The Houston Astros select OF Chuck Klein

.320 BA
300 HR
2,076 Hits
1,201 RBI
41.5 WAR

1x MVP
1x Triple Crown
2x MVP runner up
4x Home Run Champion

A great player to come off the bench and back up an already deep outfield. Can also play a bit of first base.

In case anyone is interested here are some bios I have recently completed. Am going to knock off a similar bio for every player on my team.

Lou Gehrig
Mike Schmidt
Oscar Charleston

That Charleston bio turned into one of the more interesting adventures I've had in ATD history (the research I found was pretty cool!)

The Houston Astros are going to go with a young, dominant reliver with their next pick and select RP Craig Kimbrel

11-4 Record
1.46 ERA
89 Saves
160.1 IP
283 Ks
0.911 WHIP
15.9 K/9
4.56 K/BB
3.5 BB/9
0.3 HR/9

Rookie of the year (2011)
1x Top 5 MVP voting (2012)
1x Top 10 MVP voting (2011)
2x Top 10 Cy Young voting.

Very young career but Kimbrel is putting up the best 2 year stretch of any reliever in history. His incredible fastball that can top out at 100 MPH and insane curveball that moves at 87 MPH make batters look like amateurs (Fastball has a whiff rate of 39%, curveball has a whiff rate of 56%). The Astros believe he can be an incredible weapon coming out of the pen.

Eh I can't get behind a pick of a guy that young to the league.

His peak is nice for a two year period but there's something to be said about a full career.

Also a lot of relievers better than Oliver at this point (although Kimbrel isn't one of them). Oliver's statistics as a whole are pretty weak for this kind of draft (at this point at least).

Also, Kimbrel doesn't have the best two year period of any reliever in history...

Eric Gagne does, and frankly it can be turned into a three year period.

Kimbrel is the best reliever in the game today (not named Rivera), so there's not much else for me say.

Beyond that

http://www.baseball-reference.com/pl...agneer01.shtml
http://www.baseball-reference.com/pl...imbrcr01.shtml

Eric Gagne's 2 year stretch and Kimbrel's are very comparable. Besides save #'s, Kimbrel is either around or better than Gagne in every advanced stat. Not to mention in only 2 1/4 seasons, Kimbrel has already posted a 6.2 WAR compared to Gagne's 11 WAR over 10 seasons. Longevity is nice and all, but if we're assuming that a player is playing at their peak ability, than Kimbrel is far from being a stretch IMO. Besides, he isn't even my closer.

That doesn't change the fact that there are relievers who had longer stretches of peak (albeit not as great) and also had full careers that were solid.

If Kimbrel, god forbid, got a career ending injury right now, he isn't a top-50 reliever of all-time..

He may have an excellent peak but what if his career falls off? That's why longevity is important..because you have their full career.

Kimbrel going now means we are judging him only on two seasons of baseball. The fact that we don't have a full (or at least longer) career to go off of is a detriment to his value.

So what we have to go off of Kimbrel is a two-time saves leader with two elite reliever seasons. Nothing to sneeze at..but his career stats just do not stack up with available relievers. Anyway I think you and I have just a difference of opinion on how a player should be judged.

I prefer a full career of good ball with a few elite seasons to just a few really elite seasons.

Yeah, it's just a matter of preference. When I'm voting in this draft, I'm going to be voting with the assumption that every player is playing in their prime. Longevity doesn't play a massive role to me; durability does on the other hand.

With the 345th overall pick in the 2013 HFBoards All-Time Draft, the Montreal Expos are pleased to select, from McClymonds High School in Oakland, California, a native of Oakland, California, C Ernesto Natalie Lombardi.

Over a seventeen year Hall of Fame career Ernie Lombardi was one of the most prolific offensive catchers in baseball history. The first catcher ever to capture a batting title in the modern era, which he did by hitting .342 in 1938 with the Cincinnati Reds, would go on to slug his way to 190 home runs and 990 career RBI's. He won his first batting title the same year that he captured the National League MVP Award, and would later capture a second four years later in 1942.

A .306 career hitter, Schnozz was he was affectionately known by teammates and fans alike for his prominent nose, would record a career OPS of .818 and an adjusted OPS of 126, one of the best markers ever by a back-stop. He was also capable behind the plate in terms of arm strength, leading the league in caught stealing percentage twice (including a high water mark of 58.5 percent in his 1938 MVP season) and his career mark of 47.1 percent ranks 51st on the all-time list.

*.306/.358/.460/.818 career slash line
*190 career home runs
*990 career RBIs
*126 career adjusted OPS
*1938 NL MVP Award
*1940 World Series champion
*2-time batting champion (first catcher ever to win a batting title)
*4-time top ten in OPS
*5-time top ten in home runs
*7-time All-Star Game selection
*8-time top ten in slugging percentage
*43.6 total career wins above replacement (16th all-time - catchers)

Darn. Good pick. Lombardi's good enough to start on a couple teams in this draft.
