But projecting forward, you've got a huge television deal coming in Canada with the CBC's Hockey Night in Canada contract expiring in 2014. The cost of television rights for live sports have skyrocketed and this deal will end up being huge. Local television rights continue to grow across the board, with the Kings and Predators both getting significant revenue increases in their most recent deals with local TV broadcasters.

Factor in potential expansion fees or the relocation of an unhealthy Coyotes franchise and the salary cap will be on the rise.

"Fans are coming back and it is not unrealistic to project the cap getting back up there quickly in the next three or four years," said one source.
http://insider.espn.go.com/nhl/blog/...market-centers

Expansion is down the road. That won't be part of HRR. The owners keep the entire expansion fee. The players don't get a 50% cut of the expansion fee. The expansion fee for the Markham team will be outrageous. That team will print money. The new TV deal in Canada won't count as HRR until the 15-16 season based that money being part of the 14-15 HRR. Those TV contracts are usually done in the summer before the final season begins. Sometime this summer. The NBA Board of Governors will be voting in mid to late April on the fate of the Sacramento Kings moving to Seattle. A basketball team in Seattle paves the way for a NHL team. The new arena is linked to the NBA team. The PHX team is the money pit. The NHL owners pay the bills.

From Katie Strang:

Yes, the power-play has improved, as of late, but the unit has been abysmal through too many significant stretches this season. Ranked dead-last in the league at times, the Rangers (23rd, 15%) still lack a true power-play specialist and you can bet that a right-handed defenseman that plays the PP will be a top priority as the trade deadline approaches

There are about 4 right handed defensemen who play the powerplay in the NHL. Sather needs to broaden his search.

Yzerman is working the phones, but as demonstrated by the lack of trade activity around the league, itís easier said than done to get something that makes sense.

"To sit here and say, 'Iím going to do something big,' thereís nothing big that can be done at this time," Yzerman said. "Itís not like we just sit here and do nothing all day. You talk to people, you see if thereís anything that makes sense. For a lot of reasons itís difficult to find a fit, to find the right players, the right salaries to make a trade. You donít just do something to do it."

If Yzerman does act, expect a traditional hockey deal where itís a player who helps him past this season. In other words, heís not looking for a pending UFA/rental player.

"Rental players cost you draft picks or young players, weíre not interested in that," Yzerman said. "Thatís why we signed free agents in the summer, to fill those places. If thereís a trade that makes sense where a team has a need and we have a need, then it would be addressed that way."

The deadline is three weeks from this Wednesday.

No one. Instead, they'll believe that they're only a few free agents away from the playoffs, and will sign the Hudler's and Wideman's to bloated contracts.

Wideman's contract has to be one of the worst in the league.

I still like Wideman as a player. But man is he overpaid. Calgary needs a change in management. It is too much of a hockey hotbed to be struggling this much over the last several years. I think you see their outlook begin to change at this year's deadline.

They need to trade Iginla, Kipper. Buy out Jay-Bouw.

I think they could get someone to overpay for JayBo. Especially if they eat some cap. I want to see a firesale, dammit.

I'd take Glencross for a 3rd, but they will ask for a second + B prospect.

Glencross makes too much money.

Besides it looks like he has a wrist injury

Please don't mention Babchuk.

Is that Sather's kid Shannon scouting all of the Kings games?

With all the interested bidders in Iginla I can't see him going for anything less than a 1st rounder (albeit late), a prospect & player

What is a full year of Gaborik worth?

Clowe to the Rangers, Canadiens, Leafs or Penguins says Brad May

http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/t...er-ryan-clowe/

Not sure how I feel about that. He can sure replace some of Prust toughness but at what price?

Clowe would probably be a great fit (He's not putting anything in the back of the net, but you know he can), but I see him being sought after by a lot of teams if SJ doesn't resign him, so he'd probably be too expensive for us, but stranger things have happened.

I like Morrow as a depth LW option for us, and I can see him going cheaper than Clowe even though he's outproducing him this year, after a terrible start to the year as well.

The concern is Clowe is too slow, even slower than Boyle.

Morrow is garbage these days. Don't see him knocking anyone out of the lineup.

Clowe is similar to Dubinsky and he's run into a Dubinsky-like scoring drought. But he's a great piece for the 3rd line and I'd be willing to move a B-level prospect and pick for him.

I'm not disagreeing with him not being what he has been in the past, and he started off this season terribly, but let him play within his limits, 3rd line minutes, maybe bumping up to 2nd line duties on nights he's playing well, and he would be a good option for us as far as Depth goes. We're weak on the left side if you don't count Gaborik there, another guy that could add maybe 25-30ish points in this shortened season could go a long way.
