I believe McIlrath would have been up here by now, had he not missed the beginning of their season.

I dont think anyone here has watched St. Croix regularly, so nobody really knows. His stats are impressive and he gained some size since being drafted, which is good, as are reports that his defense and the dirty area game improved.

However, our information is limited. Normally, we would see a prospect in Traverse, the preseason and maybe the WJC and WC. But since there was a lockout and he is a citizen of Canada, we didn't see any of that. Last we saw MSC was a year and a half ago, in his first post-draft games. A lot of reports say he has shown a ton of progress since then.

Lets give it another half a year to see how he does in Traverse. Maybe he will even play in Hartford this play after Oil is eliminated.

The way he thinks on the ice, it is clear that he is still learning. Remember how DZ looked in his sophomore year on defense? You could tell he is thinking instead of doing things instinctively, which slows you down by a split second. But that wouldve been gone by now had he not been out until January.

His bigger issue is balance. I think that could be fixed in a few weeks of hardcore skating lessons. But since he cant take time off now to go learn to skate, it will need to wait intil the summer. If he goes to Barbara Underhill or a similar coach over the summer, he will be in the NHL to start the next season.

I think what you are seeing in his lack of balance is most likely due to him having to shut down training and stay off of his leg for a while due to his injury. His skating his fine. For a guy his size his leg strength needs to be suitable for his frame. Taking 2 months off from training and then getting into game-shape on the fly might mean he is still working out the quirks

Freshman forward Boo Nieves was experiencing flu-like symptoms, and the line chart for the series finale included four skaters on Nieves’ line. In addition to usual linemates sophomore Phil Di Giuseppe and senior Kevin Lynch, senior Lindsay Sparks was included as well.

Once the game began, however, Nieves looked like his usual self. On one play in particular, he drove to the net and drew a penalty. With the man advantage, junior defenseman Mac Bennett rifled home a power-play goal.

“(Nieves) was sick, but he really played well,” Berenson said. “For a kid that was sick, he’s a pretty good player.”

Berenson said he was surprised that Boo Nieves (8G, 21A) wasn't selected to the CCHA's All-Rookie team. Nieves was given honorable mention.

The Michigan people compare Nieves to Pacioretty who was a freshman at 19. He had 15 goals and 39 points in his only season at Michigan.

I didn't watch a single NCAA game since the lockout ended, but I'm going to watch the Minnesota games on Friday and Saturday. It's the first round of the WCHA tournament vs. Bemidji State. Both games start at 8:07 PM EST, but the game on Friday will be delayed on national TV on Fox College Sports Atlantic at 10:30 PM. The game on Saturday is live on Fox College Sports Central. If it goes to a third game, it will be on Sunday, also at 8:00 PM EST on FCS Atlantic.

Pacioretty played on an incredibly loaded team, allowing him to rack up points.

I didn't say that he was well-rounded; just that he's more well-rounded than given credit for. He has a good amount of work to do at the pro level on his game physically and defensively... plus some skating work wouldn't hurt either. But this isn't the case of your typical undersized forward taking advantage of crappy junior defensemen. Like a Justin Azevedo. He has a good enough base defensively and physically that an NHL future is perfectly realistic. He's not a top flight prospect but he's definitely in that second tier.

Usually offensive guys are easy to tell in their very first year. If they show an ability to score ~40 points in the AHL immediately, they go on to have a career. If they struggle for a couple of years and then begin to slowly improve, they run out of time because by the time they become AHL stars, they are in their mid-20s, unable to improve any further.

But if you score 40-45 points in your rookie season, then progress to something close to a point per game next year, that's a great sign. Usually it means that he always was able to score at the AHL level, just that in his first year, he was on the lower lines with worse line mates, less ice time and less responsibility, so he wasn't able to do as much damage as his talent allows.

7pm Swedish time, which I believe is 1pm ET. Skelleftea's series starts today and HV71's starts tomorrow.

Which site do you guys use to follow Lindberg and Fasth?

This one?

http://www.hockeyligan.se/

I like their player stats. It has an entire game log for each player.

Yeah, that one. And on their individual player pages it has video highlights of each goal and assist the player is involved in.

For live game scoring, I use http://stats.swehockey.se. "SM-slutspel" is the Elitserien playoffs.

I could see the Pacioretty comparison. Although I think Nieves is more playmaker than goal scorer at this point. He looks like a gem.

If Nieves turns into Pacioretty, we hit the jackpot. MaxPac is a top 15 LW IMO.

Daren Eliot who does the Michigan games on Fox Sports Detroit. He does TV work for the Wings too. Former NHL goalie. He loves Nieves. So does Dave Starman of CBS Sports. Sather tried to sign Kreider after his frosh and sophomore years. They had Miller play in the AHL as an 19 year old. Stepan signed after 2 years at Wisconsin. The Rangers will probably look to turn Nieves pro by next spring.

Which has no bearing on his eligibility to play in the AHL, in case that was why you were asking Boyler.

I thought that if he had his rights owned prior to being drafted he would have to go play juniors if he left school before his sophomore year?
