When the only way a trade "works" is if you're able to sign a 36 year old player to a multi-year contract, I'd say its not worth pursuing in the first place.

I wonder if we can trade for the great Zack Kassian. 2 assists in his last 18 games. Where'd all the people hyping him go?

you're not looking at the player then. Iginla will play in the NHL into his 40s, providing offense, grit, fighting ability, and leadership.
I would want a bottom 6 and defense man from Calgary as well in this deal, depending on who/what we're sending their way.

I'm not saying we couldn't find a better deal than the above, we could and should, but this is still a much better option than you think it is, because of the caliber of player that Iginla is.

MZA would be a good addition to the 2nd/3rd line and the PP. The guy can definitely create which is something this team clearly doesn't have enough of.

Boyle - Kills offense

Miller - Young, needs more time

Pyatt and Halpern have been the (2) consistent players and neither of them have been all that great, just passable at this point.
I agree on all points .
PK specialists ala Powe / HALPERN are a nice asset if you get production from your 3 rd line . The NYR 3 rd line is an offensive quagmire . Combine inconsistent offense from Richards / Gaborik secondary scoring only coming from Callahan ( Hags as come back to Earth ) and MDZ having another down year in his young up n down career is why NYR are a bubble team . When Nash doesn't score or dominate we lose .
PYatt
Boyle
Miller ( he's a kid )
Kreider ( kid struggling ) were all counted on to chip in and haven't .
Not sure what the solution is .
I've been a Gaborik fan but maybe a change of scenery would do all parties well

Our bottom six is rough..

Powe-Halpern-Haley/Astham are fine IMO, 4th lines aren't suppose to score/provide offense..

we need tougher players in bottom six.. Boyle IMO is fine 3rd lines are shut down lines and are defense first and provide offense here and there but main goal is to keep the puck down low and grind games out.. Boyle works hard and more then a lot of guys on the team.. he really does try his ass off every night, I dont understand the criticism every night.., I dont however like Pyatt the guy is way to slow, weak shot and doesn't fit this team..

This team misses dubi and AA and Prust.. I think haley can be groomed into prust but will take time not much tho bc he gets it..

bc they knew their roles and did the little things right.. everyone gave dubi and aa **** all the time for not scoring etc.. but they knew what they had to do.. they dictated the play of the game, by their physical play, board work, standing up for teammates (dubi/prust) and had the determination to get it done.. you see anyone on this team that fits that mold? thats why torts refers to "jam" look at boston they are the deepest toughest team in the league and havent changed over their roster in 3-4yrs, thats why they have the success they have.. in order to win you have to keep the same team together for awhile.. we messed up by not signing prust/feds/mitchell, should have kept this team together or at least the bottom 6 would've kept us more in tacked after the nash deal.. not bc they have more talent then the players we had but bc they knew their assignments and excelled at it...

does anyone know what we even offered prust before he signed with MTL??

Correct me if I'm wrong, which I may certainly be, but in that scenario, wouldn't TB be responsible for the cap benefit obtained while he was with them, while we're only responsible for the benefit while he was with us? So of the 17 million total benefit 5.33 of it is applied to TB while we're responsible for 10.66 of it.

If Richards and Gaborik were producing in even the slightest way they can nobody would be lamenting the loss of Anisimov, Dubinsky and Prust.

I would LOVE him on this team. Blows my mind that no one has given Kyle Beach a shot on a 4th line somewhere.

Iginla is already slowing down. You want him around into his 40's?

Still no. He was 4th on the team in points with 46 that year and two of the guys tied for third above him had 47 points. He was 21. Columbus not having the patience to properly develop a young player is not new and does not negate the fact that he was putting up top six numbers and was (one point shy) of being tied for third on his team in scoring. Voracek was never a third liner. If he played on Philly's third for a brief while it was due to depth and a "getting to know you" period. He's been a top six winger basically since his rookie year.

Iginla is still a 30g scorer and will be for next 3-4 years. He's a specimen. besides, by the time his contract his up, all our great young players will be ready enter out top six.

Iginla will provide what is needed by a team that is supposed to be competing NOW. You're advocating philly 2 steps back moves...

I was just thinking of him, actually. He's still a young guy and I wonder how much of a chance he gets on that team. I was thinking Raymond, Kassian and 1st for Gabby, but then I looked at their cap situation, and I don't see any way we can make it work. Vancouver is in trouble.

Calgary is 5 points out of a playoff spot with 2 games in hand. As long as they are that close, Igninla isn't going anywhere.

Beach is a guy I would take a flier on for sure. Well, I guess pending more info. Haven't seen him play in a long time.

Would add some much needed edge. Obviously Kassian too but he'd cost a lot more. Those are the type of player Id like to see targeted for the bottom 6.

No. That would probably make more sense, but the team that signed him to the contract is on the hook for the full penalty.

I think it's a foregone conclusion that we'll use our amnesty buyout on Richards in 2014. Even if we were to keep him, I can't see him playing out the end of his contract. So either way we'd get a cap penalty. No way Sather is going to risk that for an aging player.

If Gaborik were to be traded, who would be a good suitor and what would we expect back?

Canucks? Burrows + Picks/Specs?

Richards has done nothing to prove he could be a productive player for the length of his contract. In fact it may make more sense to buy him out this summer, instead of the possibility of him struggle here in NY next season as well. very disappointed in BR.

very true.. noone can argue that... i just dont see any killer instinct in this team from those bottom guys.. its sad... and your right those guys are here to do work and just arent cutting it.. gab prob needs change of scenery.. and richards needs to step up or buy out coming in 14'..

we need to try and get pavelski, clowe..those guys would fit this team... if i am slats
gabs is 31 17 points
pavs is 28 17/18 points

both have a year left on contract and prob will leave organizations via FA

and clowe is FA after this year and isn't cutting it in SJ and could be a good rental

both add toughness, depth and versatility..

I dont think Pyatt is fitting the bill in bottom six- is slow and doesnt add the toughness Clowe can..

I would trade Gaborik, Pyatt, Prospect (St Croix/Jean) and a pick (4th/5th will do 3rd if necessary) for Pavs, Clowe and 3rd..

try to sign MZA or if kreider continues to play good in CT call him up..

Hags-Richards-Nash
Kreider/MZA-Stepan-Pavs
Clowe-Miller-Callahan
Powe-Boyle-Haley/Asham

Scoring/Toughness/depth

Yeah, I don't think Kassian is available. It was just a dig at the people who were complaining we didn't throw the sun and stars at Buffalo to get him. Sorry!

They were down on him. Voracek was a 3rd liner last year in Philly

The people around Calgary say he has already lost a step. He is 36. Not even that close to 40.

I think Sather will give him a chance to bounce back. And we can afford to keep him 1 more year. Then again, what if he gets hurt? Do we risk not being able to buy him out? It should be interesting. It's very possible that our 2 biggest FA acquisitions in the last 4 years will be gone by July.

Richards still has 36 mil left on his contract. That's 24 mil if we buy him out this offseason. Even Dolan might hesitate on that one.

agreed. that's why his "i guess they don't want me in ny" tweet ticked alot of people off. He wanted overpayment to stay here, yet this was his "home"?
