Leafs Roster analysis - Defense - Dion Phaneuf

I will be going through our roster and injured players and we will determine the players role... i.e Kessel (Elite winger) vs (1A winger) vs (1B winger) vs (2A winger)

This is not determining their role for the team, but what they're capable of on a playoff team. I'll only be putting what in my mind are "realistic" options.

Term definitions:

Elite: Top 5 in their position
1A: 1st line/1st pairing/#1 Goalie
1B: Able to fill in 1st line/1st pairing/Average Starter
2A: 2nd line/2nd pairing/Back-up
2B: Able to fill in 2nd line/2nd pairing/Too good for AHL Starter but not proven
3A: 3rd line/3rd pairing
3B Able to fill in 3rd line/3rd pairing
4A 4th line
4B: Able to fill in 4th line
Scratch: 13th player/7th dman
AHL player: Self explanatory

I'll be starting from the net out.

Goaltending

James Reimer 1B
Ben Scrivens 2A

Defense

Cody Franson 2B
Mark Fraser 3A
Jake Gardiner 1B
Carl Gunnarsson 2B
Korbinian Holzer 3A
Mike Komisarek 3B
Michael Kostka 3B
John-Michael Liles 2B
Dion Phaneuf

Forwards

Tyler Bozak
Matt Frattin
Mikhail Grabovski
Nazem Kadri
Phil Kessel
Leo Komarov
Nikolai Kulemin
Joffrey Lupul
Clarke MacArthur
Jay Mcclement
Frazer McLaren
Colton Orr
David Steckel
James Van Riemsdyk

Keep me aware of errors please.

over 28mins last night 1-on-1 vs. Crosby. 3A and an even rating.

Pretty damn good.

1st pairing no doubt.

He's capable of playing elite but doesn't do it with any consistency

Hard to say he's top 5 at his position

Elite. One of few defenseman that can be top 10 in scoring, while playing a a strong defensive and physical game.

Not arguing, but who do you view as top 5?

I posted some pretty negative posts about him this season because he was trying to carry the team, and trying to do everything. He was all over the place earlier. Recently he is smart/tough/sound,and i couldn't be happier with him the way he has refined his game.

Last night all he wanted to do was contain Crosby, and got 3 points in the process. This is the best defense he has ever played in his career right now.Just hoping he keeps it simple/smart the rest of the way.

We as fans should expect this level from him every game. If he does bring it, he would be an elite D no question. But since his previous game was putrid, am not very optimistic he will develop the necessary consistency.

Huh? Crosby was dominant last night...Phaneuf did alright but had it not been for a couple of bad bounces Crosby would have had a 3 or 4 point night, IMO. LOL that he didnt get a star either..I think MacLean made a joke about it after the game..Crosby was the best player on the ice all night long. No surprise..though..he is the best player in hockey. His shot in the shootout was absolutely unfair. Sick.

Weber
Chara
Karlsson
Letang
Pietrangelo

Off the top of my head.

I think Phaneuf is a 1B defenceman. 1st pairing guy but plays next to the better defenceman.

See I'd say he's a 1A defenceman. 1st pairing guy but is an average best Dman on a team.

How has weber played without Suter?

You have to consider that Phaneuf has been playing with AHL defenseman mostly since he has been in Toronto.

Get suter(or an actual top 2 defenseman) to play with Phaneuf, and I have no problem believing he can be top 5 in the league

You get Phaneuf a decent defensive d man of NHL calibre. (Some one like Scuderi), Phaneuf looks a whole lot better and we have a legitimate shut down pairing.

Are you saying this as in he's been poor this year? Or legit asking? I haven't been keeping an eye on him to say, but from his stats he looks like he is on pace for his usual.

I'm a fan of Phaneuf, but I don't think he is a go-to guy on a Stanley cup defence.

Nobody can eliminate Crosby, but containing him is hard enough.Crosby was not even dominating last night actually lol. He was 14wins/15losses on the face-offs,and is usually better than that.

Evaluating a player in a snapshot of a single game is not the way i do it.He has had a decent first half after a pretty bad start.

If the talent was spread equally, he'd be an average number 1 d-man, placing him at around top 15, even if I am not a huge fan of that metric. Phaneuf is easily a 1A. Cannot wait for the forwards. Great idea for a series of threads

This is a bit ridiculous. This has been discussed to death.

Phaneuf is in the 30-35 range in best D in the league. He's one of the best 1B in the league.

Well this thread says he is a minimum 1a this year, and i believe it is intended to be viewed on the team not league. I assumed that anyways.

Yeah,it says "Leafs roster"

He is playing high level hockey(elite) this year, playing against top guys and putting up points while he is at it. How many points does Chara or Weber have? How often have you pulled at your hair because Dion? I watch him like a hawk because I was one to complain about him previous years...i think he is doing all you could want from a top D this year.

Please name 30-35 defenseman better than Dion Phaneuf.

The guy plays some of the toughest competition in the league with unstable partners every year.

Phaneuf is a top 15 defensmen in this league.

It just shows you how deceiving the +/- stat is...

Crosby was shadowed by Phaneuf last night and all he got was one easy empty net goal. That's it.
