Kaberle and Ballard

What about a trade with Kaberle and Ballard as the main pieces ?

Similar cap hits, Ballard contract expire summer 2015 while Kaberle expire summer 2014.

Why? What the hell does this achieve?

I would prefer Ballard staying if thats the deal in place. Players coming out from the East to the West especially Vancouver take some time to learn the system. So it would be a set back for us to bother with this deal when we could potentially unload him at the end of the season.

No. Montreal doesn't want the extra year on Ballard's contract.

if Montreal indeed plan to buyout Kaberle...

So logically you would never claim Ballard if he was on waiver?

I'd make the trade in the summer as a Hab fan, I'd prefer it to buying out Kaberle. Providing, of course, we don't get someone else to play LD in the meantime or if Tinordi is ready (let's hope) and then use the buyout on Gonta.

Buy out Gionta?

Were going to buy out a guy that would be on pace for 27 goals in an 82 game season.

The guy who coming into this season scored 77 goals in 200 games as a Hab (playoffs included) which is an average about 31 goals a year.

and your suggestion to buy him out?

Not a chance at that contract. Kantberle is done after next year which frees up dollars for Subban's next contract and a roster spot for Tinordi, Beaulieu or Pateryn.

Why trade for or pick up an overpaid Ballard? Our own guy comes off the books first. Why help another team and screw up our cap situation?

Now hold on a second. I would consider this deal from a Habs perspective, provided Vancouver adds anoter piece (an incentive) to take another year of Ballard's contract. It's simple:

Maybe Ballard + Nicklas Jensen/Brendan Gaunce/Frank Corrado or even Zack Kassian for Kaberle.

Now that should be enough to make Montreal do the deal. In the summer, we were going to buy out Kaberle, so instead, we just buy out Ballard, and we got a free prospect from the deal. Vancouver can do whatever they want with Kaberle.

Either way, Montreal loses the cap, and gets a prospect as well.

If you think Kaberle is enough to get you Kassian or a first rounder in Gaunce then I've got a bridge to sell you for cheap.
