Ah - our friend from the lockout. Is he the guy behind their latest streak?

He's been out since last March. I think he may be finished.

Nah, Montador would make a good depth defenseman on a team looking for a defensive dman. Has not been efficient in Chicago since he was told to play a stick waving style and not play the body <sarcasm>. No room for him on the blueline in Chicago and the Hawks could use the cap space. Garth Snow come one Down!

He has been cleared to play. Thinking this is to send him to Rockford to get him game ready

Hope someone claims him for cap purposes next year. But if not, he will be a good depth D for the playoff run. This jsut gives him some ice in the mean time.

There is no room for him in Chicago with Rozsival and Brookbank alternating the 6th D slot. If he clears, he'll stay in Rockford until injuries force him to be recalled. That's if his concussion issues are truly over, of course. He could turn into a vegetable with a light tap for all anyone knows. I would be surprised if he's claimed as I don't think anyone is desperate enough to try him out.

Can't be. They could have just sent him down for conditioning without waivers in the first place. This is a move to get him off the roster.

It's too bad because I liked Monty in Buffalo. Good teammate and a good bottom-pairing defenseman and he'll stick up for anyone. I was glad we shipped him to a good place in Chicago but he got a pretty bloated contract from the Hawks when he was re-signed that offseason and right off the bat it was an overpayment and it still is. He's not worth a $2.75M cap hit for the next two seasons, even now more than ever because of the concussion. $2M per would have been reasonable for him but he is about $1M overpaid and for a team like Chicago they could possibly go for a good player at the deadline with that cap space and roster spot so they're trying to see if anyone takes him for free. If not, they take the $1.85M in dead cap space to bury him. No one will claim him considering the contract and the injury. Way too risky. Unfortunately for him he's got too high of a cap hit and there's no room for him in the lineup. Both Brookbank and Rozsival are much cheaper and at this point are arguably playing just as well. I'm sure Bowman shopped him and found no takers (he has a limited NTC) and this is the next option. Again, sucks that it had to happen to a good guy but that's the business.

Could the Canes use a guy like Montador? Suppose it depends on the price?

It's more than you want to pay.

Only want to see Montador play so that Don Taylor can say "Steve Montador, your stallion stands..."

Montador is going down to get his game back together, but he wasn't sent down via the conditioning stint because Chicago's hoping someone will pick him up. If not, he'll go to Rockford, play games and get back in shape and if he's healthy, he'll be recalled to Chicago at some point, I would think.

The only way that happens is if a defenseman is injured in the future. That or a possible trade but I would say that is very unlikely unless the Hawks are acquiring a pretty good player. You don't fix something that isn't broken, so shipping anyone significant out would be stupid. In a trade, Chicago will be buyers and will most likely trade prospects/picks for a "rental" while not giving up anyone significant considering where they are right now. Brookbank and Rozsival have played well enough and are way cheaper to keep on the roster. As of now Montador's the eighth defenseman. There's no reason for him to be recalled unless there's an injury or one of Brookbank or Rozsival start playing poorly. Until then, he'll stay down there assuming there is no taker, which there won't be.

I think he'll be claimed. His contract isn't as bad for budget teams as his cap hit suggests:

~1M, 2.3M, 1.8M at a cap hit of 2.75/year.

I think he'd make a perfect partner for Edler and stabilize our D in terms of playing everyone on their proper side.

Steve Montador cleared Waivers today.

I'm afraid he might be done. Shame.

He'll play in Rockford for a while and we'll see. Things definitely don't look good though.

Assuming that he doesn't get called up later this season due to injuries, and doesn't get re-injured himself, I see a compliance buyout and a tryout contract in his future.

If he retires since he signed under 35 years old, wouldn't his cap hit go away?

Yes, but he's medically cleared to play -- he has to be to go on waivers -- so I doubt he'll retire. He had an interview the other week and it sounded like he was really looking forward to playing again.

I just also doubt any team will give him a real contract until they can be sure he can still play.

Maybe he could pair with Chris Campoli somewhere, perhaps get Ron Hainsey in on the action as well.

Strange no one claimed him, he was pretty awesome in Buffalo a while back. It probably has to do with his price tag, though.

Hopefully he goes down to the A and gets himself into game shape. He'll get another shot. He was still alright when he went out.

Waivers today: Ben Eager (EDM), Nick Johnson (PHX), Rostislav Olesz (CHI).
I'd read that Edmonton was not happy with Eager. He'll clear, as will Olesz. Johnson could possibly be picked up.

Dear GM's,

Please take a bad contract off our hands for nothing.

Thanks,
