Brent Gilchrist, Donald Dufresne who all played multi-years for the Canadiens - not major impact players but contributors nevertheless.

They missed out on a whole lot of better players but that happens to all teams anyway. Even worse, LA, that year, picked Craig Duncanson & Dan Gratton with picks 9 & 10........................ Ever heard of them?

That was the most painful Habs draft moment I can recall. I remember reading an article on the RDS website the day before that draft, which mentioned the scouts were leaning towards picking Gagne. Houle obviously intervened to overrule his scouts, due to what must have been some heavy lobbying by Eric's coach/father Guy Chouinard.

From CNN Sport illustrated back then:

"The Montreal Canadiens used the 11th pick in today's NHL draft to select center-right wing Jason Ward.

Canadiens general manager Rejean Houle was surprised Ward was available at number 11, considering he was ranked fourth at the end of the season by NHL Central Scouting."
