Bryz put team on his back tonight and carried them to rare shootout win. And maybe saved Lavy's job, despite Homer's statement.

we got awfully lucky that puck was not lifted in OT.

but were awfully UNlucky on the bouncing puck that Schenn tried to shoot

That was a huge win in a very hard fought game. The team needed that and so did Bryz who was stellar tonight.

There's no way Schenn gets suspended for that hit, right?

Anyway, nice win. Now I can tell that arrogant Devils fan I work with to go **** himself.

Bryz had a really good game but again, he's hasn't been consistent at all. Not to be a negative nancy, but I'm more of someone to look at the big picture, the flyers proved to us that the only thing they are consistent of is being inconsistent.
Jesus Christ. I'll take that over being consistently bad, which was the other option, and how it looked like things were heading.

Like you, I'm not sold after a single game, but they played a much tighter checking game and aside from Schenn's charging, a pretty disciplined one also. That was a nice change. There's reason for a sliver of hope that they might put up a fight for the 8th spot yet. Their odds of winning that fight are slim, but I still wanna see them play with guts in meaningful games, play-offs or not. I can stand to see them lose games, but it drives me nuts when they play like a bunch of losers.

Tim P. must be getting heat.

As I suspected:

On Bryz: Stars go in w/8 minutes left. If Bryz gives up 3 goals in shootout,
people are booing, he loses, and I embarrass him.
Still, should be provision for such an issue especially in the age of OT and SO.

Eight minutes left? This is 2013, why not do it via sms or whatever in 30 seconds when the game actually ends?

The picks are generally made by members of the media. There is a Writers' Association and the Broadcasters' Association. I am not sure if they have any input on the matter as to when the stars are selected, perhaps they consider it secondary to their primary obligation and occupation, but in instances such as tonight the result looks flimsy.

I didn't get to watch the game, but someone explain how that Schenn hit is a charge please? Or in any way warrants a possible suspension.

It's a charge because he left both skates before impact. It will be a suspension because the NHL is a chicken**** league, and it'll be a long-ish suspension (4-5 games+ maybe) because Schenn's a repeat offender and he doesn't have enough points to get the James Neal discount.

The refs made the right call on the ice. They don't get the benefit of seeing the hit in slow motion. There shouldn't be a suspension IMO. He left his feet after contact was made and there was no injury on the play. Plus, Schenn did not target the head.

If Shanny does suspend Schenn, I'm gonna go nuts. Especially since Carter didn't get anything for his clear dirty play on Wednesday.

Good game by Bryz. Truly amazing how many odd man rushes Flyers give up vs how few the Devils do though.

I'm not sure if it's the Devils or if it's our offense being impotent. We have what...one breakaway per month? Maybe one odd man rush per game? Compare that to last year, where breakaways and odd mans were common.

I'd lean more towards the offense being impotent. Perhaps Lavi has heeded management's wishes and toned down the offense in favor of defense, but the fowards just aren't that good at it and he's not sure how to coach it. The expected result would indeed be what we've seen; less offense, kinda OK defense.

That's an interesting thought. What's most noticeable to me is how different our forecheck looks. Every game it was dogged harassment of the opposing D when he first got here. It's seemed ot have toned down significantly now. There's been some roster turnover, but I don't think the skating ability of the team has changed that much for better or worse. Perhaps the stylistic change there is to keep a forward back to help the D. When they did it before they had Pronger/Carle and Kimmo/Coburn who didn't have as much trouble holding the line on a 4 on 3.

Just watched the highlights and it seemed that Mesz had a pretty good game - taking shots, throwing pucks towards Hedberg, pinching a little. Almost like the old Mesz. Can anyone confirm?

If you get to see Talbot's goal again, isolate on him going to the net (after which he receives the puck from Gagne). It's an amazing feat of skatecraft.

It was kind of the opposite. People were either yelling at him to make the decision to shoot, or yelling at him to hit the net more when he did.

He looked really fired up at lots of times during the game. He had a hit where I couldn't believe how fast he traversed the beeline he was on. There were other times too.

But it's just such a frustrating year. The goal is nice, but watching players look promising like that always seems like they're "waking up" but then it never lasts. Briere's first 5 or 6 games were like that. He was actually ripping it up in board battles. And it just never paid off.

He was called out by pretty much everyone, including all the other writers. It's valid reasoning, although there is the provision where the guy who scores the shootout winner gets bumped up. It created chaos in Saku Koivu's return to Montreal
