Phoenix is the only team in the Pacific closer than Winnipeg is; maybe thats what he meant to say?

Division D
- Carolina

- Washington

Don't see Markham/Hamilton getting a team before these 3 cities. Doubt it'd matter enough to keep Columbus in the East, especially when their replacement is a Canadian team. Just something I'd be interested in seeing.
Don't even know why I'm so hell-bent on a team coming to Houston. I won't even be here by the time this could roll around.

A Dallas/Houston rivalry would be epic though. Definitely something this franchise is extremely lacking.

It's quite obviously from the way they were promoting it during the game vs the Preds on Tuesday that they're going to be big time pushing the rivalry against Nashville in the next couple of years.

I think they could just move Phoenix to Seattle and that would change absolutely nothing division-wise. Give QC an expansion team and ??? an expansion team. On a business level I think QC would be much more tolerant to having a crappy expansion team than Seattle would. Phoenix is ready to go as a playoff/borderline playoff team and would really help the Seattle market settle in as a hockey city.

Houston does seem like a logical spot for the 2nd expansion team, but I have no idea about the area's viability to be a hockey market, especially since there is some competition out there. Would Aeros fans easily make the jump to an NHL team? How would they deal with the baseball, football, and basketball teams? Are there a lot of Dallas Stars fans sitting around in Houston that would adopt a new team? I think it's a risky market, even if it is a big one.

Yes. The only team that really has any major pull is the Texans. The rest are bandwagon teams, so all we'd really need to do is be competitive and we'd be fine. The Aeros have a strong, loyal fanbase of about 3000-4000, and they typically pull 5000-6000 per game. We got up to 12000-13000 in the CCF, and the numbers were a steady 8-9K all throughout that playoff series.

Again, they're bandwagon teams. Only the Texans' will have a huge fanbase if they're not doing well. Pretty similar to Dallas, actually.

Not really. I know like, 2 or 3 people at most that'd consider themselves Stars' fans. I doubt there's much of a fanbase for hockey outside of the Aeros here at all. Quite a few play, but there aren't many fans around.

If California and Florida can have multiple teams Texas should as well. Houston makes too much sense not to get a team before too long. Would be nice to have an in-state rivalry.

Quebec, 2nd Toronto area, and Seattle make more sense even if divisions have to be realigned yet again.

Toronto isn't getting a 2nd team any time soon.

It's unlikely, but not impossible.

Good to see that this worked out for the Stars in the end. Hopefully it means that Gaglardi and Lites have a voice that's being heard around the league. It really is all about time zones and keeping more games within the Central time zone ought to help both the team and the fans.

One in Seattle, one in Houston... Evens up all the divisions at 8.

I think you'd see the same thing that has happened in PHO with Houston. I've played a lot of hockey there, and most of the people are very flakey. They tend to be fans of teams from all over the league and not Dallas. On top of that traffic is a nightmare everywhere so being able to be good enough to prove the worthiness of a packed house could be very difficult.

Me too.

Side note, put me on the side of not wanting a NHL team in Houston.

Did they announce how the schedule would work out next year in regards to how many times we play each team? I know I heard you get a home and home with every team, but do you play the other West division more than that?

I dont think so. The 7 team divisions won't play the same schedule as the 8 team ones do because of the math, but I don't remember if that means an extra division game or an extra with the other division in the West.

Eastern Teams: Home and Home
Western Teams: 3 games
Divisional Games: 5 games against 5 teams, 4 games against 1.

That can't be right. With 7 teams in a division, you can't only play 1 team 4 times.
DAL v NSH 4 times
STL v CHI 4 times
MIN v WPG 4 times
COL v no one

• Here’s the scheduling matrix for realignment, via the NHL:

Western Conference (7-Team Divisions)

Within Conference (Division): 29 games
* 5 games vs. five teams (3 Home/2 Away vs. two teams, 2 Home/3 Away vs.
three teams) AND 4 games vs. one team (2 Home/2 Away). Teams rotated on a
yearly basis.
* 5 X 5 =25 games
* 1 X 4 = 4 games

Within Conference (Non-Division): 21 games
* 3 games vs. each team (2 Home/1 Away vs. four teams, 1 Home/2 Away vs.
three teams). Teams rotated on a yearly basis.
* 3 X 7 = 21 games

Non-Conference: 32 games
* 2 games vs. each team (1 Home/1 Away)
* 2 X 16 = 32 games

(Exception: one team from each division plays one less game inside Division
and one more game inside Conference outside Division)
