Excited on getting Boldin, especially for just a 6th rounder. Would the Niners be able to somehow restructure his contract once he is acquired. If that's the case wouldn't the team be able to lessen his cap hit and at the same time he would still get the 6-7 million he is due?

I find it funny that Brees and Flacco are highest paid quaterbacks in the NFL.

No, he refused to renegotiate his contract. That's exactly why he was traded.

I find it insane that football players are even asked to do that. Doesn't seem like contracts even mean anything in the NFL.

They don't. It's a complete joke. The most violent sport played doesn't have guaranteed contracts. The next guy is in line to take your spot the second you are injured, "overpaid" (whose fault is that?), or just old, and you don't get jack.

This is why I always applaud athletes for taking teams for all they are worth. I may not agree with the deal in terms of value, but I will never get on a player for taking what a team is willing to pay him.

If I'm an NFL player I keep a list of teams that function like the Ravens and avoid them at all costs.

He's not going to re-negotiate. If he wasn't willing to do so in a place he said he really liked, he wouldn't do so here.

I find it a bit odd, though, that he said money wasn't an issue and that he wanted to be Raven, yet refused to re-negotiate. That tells me he still wants to play.

I always was under the impression that a part of each NFL contract was guaranteed, and it was just that there were additional non-guaranteed amounts. Is that incorrect?

Ed Reed very well could be coming to the Niners too.

Either way, tomorrow after 1pm should be fun!

Reed and Boldin fit needs, not as if we are just picking up players for the hell of it. if Reed is cheap, why not.

They're both perfect fits. It would feel weird after the fact, but there it is...

Yeah, I'd have a problem with anyone being picked up that is arguably on their last legs. Reed would be most welcome if/when Goldson ships out. I only wonder about the price.

Agreed. If Goldson is not being signed I hope we get Reed for a reasonable price. Would be great for mentoring the youngins (assuming we draft some safeties next month).

Can anyone with greater football knowledge say why Reed would be a downgrade to Goldson, besides age?

I'm not good with the foosball stats, but they almost seem equal at this point. And Reed's past couple seasons seem to have been improvement, rather than decline.

No hard feelings to Goldson if he walks. Ricky Jean Francois and Issac Sopoaga might be gone tomorrow too.

Age and Goldson is more of a punishing hitter. Goldson is a great safety but hes wanting big money. He commits some brain dead penalties and isn't very strong in coverage. Reed would be an upgrade in coverage and still has his great ball skills.

Yeah, I'm not sure Reed would be a downgrade, except that he might be losing a step because of age. But Goldson wasn't amazing in coverage, and he was good for at least one personal foul a game if not more. Not saying I don't want to keep him, but I don't think it would be a disaster to let him walk.
