Good riddance to all those UFA's (except Langdon who I would look to keep) and non-tender Traverse, Blouin and Dwyer. Sundstrom is also a potential non-tender since he would make close to 2 million and that's alot for what he brings IMO.

Donald Audette, buy-out

I resigned Dackell for a year to add depth to the third line. A Sundstrom Begin Dackell line can shut down any line in the league. I want to see rookies get broken in on the 2nd and 4th lines.

So long as the 4th line is used as a second checking line, and the 2nd as a second scoring line, the rookies can learn the different aspects of the NHL without feeling as much pressure.

Next year will be a difficult year for the team, and for the fans. There will be alot of rookies on the team, but if we have semi-stable 1st and 3rd lines, the team probably won't tank as bad as it could with inexperienced players on every line.

This is what I would like to see as the lineup next October:

Bulis Koivu Ryder
Higgins/Hossa/Zednik Ribeiro Zednik/Dagenais/Balej
Sundstrom/Higgins Begin Dackell/Sundstrom (modified only when the oponent has an average 1st line.)
Hossa/Higgins/Langdon Kilger Balej/Dagenais

Souray Komisarek
Markov Rivet
Hainsey Brisebois
Bouillon

Theodore
Garon

I do nto think any of the UFA group III should be resigned. Guys like langdon can be obtained for free, still he is the only one I would even consider obtaining. With Higgins coming along we do not need both Sundstrum and Dackell. Only one of them will do. With Gratton and Begin we do not need Juneau. With Komisarek and Archer coming along nicely we do not need Quintal anymore. That is my take on things. Perreault in my opininon will be gone before the trade deadline!

Well it all depends which kid is ready to move up to the NHL. But if we dont have anybody ready for the 3rd line.. we have to keep at least Sundstrom or Dackell. I like both of them.

We could probably argue that at least one of Balej, Higgins, Hossa or Plekanek will be ready next year! My bet is on both Balej and Higgins

Balej is not a third line player, anyway not from what I hear. Higgins maybe... But I would've liked to see him in the 2nd line.

Let go by not resigning:

Andreas Dackell, (III)
Joe Juneau, (III)
Darren Langdon, (III)
Yannick Perrault, (III)
Stephane Quintal, (III)

Let go by not giving qualificating(sp?) offer

Sylvain Blouin, (II)
Gordie Dwyer, (II)
Martti Jarventie, (II)
Niklas Sundstrom, (II) (Then try to sign him for less money after)
Patrick Traverse, (II)

I guess now we have spot for Hossa, Higgins/Plekanec and Balej

I agree, Marc. I would add Jarventie to the list on non-qualifying offers as he clearly does not have North American pro plans any more, and the Habs have decent and much younger defensive depth in the system right now. I would also look at Sundstrom and maybe do a "Kilgeresque" deal as Boutmania suggested. $2M is a lot for him, but he is a role player that all teams need. He also really picked his game up when paired with Begin, and that is our likely #3 centre next year IMO.

The other mystery is Bob Gainey's plans for the Bulldog goaltending situation. He has a decent tandem in Fichaud and Damphousse, so I can see them signed for another one year (not too much money being tied up between them). However, there are some good young goalies in the system (Michaud in the ECHL and the young Euros like Puurula, Halak, and Heino-Lindberg) that management will eventually want to see promoted to the AHL. Puurula, at 21 and not getting the same ice time as last year, may be better served to get good #2 duties in Hamilton rather than playing backup in the Finnish league. Food for thought.

Kilger took the cut because he likes being in Montreal, I think Sundstrom likes playing for us but the fans don't show any support to him even with his great play.. so we can't really tell if he would take a paycut. I think it's a possibility.

Good thread!

MONTREAL
Darren Langdon, (III) (good for chemistry, no brainer)
Steve Begin, (II) (good for chemistry-no brainer, will replace Juneau)
Mathieu Garon, (II) (no brainer)
Marcel Hossa, (II) (no brainer)
Mike Ribeiro, (II) (no brainer)
Michael Ryder, (II) (no brainer)
Sheldon Souray, (II) (no brainer)
Richard Zednik, (II) (no brainer)

Pierre Dagenais, (II) (depends on how he performs.. but probably yes)
Niklas Sundstrom, (II) (if we get him cheap, probably no)

LET GO:
Andreas Dackell, (III) (he's playing well probably because he's an FA, but we have plenty of kids to take his spot)
Joe Juneau, (III) (on his last legs, Begin will take over... he had a nice run tho)
Yannick Perrault, (III) (he was a good stopgap player, but we have no room for him anymore)
Stephane Quintal, (III) (on his last legs)
Sylvain Blouin, (II) (don't need him, unless we keep him in Hamilton)
Jean-Francois Damphousse, (II) (Hamilton... yes)
Gordie Dwyer, (II) (Hamilton? Or let him earn a job elsewhere?)
Eric Fichaud, (II) (As long as Michaud is worked in, I don't care)
Martti Jarventie, (II) (Don't need him)
Patrick Traverse, (II) (HELL no)

This is what I would like to see as the lineup next October:

Bulis Koivu Ryder
Higgins/Hossa/Zednik Ribeiro Zednik/Dagenais/Balej
Sundstrom/Higgins Begin Dackell/Sundstrom (modified only when the oponent has an average 1st line.)
Hossa/Higgins/Langdon Kilger Balej/Dagenais

Souray Komisarek
Markov Rivet
Hainsey Brisebois
Bouillon

Theodore
Garon
I would do exactly the same .

I'd try to resign Langdon for sure. Dackell would be tempting but I think he'll have alot of options based on his play this year... so I wouldn't bet on him coming back in what could be a lesser role.

It would be a risk to not qualify Sunny. We need him on our 3rd line next year but, you guys are right, $2mil is alot for him. Dilemna?

The thing is : Damphousse has a better win %, better GAA, a very similar save %, has more shutouts in less outings and is younger by 4 years... there's no doubt in my mind who my priority would be in nets (for Hamilton).
