I thought the new CBA was supposed to encourage teams to sign players for lower salaries? I guess that whole *****fit the teams threw about the players getting too much money was a load of *********. All that whining and literally zero change.

The cap hit would be less if they could slap on the "retirement" years at the end...but the new CBA prevents that circumvention. That's why it looks like that.

If this was last year, instead of being 8 years 66 million it would be 12 years 70 million...and then we'd be saying things like "bargain" because of the 4 1M years at the end.

I do think it's a little high for Getzlaf, BUT the Ducks aren't gonna spend to the cap anyways so that's not really an issue and they can't afford a Briere/Drury situation with their top 2 players. We know how that plays out...they needed to keep one of them and clearly they prioritized Getzlaf more. It's worth a premium.

Had they done the extension before the lockout, they could have tacked on the extra years and brought the cap hit down, but the real money for the next 8 years isn't going to change so it wouldn't really have made a difference.

Teams are still going to pay a premium for premier talents. It's the depth guys that are gonna get signed for less to compensate.

Matt Duchene lighting up the Hawks.

Also of note, PA Parenteau, the "Ville Leino of 2012" according to HF, is up to 22 points in 23 games.
Only three points off of Leino's total in 71 games last year.

Well, Winnipeg vs Florida results in a 3 point game so that is great for us, and it also looks like the Avs are going to end the Hawks streak.

On the downside, the Oilers got shutout again. They are definitely in the discussion for a top 3 draft candidate again and will be a team we are competing against for basement.

C-Bus has won 3 games in a row and if they beat Detroit tomorrow, we'd go into Sunday's game ranked 29th in the league based on win %

Hopefully Calgary can pull out a win tonight but they are playing the Ducks so it is unlikely, however I'm not that worried about Calgary

With every passing week, I'm getting more and more excited about the upcoming draft.

Giving proven stars big money isn't a problem to me, you lock up players like Getzlaf because they are a rare breed. The long-term deals I have problems with are the ones being handed out to unproven players, example for us would be Ville Leino or guys that just had one really good year but has a lot of ?'s like Lupul. You could look at Myers as well, but that was a different situation since there was a chance that Myers was going to be a franchise defenseman and that deal could actually end up looking like good market value. It was a risk, but it's one that I don't mind taking. Same thing could be said about signing any young unproven player to long-term mega deals (Hall, Eberle, etc) those are all risky deals, but they are ones that could end up paying off.

C-Bus wins their 4th in a row and now the Sabres are 29th in the league, only in front of Florida.

With a Sabres loss tomorrow and a Panthers win, we would be on pace to pick 1st overall with 22 games remaining.

It's a shame that this is a shortened season, because I'd love to see how many points Crosby would put up this year. I believe 25 years old is when a lot of players have their best offensive seasons. He's on pace for 130 right now over 82 games. It's too bad he's had injury problems the past few years, would love looking at his stats and seeing 100+ points every season.

Doesn't happen instantly, I'm sure Tampa will be fine for many years to come with a franchise centerman and a potential franchise defenseman locked up in their organization. They need to fix some other things, but they have the most important and most difficult pieces to acquire..we don't.

DarrenDreger A $70.2 mil salary cap was predictably going to impact players. A 20% escrow still seems very high.

This is after a report claiming they were going to generate 72.7% of last season's revenue in 58.5% of the time..

It's too bad, as he was a good fit for that defense going in. Chicago's obviously just fine without him but it's a shame for him.

I had a good laugh all offseason with people listing him #3 or even out of the top 5 on player/fantasy power ranking lists. Please. He's so clearly the best offensive player in the league and though I used to argue that Datsyuk may be better overall, I don't feel that's the case anymore.

The thing is he clearly took a big jump scoring-wise in '10-'11 before the injury as he put up 1.61 PPG. In another abbreviated season last year he bettered that number slightly and right now he's at a slightly better pace. Though we're talking about barely over a full season's worth of games over the past 3 seasons, it's undoubtedly for real. This is his new baseline and he's that good.

That earth lurching must've been the bandwagon hitting a tree. Kid's still got lots of talent but hey, youth... it takes time to become not youth.

Apparently one of the teams is Edmonton. As a Canucks fan, I hope not.
