Where does Dietz fit in the plans for the Habs in the Future? He's having a better year then Thrower, and he seems to be a gifted offensive D-man. Can someone tell me more about this prospect!

Expected, but good none the less. He's looked very good in the WHL.

Like you said, he's a gifted offensive D, he's often like a 4th forward out there, but he can also play a shutdown defensive role and has good size. He absolutely destroyed the WHL in the 2nd half of this season.

His skating is probably the part he needs to work on to maximize his NHL chances. It's not bad, but it's not really good either. Somewhere in-between.

Not really worth it when you're on the ice 25 mins a game.

Worst kept secret of them all. Welcome officially in the org...DD. Another DD in the organization for quite some time. As far as his skating is concerned, I compared it to Morgan Ellis' skating...not great...not bad, to be improved. Yet, I believe he did improve it as the year progressed.

Thanks for the info.. Glad to have another young asset in our system... Man talk about a 180 change in attitude and performance with this team.. I knew we were better then a 15th place team in the East but man this group is really impressing me! As a DIE HARD Habs fan, I didn't see this success right away! This reminds me of the late 80's where it was expected that the Habs would win most of their games.

MONTREAL – Montreal Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin announced Sunday the signing of defenseman Darren Dietz to a three-year contract (2013-14 to 2015-16). As per club policy, financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

In 72 games with the WHL’s Saskatoon Blades this season, Dietz has collected 58 points (24 goals, 34 assists). He ranks first among the league defensemen in goals, and third among WHL rearguards in points. He shows 100 penalty minutes and a +9 plus/minus differential.

Dietz, 19, has recorded 131 points (48 goals, 83 assists) in 220 games since his junior debut with Saskatoon in 2009-10. The 6’01’’ and 195 lbs defenseman has served 288 penalty minutes and displays a +29 plus/minus differential.

A native of Medicine Hat, Alberta, Dietz was selected in the fifth round, 138th overall by the Canadiens at the 2011 NHL Entry Draft. He took part in his first training camp with the Canadiens in September 2011.

so... He's a gifted 2-way defenseman, able to do shutdown and pinch on the offense...?

...damn, how many of those do we have?!?!?!

He'll join the Dogs next season, I hope, and maybe graduate after a year of development.

The Habs found some gems in the 5th round such as Gallagher and now Dietz.

....

Trade our 1st round pick for 6x 5th round
Trade our 3 2nd round picks for 12x 5th round
and trade our 2 3rd round pick for 4x 5th round

We'll tear the league apart in 4 years!!

So by that logic, let's also wait on Dietz right?

I do not follow Hudon closely, but I have seen a number of Dietz's games. From what I have seen, I am convinced that Dietz will make the NHL.

He's had maybe the best year of all our prospects in junior. Chuckie excepted. Anyway, comparisons aside, Dietz has progressed incredibly well since he was drafted. Really an easy prospect to like. He could turn out to be a really versatile, minute eating D.

Really hoping for Nygren to sign soon..

I don't know if I'm just getting too excited, but our d-corps depth just seems to developing into something too extraordinary
