Nonis is still holding every 2014 pick plus two 4ths from oilers/coyotes and now this 7th rounder. We have atleast 1 pick every round in the next 2 drafts at present.thats cool noni.

Are you sure that the Leafs don't have to give up a 2014 4th to Nashville in the deal for Franson and Lombardi?

Edit: Oops, it's a 2013 4th in the Franson deal not 2014. Move along! Nothing to see here.

This trade was a long time coming. Steckel seemed to be only good for the faceoff and that was it. Plus with Lupul coming back we needed to open up a roster spot.

This is essentially Steckel for nothing, but I'm totally fine with that. Steckel was a massive liability at everything but faceoffs, and this year he wasn't even winning faceoffs. We have 5 much better centres already on the Leafs (Bozak, Grabo, Kadri, McClement and Komarov), and Colborne is arguably better too.

Lasch won a scoring title in finland and might have to be viewed as a wait see before calling it a nothing return. He helps replace some scoring for the Marlies too.

If Brown can get a 4th, then Steckel can get more than that.

In case you haven't noticed, all Brown has is his speed, fists, and a moustache

Hey, those low draft picks could look crappy now, but those draft picks could turn into a St. Louis, a Datsyuk, or a Zetterberg in the future

Those picks in the low rounds are like lottery tickets. There is usually a gem picked really late in every draft, and the more picks we have, the more chances to hit it big! So good for the Leafs to stock up.

Size, grit, faceoff prowess. Steckel is a role player, Brent is a tweener.

Personally, I much rather have seen Orr sent packing to make room for Lupul, if that is truly the reason. I don't believe we need 2 goons dressed for every ****n game.

Playing a team with multiple super goons makes you think twice, one missed step could be a lottery ticket to one of your players scoring the Kypper punch and early retirement. This team does not get man handled anymore period.

That's no longer true. As the scouting of each team improves, and scouting networks extend all around the globe, very little of worth is left to the 7th round. You may be lucky and find yourself serviceable player (Gunnarsson, Demers, etc), but I would hardly call it lottery. More like a crap-shoot. The days of picking up guys like Miller, Datsyuk in very late rounds are long gone.

There is a 50 contract limit per CBA and Anaheim is a competitive Cup team that is likely going to make moves in the coming weeks to add to the team at the trade deadline.

Lasch's likelihood of inclusion in this deal is more about offsetting Steckel's contract team overall count wise, and leaving them more room for additions, from a Anaheim perspective.

If the Leafs get anything out of this at all will be a wait and see, and a Marlie import at worst.

McLaren #203 07 draft Colin Greening home grown #204 05 draft, Joe Vitali 195 home grown penguins pick 05 draft. They actually always happen but take longer to develope. There are a couple every draft. With scouting like you say it is makes it all the better chances of getting a solid pick there.

Pekka Rinne 258 04 draft not to shabby either. Thats a 8th rounder!

It was done to make room for Lupul. He's back from injury and will be playing tonight.

He's 5'9", 26 years old, and so far this season has split his time between the ECHL, AHL and SEL. He's not even a high end AHL player (undersized offensive player, but put up 5 points in 19 AHL games), he'll almost certainly never make the AHL, which makes him a "nothing" for the Leafs. Unless the 7th turns into something (HIGHLY unlikely), this deal is absolutely "Steckel for nothing," but that's fine.

I think that you take a chance with a trade like this, but you're right.

Essentially the trade is nothing, but you could be getting a guy like Spencer Abbott that is a pleasant surprise. And the 7th round pick could be a trade chip for the deadline. I know that you're going to say that its a 7th round pick, but look around the league and see whats going on with trades. Matt Kassian got traded for a 6th, Tangradi for a conditional 7th. Both these guys would serve as solid depth on a Leafs team looking to stay in the playoff picture.

The guy is just a contract they had to take back. I doubt he's helping the Marlies when his career totals in the AHL are 5 points in 19 games. The Ducks literally just said "yeah but take our worst contracted player back to make this deal work."

He is reporting to the Marlies and seems like he doesn't have to make the AHL already there bro. Was a hobey baker nominee finalist and has won 2 scoring titles now in different segments of his developement.

He needs to be seen.

Steckel was mentoring Kadri on FOs. He wasn't useless but his time has come to move on.
