This is exactly what I was going to say. I hate that I have to watch the teams I hated seeing Chicago play (for entertainment's sake) on a regular basis. I can't take more Minnesota games. The only entertaining games Chicago will have are with Winnipeg, and that's just because they'll be drudgings.

Kinda undecided.

We will finally have some competition in our divison. and I actually like our division in terms of the teams involved and the travel (Way more improved that will be a huge benefit to us)

But at the same point from a league perspective, the divison choices in the East are really sketchy and I don't like having unbalanced confrences.

I think they should have made a short term change (Move WPG to the west, then one of CBJ/DET to the east) Until we are ready for expansion and the move of PHX.

Although you have to think, there will be expansion to 32 teams now sometime in the coming years. We can't keep it like this forever.

Yeah, I like it generally. Obviously it's not fair to all teams but we can't have one. Better than the previous imo.

Western teams have a 57% chance of making the playoffs, Eastern teams a 50% chance.

How are the owners ok with that, when the playoffs are by far the most lucrative time of year?

As a Leafs fan it is really cool to have the Red Wings back though.

You DO realize that it wasnt too long ago when fans would say the same thing about your Blackhawks, right? They were absolutely PUTRID to watch.

These things are cyclical.

I like it. More balanced in terms of travel, and I get to see teams like the Kings, Sharks, and Ducks more often while not sacrificing games against the Canucks and Oilers.

I love it. No more waiting for a divisional game to start at 9:30PM on a weeknight.

No. The only positive is playing Detroit. Lose games against Philly and Pittsburgh, don't care for playing the Florida teams that much. Home and away with the Western teams I'm not totally against though.

Detroit fans and team have been asking to be in the east for years. You got your wish.

colorado and dallas (actually, winnipeg is further west than dallas, but dallas is closer to the ocean), the next closest teams, are even farther

As an Oilers fan no.

We aren't that good to begin with, and we enter a division with some very tough teams.

Not to mention late start times. Yay.

Here are the teams in the Eastern Time Zone:

Detroit
Columbus
Buffalo
New York
Long Island
New Jersey
Raleigh
Washington D.C
Miami
Tampa Bay
Philadelphia
Pittsburgh
Toronto
Ottawa
Boston
Montreal

If you are going to have Western and Eastern teams, then you're going to have more teams in the Eastern Time Zones. Tough. The 'Western' teams have THREE time zones to deal with. And unless you want to relocate some teams like New Jersey and New York out to the Midwest, then the East/West balance is going to be skewed toward the Eastern Time zone.

What would have been fun is to simply break up the Western/Eastern, divided into a time zone and then just pick teams from east and west and combine them into a division.

Pacific:
Vancouver
San Jose
Phoenix
Anaheim
Los Angeles

Mountain:
Calgary
Edmonton
Colorado

Central:
Minnesota
Winnipeg
St. Louis
Dallas
Chicago
Nashville

Eastern:
Detroit
Columbus
Buffalo
New York
Long Island
New Jersey
Raleigh
Washington D.C
Miami
Tampa Bay
Philadelphia
Pittsburgh
Toronto
Ottawa
Boston
Montreal

So:

Vancouver
Detroit
Calgary
New Jersey
Dallas

Is the new division!

horrible. some teams end up traveling half the country while the others don't. divisions being uneven leads the speculation that they're speculating adding 2 teams which would be absolutely ridiculous. certain divisions are going to be clearly harder (yet still have more teams that end up without the playoff lock). it's an ugly system.

Not really sold on it, but not completely against it.

Regular season will be more interesting, and the divisions seem to be well balanced for the most part. However I will be seriously pissed when the 9th and 10th placed team playoff wise are better than the 2nd/3rd team in a weak division.

If the (un)official proposal would go through the new alignment would introduce some strange divisional pairings:

* Calgary vs Edmonton.. in Pacific

* Montreal vs Miami in Central

* Dallas vs Winnipeg in Midwest

* New York / New Jersey vs Nashville in Atlantic

Red Wings lose CHI in their division, and we gain Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa, Boston, Buffalo..... win win win win win win
