Mid-Season Grades

We have done this in the past and it always seems interesting and fun. Given we are past the mid season point, lets do a mid-term report card for the Blues.

For the sake of having comparable scores, lets assume the grades are based on a scoring standard... Compare the player to his peers at the same position. How does Petro compare to other #1 defensmen? How does Nichol compare to other 4th line centermen?

Letter grades as follow:

A+, A, A- = Player was above +85% of their peers.

B+, B, B- = Player was above +70% of their peers.

C+, C, C- = Player was above +55% of their peers.

D+, D, D- = Player was above +40% of their peers.

F = Player was horrific!

You can give "I" for incomplete meaning a play had not played enough for evaluation.

BACKES-C. He's been fine defensively, but he can't handle a puck this season.
BERGLUND-B+. He's shooting the puck more and crashing the net with authority.
CRACKNELL-I
D'AGOSTINI-I
LANGENBRUNNER-I
MCDONALD-C. Pretty meh grade for a pretty meh player this season.
MURRAY-I.
NICHOL-B. He does what he's supposed to. Still dominating the faceoff dot, giving decent minutes.
OSHIE-A-. One of the most consistent forwards this season.
PERRON-B. He's made a lot of amazing plays, but at the same time he's made some terrible plays and took way too many penalties early on.
PORTER-I
REAVES-B-. He's been decent, I just wish he would drop the gloves more often.
SCHWARTZ-C+. He's been good defensively, but hasn't really provided much in the offensive zone.
SOBOTKA-A++- You can't ask much more from Soby this year. He's so consistent, and he can play anywhere you want him too and just works very hard.
STEEN-B- The expiriment at center hasn't gone too bad, but I still think he's a winger ideally.
STEWART-A. Only thing stopping me from giving him an A+ is he's had a couple of lulls in the season where he wasn't at the top of his game. Otherwise, no complaints.
TARASENKO-I

COLE-B- He has his ups and downs like most young Dmen.
JACKMAN-A. Solid as a rock this year. Chipping in some offense too lol.
PIETRANGELO-B-. His game is starting to turn around, but overall he hasn't played up to his standards in my opinion.
POLAK-B. He's had some off games, but for a third pairing Dman, he's been solid.
REDDEN-C. He's been all over the spectrum from being one of our best Dmen on any given night, to being so bad that I want to gouge my eyes out.
RUSSELL-D+. He's been better lately, but he's had an absolutely brutal stretch of games.
SHATTENKIRK-A. Love Shatty's game this year. Solid in his own zone, creative in the offensive zone.

ALLEN-B-. If we're comparing him to other 3rd stringers, he's been great. Comparing him to a backup, like I have with my grade, I'd say he's been decent.
ELLIOTT-F. Just brutal this season. He may not get another chance in St. Louis.
HALAK-D. His record is alright, but he hasn't really made the key saves when we need him to. His overall play is not on par with the rest of the #1 goalies in the NHL.

Backes c+ - Thinking to much about being on the defensive side of the puck or lack of conditioning seems to be killing him in the offensive zone.
berglund b+ - Until recently he only was showing up on the PP. He needs to keep his foot on the pedal.
cracknell b - Playing very well on the 4th line as far as I am concerned
d'agostini c+ - Just playing average
langenbrunner i
mcdonald c - Haven't liked his game at all.
murray i
nichol b+ Great play from the 4th line. Contributes on PK.
oshie a- - He just brings it.
perron a- - I don't understand the amount of hate he gets on here relative to how he plays.
porter a- very very underrated forecheck, hounds the puck, brings it
reaves b - For some reason I want to see him in front of the net on the PP.
schwartz a- - High IQ and vision. Probably going to be one of the Top 5 players on our team in 3 years, maybe sooner. Does a lot of dirty work, very high effort level.
sobotka a - I substantially have underrated and undervalued Sobotka in the past. Not anymore.
steen b - Wish he was on the LW.
stewart a - I was one of the few people who believed Stewart could thrive here. He is right now and god dang can he skate.
tarasenko b - Wait till he completely adjusts and we have Elite offensive player.

cole b- Solid job considering level of competition
jackman a - Jackman hasn't given anyone a reason to complain at all
pietrangelo b+ - Not sure if serious
polak b Maybe a little to high of a grade.
redden c - Occasionally his vision helps him make a good pass, but also has many blunders
russell c - He has been better the last two games, hopefully he continues
shattenkirk a+ - What a great player. Armstong is still smiling.

No explanations for goalies.
allen b+
elliott d+
halak c+

PIETRANGELO- C My Favorite Player struggling without a true top 4 Left D partner and the NHL knows it. 'nuff said.
POLAK- B Rock Solid defender.
REDDEN- D worth the low cost risk at the time, Is too slow in today's NHL.

ELLIOTT F as in FAIL

LANGENBRUNNER: I

OSHIE: B
PERRON: C
PORTER: I/A (for the short time he's been here, he's been impressive)
REAVES: D (this is not the same Reaves I remember, dissapointed)
SCHWARTZ: B (only because he had a slow start, but has been solid for a while)
SOBOTKA: A++ (one of our best players so far this year, IMO)
STEEN: I/B (wish he was back on wing, but need him to center)
STEWART: A+ (this is the Stewie I'm glad to have back!)
TARASENKO: I/B (started strong, looking forward to see how he bounces back)

COLE: C
JACKMAN: high B
PIETRANGELO: low B (and I might be too forgiving here)
POLAK: C
REDDEN: C/D
RUSSELL: D
SHATTENKIRK: A++ (our best D so far this year, most consistent, IMO)

ALLEN: high B (for his competiveness & ability to not lose composure...thus far)

BACKES-C+ (looks like a 3rd liner this year. Maybe he will pick it up tho. If not a demotion o we could con somebody with a awesome trade. )
BERGLUND-B+ (still think he can get to that next level. Maybe he's halfway there already.)
CRACKNELL-I (sry haven't seen him to much either)
D'AGOSTINI-D+ (better be careful, might get his spot stolen)
LANGENBRUNNER-I (will prolly retire after this year unless he rehabs good and a team is desperate)
MCDONALD-C+ (really helps our power play but been lacking some this season. Hope to see him back soon also tho.)
MURRAY-I (sry haven't seen this guy to much)
NICHOL-C
OSHIE-B+ (one of our hardest workers and exciting to watch, hope u get better soon)
PERRON-B (made a couple dumb plays, takes bad penalties this year, but he still puts the puck in the net)
PORTER-C (if he keeps it up he can have a spot next year I think)
REAVES-C (looked better last year, been not doing much this year)
SCHWARTZ-B (been looking better as the season goes on)
SOBOTKA-B (won that game for us last Saturday)
STEEN-B-
STEWART-A+ (the complete packag this year)
TARASENKO-B (hope he gets back on the ice soon. Started of an A then started looking kinda gassed.)

COLE- C+
JACKMAN- B+ (I rag on him for crushing Halak but he is approaching his highest point totals of his carrer in a shortened season and he's pretty solid defensively. Keep it up!!!)
PIETRANGELO-C (I know he's capable of playing much better)
POLAK-B+
REDDEN-C
RUSSELL-B
SHATTENKIRK-A (our best defenseman)

ALLEN-A (7-1 hard to argue with that)
ELLIOTT-F
HALAK-C+

I was going to do my own grades, but instead I am just going to copy yours. You nailed it.

Also a big to the "instructors" giving Perron anything below a B. He is second on the team in points and scoring at a pace that would put him at 28 goals and 33 assists over 82 games. His penchant for taking offensive zone penalties rightfully should keep him from being an "A" player, but other than that he is performing as he should.

It seems like fans in St. Louis have some strange bias against skill. Everyone wants so badly for the Blues to have offensive weapons then complains because Perron is too fancy for their tastes. Just a giant fail all around.

To those calling out the C grade for Perron...

Okay, I probably should have elaborated more on why I gave Perron a C. I still stand by that grade, but it should be a high C. I don't doubt his skill and he's one of my favorite players on the team. For me, I value certain aspects of a player's game overall. I don't really pay attention to stats, yeah I know they are important, but I base my own opinion on what I see in a player's game. When it comes to Perron so far this year, the things that jump out as negative to me are the consistent dumb penalties and the unnecessary puck-hogging from time-to-time. Just comparing him to other first line wingers I follow (because that was his position for most of the first half) and he ends up at a C. Of course it's arguable, but this is all just in fun.

Now Reaves, yeah I probably should have given him at least a C+, my bad.

Backes b- We`ve seen a lot more from him still hoping to
berglund b+ finally looking like what we heard he was going to be,always seemed to have it when he wanted to
cracknell insufficient data
d'agostini c hasnt really found a fit though
langenbrunner d injury could be a reason was it bothering all the time?
mcdonald b-
nichol b
oshie b- hard working and filling a role but I think we`ve seen more from him
perron b- really showing some things I dont remember ever seeing him do,outmuscling someone off the puck at midice, but the penaltys bring him down (not all really deserved)
porter b+ not his first time here and showing he can do some things
reaves c seen more from him
schwartz b responded well to opportunities still a rookie so he gets graded a little differently I am more convinced though that hes going to be good
sobotka a heart of gold speaks soft and carrys a big stick sort of guy I think
steen b- to be fair hes probably forced to adjust
stewart a now thats why everyone was excited about him coming here
tarasenko a- dipped off a little then injured

cole b- could still go either way seen good and not so good
jackman a I was always undecided on him liking him a lot though
pietrangelo b+
polak b
redden c-
russell c-
shattenkirk b+

allen b not stellar but steady enough, if he improves and adapts he could be something we waited for
elliott d- not really deserving an f but not good enough on this team
halak c not great or even really good think by now he should be showing more. Doesnt really deserve a d though think what the record would be if he wasnt doing better than Elliot

Just to put things into perspective. Chris Stewart has as many points right now in approximately the same number of games as…

Jonathan Toews
Kovalchuk
Rick Nash
Kopitar
Sedin
Taylor Hall

and even more than
Hossa
Ovechkin
Bobbly Ryan

So proud of Stewart this year!

BACKES D not playing like a first line center
BERGLUND B scoring but needs to play "angry" more often
CRACKNELL C like the effort, seems to have a high hockey IQ
D'AGOSTINI C- not playing like a top 9 guy
LANGENBRUNNER I probably needs to hang'em up
MCDONALD C down from last year, still need him to create on PP
MURRAY I
NICHOL C+ is exactly what we need on the 4th line
OSHIE B could have twice the pts with better linemates
PERRON B has stats comparable to Ovechkin and Parise
PORTER B reminds me of Mel Gibson in Payback
REAVES C- fan but easily replaced
SCHWARTZ B amazing improvement
SOBOTKA A can't ask for more
STEEN I
STEWART B+ man on fire
TARASENKO I

COLE C much to prove but have seen positives
JACKMAN B should we move him to forward? love the new O
PIETRANGELO B+ taking step back on decisions, still one of the best
POLAK C+ glue to defense and love his physical style
REDDEN C hoped for more
RUSSELL C improving but not the player from last year yet
SHATTENKIRK A why did Avs ever let this guy go? Shatty > EJ

ALLEN B savior of Blues to this point
ELLIOTT D- head doctor? really sad to see such a collapse
HALAK C as a #1 so far he's disappointed, but on the rise

I would love it if the Blues had Player/Fan Conferences so we could meet face to face and discuss their report card. I personally would grade Reaves higher so he didn't beat my ass.

You gave McDonald a B. I would assume as scoring line wingers, he and Perron would have similar evaluation criteria. One of them has 3 goals and 11 points in 18 games is a defensive liability and currently injured. The other has actually made some really nice plays in his own end this year (and admittedly some bad ones), gets some (not a lot) penalty kill time which shows the coach has some faith in his defensive game, and has 9 goals and 20 points in 26 games. Which one is having the better year? Hmmm.

Just more lunacy by the baffling faction of posters who have decided Perron is somehow expendable. Looking through the ratings, if you have McDonald graded higher than Perron (and a few people actually do), I would like to hear any logic to defend that.

I don't mean to come off as a jerk. I really am perplexed by this sudden crowd of Perron bashers.
