Sadly the whole year the bench changes have been wanting....sign of an undisciplined team. The coach hasn't been immune from poor bench management either with his line combo's, benchings etc. It's been a team effort ..sadly screwing up has been the a "team" constant this year more times than not..

The timing of some line changes has been suspect as well.

I'd have to disagree there. When you sneak onto the bench as the play is going the other way, its on you to make sure you're vocal about the fact that you're coming off. Briere made no hand signals and if someone is screaming out for a change, the on-ice mics usually pick it up (I heard nothing when Briere changed).

It was a very poor decision by Danny to change when he did / the way that he did and it's absolutely inexcusable for you to not make sure the guy who's supposed to be coming on for you hears/sees you when you make a change like that.

its ok im sure Lavi will give him an extra shift or more TIO, for it..

Lavi seems to reward dumb moves, instead of benching. esp Briere.

It's the mark of an unfocused and uncaring team, I think.

Lavi's been making a lot dumb decisions behind the bench this year. Pulling Bryz for the extra attacker when the other team had the puck was another one that came to mind.

Big changes, huge disappointment for Flyers
Quote:
As for the coach, some believe Peter Laviolette's job was saved by Sunday's victory over the Sabres. I doubt it's that severe.

"I think Peter and our coaches have done a good job," Holmgren said. "I think our team for the most part is well-prepared."

With more time to practice recently, the power play has improved from its dismal start and the penalty kill has as well. But the muffed line change was not an isolated incident - Kimmo Timonen could be seen screaming at someone to jump over the boards as he came off during the Bruins game, for example. They also don't communicate well off the puck, and play tentatively too often, and for long stretches.

"Obviously, 'Lavvy' is an attack-mode coach," Holmgren said. "I think we have the players to fit that. Last summer we talked about changing our approach a little in how we defend our own end, and I think there have been growing pains in doing that. We need for everything to come together. We've seen it in bits and pieces but we need it to be on an every-night level. And that hasn't happened."

Laviolette gets the rest of the season to fix that, I believe. True, Terry Murray, a potential replacement, was fired after 29 games coaching the Kings last season. But that was an 82-game schedule, and new Kings coach Darryl Sutter left Murray's defensive system intact.

Could Murray do that with Lavvy's offense-first system? Hard to imagine.

Not a big fan of Murray coaching the team. He hasnt done **** with the Phantoms. And I know, the Phantoms suck, but Patterson did a better job with the EXACT same players.

He'll get the full season. A poor start next year could result in his firing, though. I think the Flyers will be surprisingly patient this season, and I like what Holmgren said about 'young players in big situations' and how it 'bodes well for our future'.

I have to feel the organization knew making the big trades last year could result in a rough transition. Homer stated in 24/7 "I am not sure if we will be a better team or a worse team, but we will be a different team." I like that they are being patient and hopefull they keep the young core.

I think they kind of expected the type of year the Flyers are having this year to have happened last year.

I think they should fire the entire coaching staff. I damn sure don't want to see Berube as an interim coach, and I don't want a Murray return.
Lindy Ruff is available, and I think he'd do a good job.
I'd also fire Paul Holmgren. Homer has screwed up this team with his deals in the past. Watching the LA Flyers win the Cup last year was my final straw with Paul Holmgren at the head of this team.
I'd like to see him replaced with someone outside of the Flyers organization.
I don't know who I'd replace Homer for, but I just want him gone!

Knowledgeable fans should have expected this..what we are seeing is not really a surprise. The Pronger loss just created a cascade of problems with this team that was not addressed in the offseason. Holmgren went all out with the free agent sweepstakes although I question the Parise and Suter attempt for various reasons some of them pointed out by Meltzer in a blog post during the summer. The Weber one was bold and necessary but unfortunately Nashville was too proud and fiscally stupid to let go. Then again with the new CBA and revenue sharing deal between big and small markets the Flyers will be subsidizing their sorry @sses anyway so I guess they played their cards right to some extent. Anyway, after they lost the sweepstakes their plan B or Z wasn't adequate to fill the holes that were made worse b/c we put Carle and Jagr in a holding pattern who subsequently left. Fedotenko, Foster, Gervais, Knuble, Gagne have all been pretty much sideway moves. Then for whatever crazy reason Holmgren considered Leighton an NHL worthy backup only to backup a crappy backup with another crappy back up and terming it INSURANCE Then of course we didn't address getting a faceoff specialist. I can go on..

The short of it is that if Holmgren fires Lavi it will be an indictment of himself b/c he shares blame so it's no surprise he's circling the wagons and papa Snider and his mafia style good ole boy network most likely approves although I'm sure he's getting antsy as the grim reaper stands behind him. The Bryz acquisition probably keeps him awake some nights as well no matter his public endorsements of him as an "outstanding" goalie. What is outstanding is his contract!

Bob was a good goalie for us, when you consider that we were giving him NHL work far earlier in his development than we should have. He held the starting job for a season on talent alone.

I know this statement is true for me, at least. I expected them to have the kind of year they had lst year this year and vice versa. Strange days here in Philadelphia, lol.
