How Much Would You Pay For A #1 Defenseman?

I've seen a lot of posters coming up with their own lineups for next year and a fairly common thread throughout them all seems to be throwing roughly 8M to 8.5M @ Corey Perry.

I think most of us view Perry as a luxury, seeing as how we already have some really good offensive forwards on this team, while a #1 defenseman is almost universally seen as one of the biggest needs on this team.

So my question is, if there was a #1 defenseman available this year view unrestricted free agency, what kind of cap hit would you be willing to tolerate for him? I'm talking for a guy like Pietrangelo, OEL, etc.

More than I would pay for Perry.

Depending on who we draft this year if we get a top 5 pick. I wouldn't be totally against giving up Couturier for Gardiner+.

Max contract at max length. I don't care that it would strap down our depth, depth means nothing if you don't have the quality guy to pull it all together. We already have a #1 C a young #1 D like the guys you mentioned makes us insta contendors

Just out of curiosity to those who would be willing to deal Couturier, did you think that this summer with the Weber deal? I remember a lot of people not wanting to give up Couturier (or Schenn) for Weber.

If it was just Couturier/Schenn+ I would have. But if it was both of them+ I wouldn't have.

This was supposed to be a $$$$ thread versus a trade thread but I guess it's interesting to see what people would trade too.

There is no #1 D out there to sign this year, is there?

Some interesting RFAs, but I suspect they'll all be locked down before we get to offer sheet them.

What's the length limit with the CBA? Anyway, I'd do $9m per for Pietrangelo if we could get a long term deal, probably around there for OEL too.

As far as trading, I'd be willing to move Couturier plus some combination of Simmonds, Coburn, Laughton/Cousins and/or picks. Maybe Voracek if the deal is right. Hate to see Couts, Voracek, Simmonds or our first (depending on draft position) go, but for someone like Pietrangelo or OEL you have to make that trade. Hear a lot of people asking for the Schenn brothers, but I think they should be untouchable unless it's straight up Schenns for one of those two.

$7.0m/year is the max I'd like to go for a #1D.

I'd go up to $8.0m/year in a moment of desperation for a true #1.

I would go 7 years $49M-$56M. Anything more than $8M/yr would be tough to swallow, especially since the Flyers are always up against the cap.

7 years is max for UFA; 8 years is max if you are resigning your own player prior to start of FA.

Give up Coots, Voracek, or Schenn easily. #1 D are so much rarer.

tree fiddy

teams don't tend to trade these, it would take such an over payment it would just create gaping holes elsewhere, going to have to just draft our own
