Think about it this way, would you trade Erixon, Dubi and Anisimov for a chance at a game breaker like Nash? The answer is yes, whether Erixon and Anisimov are good/cheap or not.
Gabby is seen as a game breaker, consistent 40 goal scorer that can be deadly in the right system. Ottawa's system would seem to fit him.
Gabby would have 1+ years to play there. If he is allowed to play his style with a center that can feed him the puck and thrives, with a PMD like KArlsson behind him, there is no reason why he would not resign.
It would feel like heaven compared to the Torts gulag
What are you talking about? Spezza is 29. Ottawa is building for the future, we're not a contender. Alfie is 40 and not part of the long term plans. Ottawa fans are resigned to the fact he probably will not win a cup here.

Trading away young blue chip prospects who will be part of the team for the next decade for a 31 year old with one more season on his contract makes zero sense.

If the Predators somehow offered Hornqvist, Ellis, and a first I don't see how the Rangers could turn it down. Get a top four potential offensive dman that plays the right side, but I believe Hornqvist plays the RW as well so the Rangers would be in the same spot as they are now. Adding the first this year helps to keep talent in the pipe.

That does not describe Ryan Ellis.

Well, the question becomes: Does Gabs want to go to Nashville?

I could see the Flames doing something big. Do the Rangers want Tanguay for 3 more yrs at 3.5? .........I like Glencross as a guy that can provide scoring in the bottom 6 and can play some top 6 still too.

Babchuk as a rental may not be bad. If they were willing to give up picks for O'Reilley maybe they do the same for Gaborik too

hypothetically

Tanguay, Richards, Nash
Hagelin, Stepan, Callahan
Glencross, Boyle, Pyatt
Powe, Halpern, Asham
Haley

I'd consider trading Gaborik if the Rangers are clearly out of it, the price being paid was obscene, opens up cap space, replace scoring, and fill roles.

If its Hornqvist, Ellis, Wilson + for Gaborik and pieces... then I pull the trigger on the deal. It has to be 4 pieces, with 3 NHL players to make it worth considering. Otherwise you can't replace what he brings to the lineup, even though he's been playing poorly.

Its an interesting dilemma, you all know he's going to be firing full force in a walk year, so the price has to be high.

that is a nice package. IF the can get those 3 plus a pick for Gaborik and spare parts like Gilroy, Bickel then it's temping.

BTW do the Preds still have the rights to Radulov? They must .............that would be a nice piece for next yr

well most outsiders think they should blow it up yet they go out and sing O'Reilly which would of lost a 1st and 3rd. That's not what a rebuilding team should do

so they may go balzy and trade for a big name even though most think they should blow it up and receive prospects, picks

Richards get another year.. big decisions after 14' not only with him but we have to sign almost everyone due to contracts expiring...

we trade gabs by this years deadline or draft.. i think we could go after perry

would be at least 7yrs 56 mill.. 8m AAV, i dont like it though.. rather wait till 14' see what happens with Malkin and a few others..

I fail to see how you think O'Reilly and Gaborik are at all comparable.

O'Reilly is 22, makes less than Gaborik and is still controllable at the end of his contract. All attractive things to a team that is rebuilding (being last in the West).

Gaborik is 31, makes 2.5M more than O'Reilly, and is a UFA at the end of of next season. Why would the Flames want that?

I wouldn't mind the Calgary Flames becoming a relevant franchise again. I'm sure they're management wouldn't either.

Honestly, the last ten years, you could forget they exist for month long periods.

I'd do Tanguay+Iginla for gabby . Age and contracts considered I think it would be good

Trading away young blue chip prospects who will be part of the team for the next decade for a 31 year old with one more season on his contract makes zero sense.
1 - As I said earlier, this is based on the discussions on the trade boards.
2 - Alfie is retiring this season or ext season at most.
3 - Spezza will be 30 in June.
4 - By the time Spezza retires, these kids would have just reached their prime age and who knows if they would be any closer to the cup than they are now with a healthy Senator's team plus Gaborik. It is not certain that they will develop as you think they will.
5 - It's not like you are giving away the store, you still have Karlsson, Silfverberg , Stone, Ceci coming up ... Sens have drafted well. But that is your org's call not mine.
6 - The debate about going for it or being patient with the kids is ongoing on many boards, including this one. So I understand your position, but there are others on the Sens boards that feel otherwise. It is a completely valid argument both ways.
Just as an example, here is a snipet of what the Wings fans are discussing re Gaborik, and it was started about including Calle Jarnkrok in the trade.

Note to Mods: I don't know whether it's allowed to copy and paste quotes from other boards. I removed names just in case.

Quote:
Datsyuk is 34, Franzen is 33, Zetterberg and Kronwall are 32, our window to win again will be closed to this core group in a matter of 3 seasons.

Trading some kids and a prospect for a player who would instantly rejuvenate our team offensively, possibly keep Datsyuk in town for an extension, and most of all allows us to contend for the cup once again would be worth everything.

And to say that Jarnkrok is safe from a trade with ANYONE is just madness.

Quote:
So we keep on moving forward with an aging core, add another expensive contract, one that has to be resigned next offseason? We shouldn't trade anyone unless it helps us now AND in the future.

The Wings window to win was 07-11, we won once made it to the finals twice, made it to the conference finals in 07 and if it wasn't for some bounces would have made it to the Conference finals in 10 & 11.

In order to win Cups in the Salary cup era you have to have either a) Star players on ELCs b) Star players on bridge contracts c) You have a goalie get hot and have super depth/top 5 dman or d) good young players on ELCs to plug the holes around your stars. Right now we have FAR to much dead weight on this team to think about making a move for that "missing piece", we have more pressing issues than a goal scoring winger (Gaborik is one of the best though).

Our current core right now is:

Datsyuk: 34 going on 35, signed for 1 more year
Zetterberg: 32 going on 33, signed forever
Brunner: Just turned 27, FA this year
Franzen: 33, signed forever
Kronwall: 32, signed till 38
Ericsson: 29, signed for 1 more year
Smith: 24, RFA this year
Helm: 26, signed for 3 more years

Right now we are in no state to trade away any player that could be a 65-80 point center for the next decade, that goes for any of our top prospects. Unless we're trading them for a young high upside dman (how many of those are on the block?) we shouldn't move any of them until the time is right.

There will be some lean years as we once again try to pass the torch from one set of stars to hopefully another set. What we shouldn't do is trade away our only shot at keeping our future from looking like the Maple Leafs of old, or the current Flames, just to go for a feeble attempt to give it one last shot when we aren't close to being contenders. The only chance we have of going anywhere is if Datysuk goes into Phoenix playoff mode the whole run, Zetterberg is his typical self and Howard plays like Quick.

Also what happens if Datsyuk goes back home anyways, and Gaborik signs with another team? Now we are most definitely rebuilding and we traded away 3 top prospects for 1 1/2 years of pointlessness.

IMO that would be pushing it.
Katie Strang said the price for Gaborik IF he is traded would be a young roster player, top prospect and first.

I really wish Sather could pull some magic and get this team a legit 2nd line LW and a 3C.. that would go a long way into helping this club IMO

Hagelin-Stepan-Nash
LW- Richards- Gaborik (put him on his right side for **** sakes)
Miller-3C-Callahan
Pyatt-Halpern-Boyle

Detroit makes the most sense. They have pieces that should interest the Rangers, skilled forwards. Tatar. Nyquist. Jarnkrok. Sheahan. Pulkinon. Ferraro. Abdelkader.

They have an aging core and have no wingers to play with Datsyuk who thrives with the puck.

Cheapest options:
LW: Glencross from the Flames
3C: Marcel Goc from the Panthers

Incidentally, the Rangers reportedly had interest in Weiss before he got injured.

I still see Stoll being a target at 3c.

I wouldn't be surprised if Clowe was a target as well.
