Rather have Hemsky than Stafford, but rather have cap room this Summer than Hemsky.

It's a net increase of $1m, but we have space.
We have $50,567,857 committed to 15 players (11 F, 3D, 1G) and one buried player ($300,000 penalty for McCormick), which leaves $13,732,143 in cap space ($20,162,143 to work with during the 10% off-season increase) for next season with eight players to sign.

We have one significant FA in Hodgson (RFA) and there's not much on the market that is interesting.
Besides Perry who is unlikely to sign here, the somewhat unappealing Horton, likely to re-sign before free agency Smid, and Bozak and Clarkson who will get stupid money from someone, there isn't much.

Yep. Cap space in and of itself is worthless to us.

I wouldn't mind seeing us try to sign Zubrus in the off season. A solid vet defensive forward.

He's a much better player than Stafford.

I honestly don't give a damn if dudes on a message board don't think he's "tough" or "big" enough for them.

What's the point in acquiring Hemsky for Stafford though? The team is in no position to compete next year; he'll play the role of "2nd line winger" for a season and then walk. That's a net loss by every imaginable metric.

You'd get more bang-for-your-buck trading Stafford for a 4th round pick

Ben Kuzma of the Vancouver Province provides some potential options for the Canucks to consider if they plan on finding more depth at centre.

Some of the names include, Panthers' Shawn Matthias, Sabres' Jochen Hecht, Islanders' Mart Reasoner, and Lightning's Nate Thompson.

"The Western Conference will be a playoff mine field - one mis-step and kaboom - and there are few sellers with tight races in a shortened season. But unless the Canucks start winning consistently, waiting until the deadline may be too late," stated Kuzma.

Is he? He's got more natural talent, but he seems to be settling into a soft, one-way, 40-45 pt winger. Yay, we need more of those.

Hemsky has played better than Stafford this year--not many who haven't--but Stafford was the better(and healthier) player over the previous two seasons. Stafford is younger, too. At best, you're shuffling deck chairs.

I'm guessing a 5th or 6th, but with the dearth of sellers a 4th may not be off the table.

I doubt we'd get anything at this point beyond future considerations. with a few games less for a player with little worth.

Of Sabres who've played at least 10 games, he's 2nd in GA/60 at 5-on-5 and 1st in +/-/60 at 5-on-5. I could see a smart team throwing a 5th or 6th our way for a decent depth player.

Well it's true to say stranger things have happened. We got a 1st for Gausted, after all.

And there are plenty of teams who use advanced stats in their evaluation of talent on other teams to warrant interest. He as a 4th line/PK specialist winger is the sort of player most teams looking to make a deep run will be interested in. A 4th or 5th seems about right.

A clearly finished Påhlsson returned a minor leaguer and two 4th rounders last year, so Hecht is surely worth something more than "future considerations".

Would anyone be interested in shuffling Stafford out for Keith Ballard?

Not sure I want Regehr, Ballard, and Weber all in the lineup next year

I think the problem with our PP stems further than one player but I like the first half. I know I bang on about him but I've seen Chimera a couple of times (albeit not this season) but Chimera seems to be an aggressive, tough, physical player with serious speed and an ability to chip in 20-25 goals. What would it take to get him?

However I like Ballard, his solid. But I'm not sure how much he offers more than Brennan because I don't know much about his game in detail.

Ballard has been pretty good this year (Top 4 worthy, easily), and AV seems to have a strange dislike for him. If we could pull off a Stafford for Ballard trade, I would be psyched.

Ew. If we're buying low on a guy, I'd like it to be a player who at one point in time filled a need for us. Even at his best, Ballard's defense never really crept above average.

Regehr will get minimum a 2nd
Leopold will get minimum a 2nd
Hecht will get 4th

I expect 4 picks in the top 60

Not sure the Canucks want Stafford after the Booth experiment which has gone horribly wrong. They also have a lot of tweener wingers who can on occasion provide what Stafford can for short periods at a time ( Higgins, Raymond, Kassian, Hansen, hell even Jensen might get a shot on the wing before this season is out ) With that said, I am sure that any excuse to get out of Ballard's contract will draw GMMG's attention.

With Ballard you are getting more of what we have ( Myers and Ehrhoff )...smooth skating D man with flashes of brilliance and a lethal hip check....but also poor decision making and awful reads in his own zone. If it wasn't for Tanev he would be a healthy scratch most nights.

He could be bought out by Vancouver this summer as well....So we could get him for free then if interested.

Look who he has been paired with most of the season. Tanev is the key.
