Although I think the discussion of having a young core is overstated, excluding my home team as my biases may affect judgement, Boston and Ottawa have some pieces that can lead to long and sustained success. Boston has better depth of talent but Ottawa has an elite talent heading their future.

What does it mean by young core? a group of players that will be part of the team for many year to come?

I meant it to mean the key young guys on your team that are going to make up your teams core in a few years.

Yea thats because of their draft position , the tradeoff is not making the playoffs and they have to develop but when they do they will be good

Now that I have grasped the concept of the thread. I would say that Ottawa does not have a good young core, as concieved by the thread starter.

Turris and Karlsson are likely the only 2 that qualify. Both being young and established NHLers that are of high quality.

Others solid talents like Cowen, Zibanejad, Silfverberg and Lehner have not established themselves yet, and the other guys like Smith, Condra, Greening, Wiercioch, Bishop, O"Brien, Daugavins, Gryba, Regin while youngish might not have the upside of the others.

So yeah, Montreal has a great young core, no doubt as do a few others, such as Pittsburgh, Edmonton, Chicago etc.

Well to be fair I included Galchenyuk for mtl, and I would say by that measure Zibanijad also qualifies. Cowen and Lehnar somewhat as well too (though goalies tale longer to prove themselves, look at Raycroft, Andrew)

Letang 26 next month, Crosby 26 in August, Malkin 27 in July, Neal 26 in Sept. Young in regular years, middle age in hockey years.

Not sure if Bennett or Sutter are core guys, but I am pretty sure Depres is (21).

I went 25 and under when I said Hawks. Toews, Kane, Leddy, Saad, Shaw, will all play NEXT season at 25 or under.

In order,

Edm, Ott, Chi, Col, Mtl.

Edm is not worth explaining

Ott: didnt think i had to explain, but looking at previous posts, I will: has a rediculous pool of young players currently starting their NHL careers (See Slivferberg, Zibenajad, Cowen, Lehner) on top of young players with NHL seasons under their belt (Karlsson, Spezza, Michalek, Turris)

Chi No need to explain

Col Has a solid group up front(Matt-tied with JT in points- Tavares, ROR, Landeskog,..), and a potential top 10 goaltender. D core only includes EJ

MTL With Price as their back bone ( may you guys never forget this, even when he has a bad stretch. Guy is top 3 in entire league ), Subban on D and Galchenyuk, Patch and maybe Eller. Well desrved to be top 5 in young core. May swap with COL at some point... but Homer goggles are gonna be left on.

IMO, I'd put St. Louis over MTL and COL.

That sounds ... pretty convenient. Toews and Kane are exactly 1 (ONE!) year younger than Crosby, Letang, and Neal, and a whopping 2 years younger than Malkin. Yet the Pens' core is too old to qualify for this thread, while the Hawks' isn't?

Any way you look at it, the Pens core still should qualify for this thread because their core will be in contention for a Cup for at the very least the next 4 or 5 seasons before they start having to worry about being "old".

At the very least, it's ridiculous to say the Pens guys are too old and then list a team with star players who are only one freakin' year younger than the Pens' "greybeards".

This thread really does need a definition of terms. Or one term in any event. Young.

The Pens' core is just entering their prime years, which is hard to believe given how long they have dominated the news and even on the ice. Mid-20's. Which is young in hockey years. Assuming that they, meaning Crosby, Malkin, Letang, Fleury and Neal, stay together the entire time that core will have another at least 7 or 8 years of potentially dominant play.

So yeah define terms. In my book if the core is likely to remain together and dominate like that one will for the next decade, that qualifies, but reasonable minds can and will differ.

Right now, nobody can beat Tampa:

Conacher, Killorn, Stamkos, Aulie, Tyrell (but he is not important for the future) 23
Johnson, Hedman, Gudas 22
Palat 21
Lindbäck 24

And Purcell (27), Pyatt and Pouliot (both 26) are also pretty young

A 2010 3rd round defender, that gets compared to Scott Stevens for his heavy hits (but his offensive ability is limited). Played just 3 games so far, but he will stay in Tampa. Got 20min last night and has 14 hits and 7 blocked shots.
He is an absolute beast and teams will hate playing against him.

Oh yes he leds the AHL with a +32 (before his callup, not sure if he is still the leader.
