they found bacterial life in lake Vostok that is less than 86% similar to any DNA mapped. That's pretty big. But it's the russians reporting this so who knows.

too new...maybe too hard to publish a scientific article from down there? They have to wait until May to go back to get confirmation samples. This is where i got it.

It takes a while to get published, once they get those confirmation samples and if those are in line with the first findings, it'll probably be published by Q4 2013, maybe Q1 2014, but with email and the internet it's sped up the peer-review process quite a bit.
But still, no article is approved as is. Usually "Accept with minor revisions" sometimes accept with major revisions, and then there's a 'soft' reject and a hard reject. Soft reject is pretty much the reviewers rejected it but the editor thinks that its more of an accept with major revisions. Even though an editor CAN over-rule the reviewers doing so makes them not want to review for you again and as an editor it's risky, so they don't technically over-turn the decision, but really they do. So that was a long winded "it takes a while to go from submitted to published" statement.

I have my apartment to myself between one of my roommates spending the next month in Israel and the other down in Austin for the next two weeks. It's pretty surreal and quiet.

yeah, that's what i meant by too new. I'm guessing they just shot the news out and haven't started the article. Probably wanted to be first to report in case someone else finds the same thing in one of their lakes down there.

Ah, Israel. i almost went on kibbutz with a girl. still wonder how that would have turned out. I'm not even vaguely Jewish, but apparently it didn't matter. I want to go to Austin, but way too little free time for that now. House to myself? About as likely as a trip to Austin. :'( what a bummer.

Uh, I kind of took the "no rush whatsoever" bit too literally. Just remembered that I promised to do an avvy for you a while ago.

How's this?

I changed my avatar - get to rock my Irish heritage leading up to St. Paddy's day by honoring the the Irish bard of rock and PITBULL at the same time.

Watch the winning streak commence....

Congratulations, eBay is really the best place to buy golf stuff, too bad it's always 40 dollars extra shipping when I buy from there

I was just reading about this. I can't decide if it's going to end like The Thing or Outbreak. Maybe both. Hooray!

Forgot how much he swears in that video, I just remembered it being the prime example of Nick Cage acting

No worries, just a heads up. The "no-swearing" -rule on this site seems to be quite strict.

Solid productive day yesterday:

- Cleaned up my house and basement and my hockey "workshop".
- Pulled my old Strat out of the basement, cleaned it up, re-installed the parts that had been off for a year, oiled up the fretboard, wired it up, and it's fully playable now (although it needs a new nut).
- Looked at wedding bands, suits, and started registering (which is extremely awkward...here's a list of things you are supposed to buy for me?).
- Made Philly cheese steak sandwiches (from ribeye steaks with sauteed onions and American cheese)
- Watched the Wild win
- Watched Edina win
- Drank too many beers and fell asleep playing Final Fantasy
- Slept for about 10 hours

Nice and super lazy day today. Chilling out, playing Sim City all day, and listening to some nice late 60s progressive rock. Feels good man.

I was at the gym today and I see this really cute short girl... I wanted to talk to her... But I wasn't sure if the gym is a good place to meet women...

One of my friends said it wasn't, anyone have experience with that ?
