I'm not saying it's probable, but they play well against Montreal and Pittsburgh. With a hot Nabakov and a healthy team, anything can happen once you're in the playoffs.

If one of the choices was First Overall and Cappy gone...I'd take that but it's a pipe dream.
If you dump all the UFA's, then it will sink to the bottom. However, that's usually around the time Bailey and Okposo turn into Gretzky and Kurri to bring hope that at some point in their NHL lives they will learn to man up and produce the entire season.

People the Isles have the THIRD worst GA in the league. Yes, that's 27/30 - is that indicative of a playoff team? No.

Hate to say it but that's true. The next 3 weeks will determine a lot.

I'm staying optimistic that JT helps turn the culture.

Throw out the flyer embarrassment and the backup goalie's games and Nabakov can be an above avg playoff goalie. A top PP and strong offense and a D that is improving lately...

yes, my glasses are rosy.

The defense is able, they are improving and the overall team game is starting to improve but the facts are too little experience, too little in leadership and no toughness aside from those Moulson says should do all the tough stuff in his pregame interview a few games back.

The way the TEAM plays is why we are so bad on goals against.

If you have Aucoin, Hickey, Reasoner, Okposo and Carkner out there, we can shut down any line if we had the team playing tougher, smarter and better. But we don't. No team toughness save for a few sightings {just a few more than UFO sightings in that span}. No pushing opponents out of Nabby's crease. No hitting those who rush the crease. Passing is not done smartly. Clears are GOD AWFUL. MacDonald is allergic to his stick this year. Hamonic is making stupid decisions. Moulson looks like a solid backchecker one shift then like a talentless Mario Lemieux avoiding all defense the next. Martin has done it all but is stuck on line 4 instead of promoted to the top two lines where he belongs. Nielson has ****all to pass to. Okposo makes Tomas Pock look like a HHOFer.

Many more.....

But we have no reason to make trades....and our coach is safely employed.

Just want to point out - the last three drafts we've chosen 4th or 5th. Why? Because we've opted to win a stretch meaningless games at the end of the season (when we were already out of the playoff race) and bump out draft spot down from what essentially could be 1 or 2 down to 4/5. Miss out on Hall/Seguin, Huberdeau/Larsson, Murray that way. Players that are higher end in upside and talent than what we've chosen.

This all being said; tank for Seth Jones/MacKinnon. A damn near sure shot at center (MacKinnon) to pair with Tavares for at least 6 years or the best defenseman prospect in years (Jones) will go a long way to helping us as opposed to us finishing 10th in the east, missing the playoffs and losing out on a four horse draft of MacKinnon, Jones, Drouin, Barkov.

I would love to see a playoff appearance. Call me crazy but I can still see cappy getting canned. First reason: what if we don't show up in the playoffs? 2nd reason: There have been coaches who have been fired after a playoff appearance- it happens its PRO Sports and a business. Not to mention it is a shortened season. IF snow is thinking long term, maybe he has been turned off of the inconsistent play over the past year or 2.

Make the playoffs. Seeing how your team reacts under playoff pressure is a growing experience and could help in the development of a young player.

Not sure why some are saying the rebuild stalled. If isles make the playoffs this year, it will be without many of the blue chip prospects currently projected to be on the team in a couple of years. That's what's exciting if the isles make the playoffs this year. Basically its because they would do it without all the talent still developing in their system. Making the playoffs this year would be indicative of how scary this team is going to be in the not to distant future.

The Playoffs is how to seperare the men from the boys, I can care less about draft picks. I want to win.. time to see if Okposo/Bailey and the rest have what it takes to win. If they collapse again this year then I dont know how many times I can spell it out for you people that they suck.

The playoffs are a huge indicator that maybe we are moving in the right direction. Hopefully this also convinces Wang to spend $$

This should not be debatable. Any fan should want their team into the playoffs, regardless of the ultimate fate.

Most importantly, Even if you thought that more would be gained by getting yet another 1st round draft pick, I would have to strongly disagree. If you finish in last place, the worst team, how the hell is one more draft pick going to make that team a playoff team?

Much more will be gained from a team making the playoffs. The team will proove that they have turned the corner, that they are no longer a shadow of greater teams but that they are ready to compete. The general manager and owner (hopefully) would be more willing to spend and bring in some top tier talent. Freegents would not cringe at the name of this team. More confidence and excitement for teams and fans. Experience for a team whose majority of the players have never even come close to the playoffs.

I don't know how any fan can want to tank for another 1st round draft pick. To me, making the playoffs is a win, win situation, no matter how you look at it.

As appetizing as Seth Jones is, I think the Islanders have re-stocked the prospect cupboard well enough to stop the draft lottery train. Even on D, with Reinhart, Pelech, and Pokka look good enough to make an impact in the NHL.

I think it's also very important for Tavares and the other vets to see the team taking the next step.

If the Islanders make the playoffs at 7 or 8, they won't make the second round, but it's a key step this team needs to take. It also makes a statement to free agents as there will most likely be two teams in the Atlantic below the Islanders.

This thread is very educational. It explains how the isles get 12 thousand fans night after night despite comming in last place 12 of the last 15 years or so. The bottom line is, MANY fans don't mind losing, many actually Embrace Failure.!!

(1)Enough with the shiny trophies we have been collecting for losing, I want a shiny trophy we collect for winning.

(2)Who is saying that Capuano will get credit for them making the playoffs? Wouldn't that go to JT, Nabby, Streit and the rest of the team?

If Drouin, Barkov, and Lindholm are in play then I say tank.

No interest in jones or Nate.

If the NYI tank and are guarantee #1 which ofcourse is impossible to predict and most likely not going to happen then I say do it.

My reason is because the draft is so deep and full of top talent.

A top 5 pick this year can give you several all star players.

But starting in 2014 the NYI need to go all out.

I mean the true end of the rebuild/tanking.

Sign a guy like Semin, bring in Strome and Nino, and retain all our free agents.

No embracing failure. Its as simple as this:
If the NYI didnt have the first overall then they wouldnt have been able to draft JT>

I guess 28% of you people prefer the draft party at the Coliseum over playoff games.

I hate failure but I voted non playoffs for the simple fact that Wang wont spend any money so with this current roster or anything close we are all pretty sure that this will be a team that MAYBE makes the 8th seed on a yearly basis. Wang is my key reason on the way i voted. Would i rather have a #1 prospect in the world or a Reasoner,Sim, or Hilbert (just to name a few) type of a player as this years "Big" off season singing?

This is a typical long-term vs. short-term argument. Not only is #1 more valuable than losing in the first, it is more valuable than making the Finals, but not winning thw Cup.

Not only is #1 more validate than 6 playoff games, even #5 is.

The Islanders should trade everyone over 27 years of age for picks and hope to get a top 3-5 draft pick.
