Though I could see a Japanese club in the KHL. You just need a proper marketing. Just put Bob Sapp on the skates and you're on the right track already. Add humiliating challenges as a part of the show during the breaks between periods, bubblegum rain, purple robots singing national anthems, K-pop songs after the goals are scorer and it could work...
The scary thing is this will probably happen if a Japanese team joins KHL

Stavanger Oilers again, this time they announced that they aim to join the European Trophy in 2014. All requirements are met, according to the president of ET after a meeting recently in Stavanger.

Already this year they will 'take measurements' to reach their goal, with their boosted economy.

etc.

Wow interesting developments over Vladivostok. You can tell they want to expand into Japan, South Korea, and maybe China. Also consider that Japan has more registered ice hockey players compared to France, Austria, Denmark, etc. What they need is system and development system. I wouldn't be surprised if we saw a team from one of these countries in the next 5-10 years.

Also it is just a matter of time before a Germany team joins the KHL. Trust me I don't know as much as the German posters here do, but maybe a team in Munich could work? They have a huge corporate sector with potential sponsorships and Olympiahalle München could be their arena. Also take in that the local team there EHC Munich, hasn't been good at all and (heard rumours) that the team is poorly run. So maybe they could be easily replaceable with a KHL team?!

In Munich it's all about FC Bayern München. They have the football team and they have a popular basketball team that plays in the top division. Ice hockey teams have often been replaced in the city due to lack of interest by fans and lack of money - what a shame for such a big city! At least they have a new big sponsor since last year (Red Bull). But if they played KHL and in Olympiahalle that could help off course. I think capacity during hockey games is 11,000+, at least that's the number they had in the derby against Augsburg last year.

Japanese hockey is more or less entirely based around the island of Hokkaido in the north. If they get a KHL team anywhere that isn't Tokyo, that will be the place.

The KHL needs to fix the problems they have now and also get established in Asia before even thinking about expanding to Alaska.

At the point of expansion this offseason is going to be quite exciting! Whenever did the KHL have so many candidates to join?

Something like this, but it's gonna be about 5 teams (Stavanger, Gdansk, Vladivostok + maybe Milano and Medvescak) this time - the league keeps developing

For next year the only serious candidates are Medvescak and Gdansk IMHO.

Gdansk a step closer
A committee of experts from the Kontinental Hockey League has visited Gdansk and conducted an inspection of the infrastructure of the city and its new hockey club, which has submitted an official application to join the League next season.

The committee is satisfied that the city meets the required European standards for hotels, logistics and roads, and that the new 11,000-seater multi-purpose arena, after a few finishing touches, will meet the standards demanded by the KHL.

The club’s finances and its ability to assemble a roster of players are still under discussion, and all the information on the project submitted by the Gdansk club will be subjected to detailed analysis by the relevant KHL specialists.

Maybe Medvescak will be cut because of Gdansk !? However, if all potential candidates joins KHL it will be interesting to see setup od conferences/divisions for next season.

I hope novokuznetsk, chekhov or some other poor club with no market and bad arena gets thrown out of the league ASAP for these teams to make room.

I would be a huge supporter of the Norwegian team if they got in. Medvescak is also awesome, not sure about the Polish club tho. Still most excited for Milan. They have some hockey culture in northern Italy and some decent players with potential to develop their own not worse than Donbass for example. The next few seasons will be very interesting in the KHL. I think Slovan and Lev opened the floodgates. If this second wave of European entries is successful, I dont see how the Finns or even the Swedes would pass on the opportunity
