I would do a deal around Klefbom + prospect (B to B-) level for Gardiner.

Short selling Gardiner and Overvaluing the bomb, sue me. I have high hopes for Klefbom and his style in EXACTLY what the oilers need in a prospect. Tough, two-way and good defensively. A Brent Seabrook mold.

Gardiner is a great PMD, but he is suspect defensively as is J.Schultz. They were good defensively for rookies and for offensive defenseman. But still need a guy who you can rely on for defensive skills. Need a skillset like Klefbom more than Gardiners for this team. *Gardiner is better and more proven thus far

Its like asking would you rather have Letang or Seabrook.

My thoughts are that if the Kings are willing to move Stoll we better give them a call. He's the exact player we need.

He is a good player, but its a pretty heavy price tag on our centers if we bring him in.

RNH (3.775)
Gagner (3.2, going up this summer, probably a lot with his production)
Stoll (3.25)
Horcoff (5.5 million)

That's 15.775 million on centers, withough considering Gagner will go up probably 2 million more for next year. I like Stoll, but unless we buy out Horcoff, we can't really afford to bring in Stoll.

If the cap wasn't dropping this summer I would agree. I'd love to have RNH/Gags/Horc/Stoll down the middle. But given the cost of our wingers, I am not sure we can do it.

Although I guess if we could move Belanger for a pick, swapping Stoll for him and Eager only leaves us spending 1.4M more than we currently are... Maybe it could work.

serious underrating of gardiner in this thread.

no nick schultz+2nd (or equiv prospect) will not get you him:

1. theyd only move him because of their excess of dmen, getting another one, who makes actual money, wouldn't make sense.

2. the value is terrible anyway.

PS: we shouldn't be shopping NS anyway, even if he isnt a top-4 dman, hes easily a 5, maybe overpaid, but the contract runs out soon enough to not care.

i think our 1st would be a solid offer.

pls dont tell me how our 1st is better than gardiner, this is only true if we finish bottom 4. if we acquired gardiner now, we should manage to avoid this. (hopefully we avoid it under all circumstances anyway)

we also get +5 years of development on a pick that wouldn't be ready to make the team for at least 1 year, and make an impact for at least 2.

then theres the JS connection as a bonus (BONUS NOT CORE REASON TO MAKE THE TRADE)

BONUS!

Gotta agree with Koto in that you need to give up a first to get a significant player.

Lots of people falling for the Toronto media hype of Gardiner.

He's a soft puckmoving defenseman without top-end offensive skills.

He's nothing special.

I think he's a little bit better than Gilbert.... But we all know Gilbert's equal to Nick Schultz straight on.

He scored 23 ES points last year which was good enough for 22nd in the league.

He would be a very nice pick-up but I can't see the Leafs having much interest in adding Hemsky. They really don't need any wingers right now.

1 Justin Schultz EDM D 26 5 10 15
2 Ryan Whitney EDM D 19 3 5 8
3 Jeff Petry EDM D 26 3 2 5
4 Nick Schultz EDM D 26 0 3 3
5 Ladislav Smid EDM D 26 0 2 2
6 Mark Fistric EDM D 13 0 2 2
7 Corey Potter EDM D 16 0 0 0
8 Theo Peckham EDM D 4 0 0 0

I think we could use a bit more puck moving from the back end. Especially if Whitney is leaving.

I don't think there is a debate about if we could use him, it's more about his value.

LA has played real well as of late, moving multiple roster players could end up biting them in the butt.

any chance we could get Glenncross back in the fold? Calgary may want to shed some money at the deadline?

2 more years at 2.55 with a NMC. I'm sure he would waive to come here...

Couldn't disagree more. He has excellent offensive skills. He's an outstanding skater, excellent passer and has a very good shot. I would agree that he's a bit softish but he has tons of offensive skills.

What, the Flames are just one guy away from making a run.

Hey, does anyone know if Jovanovski has anything left? I know he's been hurt, and he's older, but he's always skated well and played a very physical game, he could add some veteran presence and leadership to a blueline that needs it.

I know he has 2 years left, but that's not too much and it's only just over $4M

A few points ahead of Andrew Ference, Matt Gilroy and Jeff Petry.

Like I said, nothing special.

He's an injury prone, bottom pairing d-man.

So we can use him, but were not willing to give anything up that they can use?

We could use any puckmover at this point.

Personally I'd go after one that's proven, isn't soft and doesn't have a concussion history if we're going to be talking about assets like Hemsky or a 1st round pick.

Yeah but he did it as a rookie. He's also 2 years younger than Petry.
You can see by the eye test that Gardiner has some pretty special offensive gifts.

Meh, I don't see it.

He looks like Duncan Keith offensively to me. Almost lost when they're in the offensive zone unless it's off the rush.

And looking like Duncan Keith offensively is a bad thing?

I actually think he will be back. Who else are we going to be able to get to replace him with? Tambo has shown he is not big on big trades, and I doubt a top 4 D will want to sign here for a reasonable price. Plus, we should be able to get him on a 1 year deal for less than his current cap hit. That should give Klefbom more time to develop as well. He is less than perfect, but to let him walk/trade him away and count on Potter to be in the lineup every game would be brutal.
