Devils/Coyotes/Sabres Trade Proposal

Devils get:

David LeNeveu ($585K)
Coyotes 1st round pick in 2007
Jochen Hecht ($2.35M)
summary: Trade Gomez for their Goalie of the Future to replace Brodeur; valuable 1st round pick; center replacement for Gomez; $2M in cap relief

Coyotes get:
Martin Biron (definite #1 goalie if not this year than next year)
Scott Gomez (perfect fit for Coyotes)
summary: Trade Comrie, Sjostrom, LeNeveu, & 2007#1 for definite #1 goalie if not this year then next; #1 center they need; add $2.75M to their Cap

Sabres get:
Mike Comrie (assuming an arbitration award of $3M)
Sjostrom ($750K)
summary: Trade Biron & Hecht in order to get rid of $4.5M in salary ($2.1M which is for their backup goalie); Comrie replaces Briere if they choose to deal him for a nice package & save $2M in cap space; and/or Sjostrom replaces Max or Dumont if they choose to deal either one while saving a considerable amount of payroll.

Sounds possible. But the Sabres seem to be taking it on the chin in that one.

They gain: Mike Comrie (gag) and Sjostrom
They lose: Biron and Hecht

Personally, I wouldn't trade either Biron or Hecht straight up for Comrie!

no thanks from Buffalo

Hecht is locked in for two more years at a reasonable salary. doesn't address any of Buffalo's needs.

No thanks from the Sabres. We have an abundance of centers so even if we lose Briere we don't really need Comrie.

I would LOVE Hecht in a Devils uniform. He would fit their style perfectly.

But we don't want LeNeveau. We already have Frank Doyle signed for less.

Ok. But LeNeveu is 10x the goalie Doyle is. You're comparing apples to oranges there, I'm afraid.

is it 2 more years @ 2.35? I was trying to address the need to shed payroll....which it does allow you to do.....either by taking Sjostrom in place of Max or Dumonts contract, or the Briere trade for ??

Seems to me that payroll is a huge issue with the Sabres.

note: with this proposal you are losing Hecht as well....

It's all irrelevant anyway...Brodeur is still signed for another 5 years and I doubt he plans on being anyone's backup during that time. The Devils have absolutely no need to trade for a "Goalie of the Future" at this point in time with Brodeur showing no signs of slowing down (despite his struggles last year, he was still nominated for the Vezina). For the time being a cheap, capable backup is all they need.

Hecht only plays center when multiple other centers are hurt. Sabres can lose Hecht and Briere and still be fine at center.

That's beside the point though, as Hecht's salary shouldn't be one they're looking to shift. I doubt they have any interest in trading him unless they were offered a deal that was too good to refuse.

Hecht contract is reasonable. the Sabres don't need to move him. they will almost certainly need to move Afinogenov and/or Dumont if they keep Briere. Hecht isn't likely to be traded IMO.

I would expect that Stafford and Pominville would be expected to fill certain holes, correct?

Pominville certainly, Stafford could make the team. But i expect him to need a little more seasoning. If he can't crack the top 9 he'll be in rochester and he'd be numero uno on the injury call up list.

I'll turn that down from a Phoenix perspective, too.

The Devils make out like bandits here. Although ideally LeNevue would but substituted for an asset the Devils can actually use.
