I'm 27 and I have no hatred for the maple Leafs. In my childhood, they were in the other conference so there's no deep seeded rivalry. In modern times, they've become more of a joke/ punching bag for the Bruins since they've posed no real threat. They've never met in the playoffs in my lifetime.
Also 27...Father is a Canadian and grew up in Ontario so is clearly a Leaf fan....Grew up liking TO in West, BOS in East..
Felix Potvin was my favorite all time goalie (Was obv really pumped when we got him) But since they moved Potvin, and moved East I haven't really liked them since..
I liked Gilmour, Anderchyuk, Clarke when he didnt play us obv..I liked a few of their guys back then..
I liked that 93 team a lot....That whole Gretz thing ****ed them over....They could of won that series and would of made for an epic SCF...Too bad..
Leaf fan here (and no i didnt have the audacity to vote in the poll). I think it was probably split 60:40 for that 2011 cup finals. 60% of the leaf fans who cared wanted you guys to win. The ones who didnt either cheer against division rivals or wanted the cup back in canada. But obviously you guys did play montreal in the first round that year so a lot of us started off cheering for you that playoffs and just never stopped. Also like you mentioned (and this was my personal reason for cheering for you), a lot of us knew what the canucks stood for. I still cringe to think what would have happened if they won the cup with THAT kind of team, inevitably inspiring the hockey world to copy them.
Plus the bruins were basically what the leafs wanted to be at the time; pugnacity, testosterone, belligerence, truculence. Brian Burke basically wanted to mold the leafs into that.
Lastly it was comical how mad you guys made the Habs fans that year
That is why the B's won the cup. ...to upset the Habs fans

What made it worse is that the Habs fans really got along with the Lightning and Canucks fans. Both of those teams had styles or players that the Canadiens fans could easily cheer for against Boston. Icing on the cake was having Habs fans watch the Bruins win three game sevens (including against Montreal) on the way to the Cup. It couldn't have gone any worse for them that year (first round exit to Boston).
This Toronto team is the 2007-2008 Boston Bruins. THey remind me so much of that team it is scary. Boston eventually lost in game 7 against Montreal, but that game 6 in Bsoton when Sturm scored marked the return of the Bruins to the playoffs and contending for the Cup.
This year is the Leafs year to return to the playoffs and have that one big win in the first round that starts the march forward. I wonder who their 'Sturm' is going to be?
Oh I don't know, 4 game losing streak, I think leaf fans are getting the 'here we go again' sentiment. Hopefully Carlyle solves the bad losing streak in a manner Ron Wilson never could.
The Lightning might be the most french canadian in the NHL (including the habs) so no surprise they'd identify with them.
What truly appauled me about the habs fans was the rematch of the Bruins and Canucks the next year; Max Lapierre and Dale Weise both pulling the 'glove shake fake' attempting to start fights and then run away. Practically all of the HF boards were calling it a gutless rat move including folks who likely hate the bruins (Lightning, Flyers, Sabre fans) yet Habs fans seemed to think it was great. That truly affirmed that my hatred for the Habs maybe isn't blind if they are willing to support the destruction of the game.
