Should the Oilers Trade their 1st Round Pick in 2013?

***PLEASE DON'T MAKE THIS A FLAME WAR***

This is for purely speculative purposes. If the season ended today and the Oilers had a top-5 pick in the coming draft, would you trade the pick? If so what would be the asset/player you would try and target?

Tambellini and his staff have repeatedly stated that they have faith in the group that they have drafted and would like them to continue to grow together. The idea would be that trading the high 1st round pick would send a signal to the troops that the rebuild is over and that it is time to start competing. Trading the pick could yeild a top asset in their prime from a team entering a rebuild phase who could try to rally the youngsters.

OR

Would you take the best player available in the draft and continue on the line Edmonton has been the past few years?

Either draft a dman or trade for established dman who will be around for years

If they're not getting either a Top 2 defenseman or a Top 6 Center with size (or at least grit and a two way game) the and face off ability, they need to just use the pick.

No.
The team is awful. They should continue to draft high until they balance out the roster with something more than flash n dash.

Nope, but 2014 1st is available along with whoever is outside of the big5+2013 1st(I'm guessing Sean Monahan)
Should bring us a very good return.

Depends on where they are in the standing come April. Right now they're still very much in the mix for the 8th spot and are on a bit of a hot run atm. Trading it just to make a statement doesn't guarantee a boost in the team's play. (Ex. Toronto in 09-10)

With this draft being better, I would still take the best player available or trade up using at least one of the 2 2nd's the Oilers have.

I don`t think its a yes or no answer, it all depends on what sort of value it has on draft day, in my opinion. If we can get a package that includes a number one defenseman (or a one for one for the right defenseman), then yes, do it. If the offers are all for later picks and prospects, keep it and use it. The team would be best off to get help now I think, but it really depends on what sort of players are made available for the pick.

depends entirely who is offered for that pick.. I don't see a reason to trade that pick just for the sake of trading. If it's for a young, legit top pairing D, sure work around it. If not, just keep the pick.

If they cant be so bad as to draft Jones, they should trade the pick and one of their other overall failures and get some established quantity with it.

But this team is hot garbage. They will have one of the top two picks.

For that reason, I expect the payment to move up (especially within the top 10) would be huge and not likely worth it. Plenty of talent to go around.

Personally I think they'd be better off if they could find something like the package Columbus got for Nash.

Tank again. Pick Seth first overall. Rinse and repeat.

Absolutely not. Most of the pieces are in place...be patient and keep building through the draft, and bolster the roster in UFA.

If its a top 6-10 pick and you can trade it to add a 25 year old top pairing D that is under contract for 3-4 more years, trade it. What you need is more 20-25 year olds to balance out your core. Grow up in the game together. You want your core to all peak about the same time (probably in 2-3 years from now, way things are progressing).

If its top 5, take the best D available in the draft and trade Eberle/Yak for the above top pairing D+

Tambellini will never let go of a first rounder. He's a hoarder.

I think he's hesitant to let go of anything of significant value and thus he'll never add anything of significant value.

Trading their pick would directly go against the goal of the franchise.

Even if they deal their first, they'll win the lottery and draft Jones. It's win/win anyways.

The Oilers biggest needs are a big center or another skilled d-man, so trading a pick, assuming its in the 3-8 range looking at this years draft doesn't seem all that smart to me (if the pick is 1/2 I don't think trading it is even an option).

Barkov, Jones, Lindholm, Monahan, Nurse, would all be valuable additions in areas of need for the Oilers. The top 10 is rife with big centers and big D-men.

Even MacKinnon, if you land him, it makes Gagner expendable for a top 4 D.

So I probably wouldn't deal the pick unless you're getting something great back.

I think Florida will end up picking 1st. Oilers will be somewhere between 4-10+. Unless they win the lottery again.
