I'm trying not to get my hopes TOO high for this one, but this guy does seem like a good hockey player, and it'd be awesome to see a guy in Detroit that you KNOW is a huge fan of the Wings. Always nice seeing that. Maybe Detroit fans should be rooting for Kronwall to win a Norris so that it helps the odds that he chooses Detroit, the idea of potentially being paired with the best d-man in hockey!

Think it's basically a sure thing he chooses us (dekeyser)?

I think its the safest bet, though, I would say Tampa is the dark horse.

He's not going to be a top pairing guy. He still needs to gain a lot of weight, he looks 170 still. He could be a #4 though

I think he's going to be a really effective player. I doubt he'll light it up offensively at the NHL level, but he can move the puck (and he's a very good skater, which helps in doing that) and play solid defense. I think given the prospects we've got in the system, Danny would be a great fit. I think Babcock would absolutely love him too, so he'd get ice time.

Dekeyser sounds for me more like another Mattias Bäckman. And that's not bad.
He doesn't have the shot accuracy of Lidstrom did but he has good hockey sense and is a smart defenseman. He's good in all 3 zones and knows when to jump up into the play. He won't produce goals like Lidstrom did but is a GREAT puck mover and can set up plays from the blueline.

I would go with Brad Stuart (but bigger). Tough, crease clearer who is an above average skater and puck mover but won't rack up many points.

I think he's eligible to to sign in the next week or so. I honestly have no idea on the rules for NCAA prospects, but looking back to big name college free agents like Bozak or Read, they signed in April and March respectively.

WMU has the NCAA playoffs coming up so I don't think he'd sign before their season is over. So late March, early April seems more likely.

Can he be offered an NHL-contract immediately, when the playoffs are over, or do we have go with that AHL amateur try-out route first?

Does any rule prevent offering/signing him to NHL-contract? If not, then of course try to get him.

well it would be a treat to get this kid, then we would have some good young players already on the team (smith and kindle) and then good young prospects

I disagree with that statement. He's taller, but skinnier, he's a lot weaker, very good skater, not very tough or really even a crease clearer to be honest, but he's sort of like Smith in that regards. He's a good puck mover though.

http://www.truehockey.com/articles/R...Lehtera-to-NHL

Quote:
Broncos Head Coach Andy Murray, yes the same Andy Murray, tells me all 30 NHL clubs have done extensive scouting work on Dekeyser.

Who has the inside track? Those close to Dekeyser will tell you he’s yet to make a decision but many believe he’ll eventually sign with the Detroit Red Wings, his childhood team.

Red Wings Assistant GM Jim Nill, whose son Trevor grew up playing with Dekeyser, has spent extensive time recruiting him going back to last season.

Then again so has just about every other NHL team. Several prominent NHL Executives have been spotted with Dekeyser including Tampa Bay GM Steve Yzerman.

Murray is the first to tell you Dekeyser needs to go now.

He’s described as a good skating D-man who moves the puck and sees the ice well. He’s made his biggest improvement in the offensive end where he can shoot the puck and chip in on the power play.

Dekeyser, unlike Justin Schultz who signed with Edmonton last summer, was never drafted. He played his junior hockey in the BCHL before landing at Western Michigan.

Current Grand Rapids Griffins Head Coach Jeff Blashill coach Dekeyser his freshman season before leaving the program. Blashill worked under Red Wings Head Coach Mike Babcock last year prior to replacing Kurt Fraser in the AHL this season.

Dekeyser came into the program at 164 pounds but is now closer to 190. He’ll play at around 200 when it’s all said and done.

Dekeyser, a left shot D-man, is attractive to NHL teams for a number of reasons including the fact you don’t have to give up anything to get him. The combination of his size and skillset should allow him to come in and contribute right away.

NHL scouts tell me he compares well to Flyers defenseman Braydon Coburn.
Found this article today.

Looks like worst kept secret that he is going to join the Wings.

Seems promising but I'm not going to get my hopes up until they put pen to paper.

That might be a reach, but that's what I was thinking/hoping for as well. A long list of things would have to break right for that to happen, but if Dekeyser Soze were good enough, I wouldn't mind seeing....

Kronwall - Ericsson
Dekeyser - Smith
Lashoff - Kindl

(yes, Kindl has grown on me as a bottom-pairing PMD)

Edit: Just realized that's a Euro-developed pair, a college-developed pair, and a junior-developed pair. This makes my OCD happy.

No, we could sign him today if he wanted to go to the Wings and he were willing to abandon his team in the middle of the playoffs. Something tells me that won't happen But even if Western makes it the Frozen Four, his season will be done the second week of April, and if he wants to go pro this year, he may very well look to sign with someone at that time.

He's currently listed as 198lbs for what it's worth.

I've seen him at the rink, on campus, and at the library (bar in Kalamazoo), he's not 198.
