You've got 2 buyouts that you can use in either this coming offseason or the following one. My guess is Horcoff is a compliance buyout in the 2014 offseason, so really we only have 1. Since you can't re-sign your own compiance buyout, it's possible to work out a trade-and-buyout deal with another team.

Say Philly wants to keep Briere for a few more years but can't afford to carry his $6.5m cap hit after this year. They could potentially work out a deal where they trade Briere to us along with something of actual value to us (1st rounder, for example) for a lesser asset (lower round pick or prospect we don't want). We buyout Briere, who signs back with Philly for a lower overall cap hit, but ends up with more money in his pocket. We get an asset, and all it costs is money and one of the comlpiance buyouts. Though the Rangers would probably be a better team to use in my example since Slats and Lowe often did stuff like that back in the day (not necessarily with buyouts though).

"Better hockey player" Agreed.

But brown brings what he has and Eager generally doesn't. But Eager is the more talented player of the two. Pretty sure thats what is meant.

I thought Eager was doing pretty well. But with Brown here, he hits more, fights more, scores more... So no need for Eager anymore.

Befuddled that he couldn't at least return a pick.

Brown is better at accepting his role and hitting and fighting but Eager is without question more skilled at the game of hockey.

The only way Eager is scoring even close to 20 goals is if you play him in the top-6 all year and on the PP. And he would be giving up 5 times as many goals as he scores.

He is without question a better goal scorer than Brown but that's not what we're looking for in that roster spot. We need toughness.

Nick Johnson is on waivers as well.

The guy is a non-stop fore-checking king, has size and is able to cycle the puck really well.

If you remember our game VS. PHX, he was a force.

Based on his career rates he would need to play 1,600 minutes in a season.

So, Eager counts against cap in the AHL now under the new CBA, right? Is it 1.1m, or is it less?

Players count against the cap if they clear waivers now?

I thought they did. Is it the cap hit minus the minimum NHL salary? Let me search a bit.

I could agree with this, but for what Eager was brought in to do Brown is doing it better.

IMO we need another player like Eager for our 4th line so I'm not too big on this move, but I get the feeling that there may have been something behind the scenes that made this happen. I'd sooner call up Hordichuk and play him on the 4th line when needed than Petrell TBH. Those 2 can alternate depending on who we play.

http://www.blueseatblogs.com/2012/10...d-wade-redden/

The clause states that those players making over $105,000 in the AHL — on NHL contracts, as in they signed with the NHL club — will have the difference count against the NHL salary cap. For those keeping score, that means that of Wade Redden’s $6.5 million cap hit, $6.4 million will count against the NHL cap.

Was this implemented in the CBA?

I think you can bury 900,000 in the minors and the rest counts against the cap. Redden would've counted for 5.6 and his cap hit is 6.5. So i believe Eager would count at 200,000 even if he plays in the minors.

I think there's something else behind this move. They had to create a roster spot for someone, but I also don't know why Peckham (or Potter for that matter but he's a servicable #7) are on this team.

they have too many forwards IMO. Armstrong is already a healthy scratch for them.

I think so too, would've made more sense to move a defenseman down or Hartikainen. Somethings up.

I found it now:

http://www.capgeek.com/new-cba/

BURIED CONTRACTS (Wade Redden Rule)

Money paid to players outside of the NHL counts against the cap.

A one-way contract counts against the cap as follows:

cap hit [ minimum salary + $375,000 ]Example: If Wade Redden plays in the minors in 2012-13, he counts as follows.

$6.5M [ $525,000 + $375,000 ] = $5.6MA two-way contract counts as follows:

minor-league salary [ minimum salary + $375,000 ]Example: Player As two-way contract pays $3M/$1M in 2012-13 and counts as follows in the minors.

$1M [ $525,000 + $375,000 ] = $100,000

The play of Magnus. It seems that the Oil are actually going to try and ice their best players.

It's better that he gets moved if he's not going to get played.

I think this. If its waive eager or bury magnus ill waive eager. Least with magnus we have 3 decent lines for once (4 if you count brown - belanger - petrel/jones/hartikanen).

forgot smyth, but still one person had to go. Smyth may be less effective, but 3 concussions for eager is a lot. furthermore i think as a franchise we owe smyth the opportunity to play out his career in EDM. If we chase out people who want to play in EDM we can't complain when people don't want to play in EDM. Just my thoughts.

It's really too bad Smyth is hogging a spot he doesn't deserve here.
