Screw stats, this one isn't even close. Regehr 10 times out of 10.

If it was Richie Regehr you might have a case....but even then, i'd probably take a Regehr.

Here are the stats:

------------GP-----POINTS----GOALS----ASSISTS----(+/-)
Staios -----313------92---------24----------68-------(+40)
Regehr -----303------54---------12----------54-------(-13)

Staios has the statistical advantage. Is he the better defenceman?
This is a joke right?

Well, I guess if it really means that much to you, you can find it somewhere here:

http://forum.calgarypuck.com/showthread.php?t=28412

Along with mudcrutch's 'math is a lost art' comment. After taking some 8 math coarses in university, I can tell the guy's full if crap.

I personally don't find the need to justify myself to you, but if you're so intent on it, be my guest.

Here you go:
http://oilfans.com/forum/index.php?t...ac478bb601247e

"Here are Brodeur's ESSV% since 1998-99.

Not once has he managed to match the .930 that Conklin put up last year."

To be fair, it seems basically all the other posters are calling him on it. (Haven't read the whole thread yet.

So you enjoy arguing with clueless 12 year old trolls on another board and decided to share it with us here?

Seriously, whats the point of this thread? A lame attempt to say "hey, look how dumb an Oiler fan is". Did you think this would garner interesting discussion?

Thanks, RecklessCaution

Leia: "There are better netminders out there! Brodeur for one is better than Conklin. In terms of availabilty I'm not 100% sure though. "

mudcrutch: "What makes you think Brodeur is better Leia?"

mucrutch: "Let's phrase this properly. He's been on teams that have been through a playoff series. Whether he took them through one is a separate issue. Cujo has taken a team through a playoff series before-the consensus here seemed to be that we wanted no part of him because he isn't that good. I'm a bit mystified as to why you're willing to attribute the success of the team to the goalie. The goalie plays a role in terms of stopping shots-that's it. The rest of what needs to be provided-shot prevention and goals comes from the rest of the team. Not once has he managed to match the .930 that Conklin put up last year. Conklin had an abysmal PKSV% last year that looks unlikely to repeat IMO. There's obviously increased risk with Conklin because of the unknowns, but I think that they match up pretty well. The real point is the difference in salary. Let's say that the following things occur next year. It costs an extra $4.2MM for Brodeur, who may well not prevent any extra goals for that money. How could you possibly prefer Brodeur to Conklin?"

mudcrutch: "Brodeur doesn't put up incredible numbers. Hasn't since the late 90's. Why he's still the number one goalie on Team Canada is beyond me. He's the perfect example for those of who think that save percentage is what matters too, because nobody wants to make the argument that NJ gives up more high quality chances than a team like FLA. If NJ doesn't give up more high quality chances than FLA, than Luongo is better than Brodeur. If they don't give up more high quality chances than EDM, than Conklin is likely better than Brodeur. As I noted in my initial post, the difference with Conklin is that he hasn't faced enough shots to have an established level of play. Fair enough. Martin Brodeur is not one of the top two or three goalies on the planet. There's just no justifying that statement."

mudcrutch: "I asked this above, but what evidence is there that Brodeur is better than Conklin?"

mudcrutch: "I'm a bit confused about what you mean by 2X. I have to say though that I'd quite comfortably bet Conklin to be no worse than .005 below Brodeur's SV% this year. Factor in the money and it's a no-brainer. I'm not conceding that Conklin is worse-there's always randomness-but I'd expect him to be better. "

mudcrutch (showing his maturity): "Now, I don't want to be seen as making fun of the mentally challenged... "

Jules23: "If NJ offered Brodeur for 2nd rounder, would Edmonton accept, or would they keep Conklin" (paraphrase)
mudcrutch's reply: "I would have taken that deal if I was Jersey in a heartbeat. If I was Edmonton I wouldn't have."

mudcrutch's famous line: "I know that math is considered to be something of a dark art around here, something akin to sacrificing virgins under the full moon."

Just becuase you wanted it, Lowetide. In fairness to Oiler fans, they thought mucrutch was a dolt, so its not all Oiler fans that think Conklin was better then Brodeur, just mudcrutch.

Any comments?

Find it yourself. He says it somewhere about leading the league in ESSV (or something like that).

Though this thread should never have been posted (why do people feel the need to bring arguments that are a waste of space and time to other places here?), I do find this mudcrutch guy wildly entertaining.

Still, close this thread now please.

Serious indeed. The thread was a joke but it has a point for many of the people out there.

Staios has unquestionably better stats but Regehr is unquestionably the better defenceman. Alot of posters could learn a couple things from this comparison.

But yes, sorry for ruining everyone's day for posting a useless thread on hfboards. I'm sorry that this was the first time it's ever happened.

Oh wait, this entire forum is filled with useless threads.

Funny thing is how this useless thread produced some interesting banter.

Interesting tangents arise when theres no hockey-related news to talk about.

Is it me or has Phanuthier become increasingly snide since the Oilers made it to the SCF. I mean, look at the guys avatar. It was probably the happiest day of his life when they lost.

Try again.

Jules23: If I was CGY's GM I'd offer Kipper,Leopold,Pelech and a 3rd rounder for Brodeur and chances are NJ would decline, for Conklin I'd offer a 2nd rounder and EDM would say thanks, because all this Conklin talk is useless because IMO Maarkanen is the better goalie anyways!
mudcrutch79: I would have taken that deal if I was Jersey in a heartbeat. If I was Edmonton I wouldn't have. There are other factors at play though, like dollars.
