The Springfield Falcons, AHL affiliate of the NHL's Columbus Blue Jackets, announced on Tuesday that they have released defenseman Mike Banwell from his professional try-out (PTO) and have signed him to an AHL standard player's contract (SPC) for the remainder of the 2012-2013 season.
Perusing the AHL transactions list and I notice that on January 24th, David Laliberte signed a SPC with Adirondack. I swear I checked that list three times last week and that was never on there before?

Player News: The Sound Tigers & forward Chad Costello have signed a mutual release agreement, releasing Costello from his AHL contract #BST
Here is why :
Quote:
Chad Costello was skating as an extra forward with Adam Huxley, but within a couple of hours of the end of practice, Costello was released. “We talked the last little while to try to find the right fit for him, where he is as a professional, where he fit into our team,” Pellerin said later on. “We came to an agreement and thought it best for him to move on and continue playing. He’s a young guy with a lot of talent and a lot of skill.” His role had kind of drifted around; he got some power-play time recently as the drought raged on, but at even strength he hadn’t played much beyond fourth-line minutes.
Costello will return to play with the Colorado Eagles. He was the leading scorer in the ECHL with 49 points in 27 games before being promoted to the AHL.
--------
Darian Dziurzynski, who is currently under contract with Portland, has signed a two years contract with Phoenix. This new deal will only start next season. Dziurzynski has 9 points in 42 games this season
Oklahoma signs Kenndal McFaull, not sure if it's an ATO or PTC.
Quote:
Warriors' captain Kendall McFaull signed a professional try-out contract with the AHL's Oklahoma City Barons on Thursday and will report to the team after the Warriors season ends this weekend.
which sounds like an ATO, but then McFaull says
Quote:
“It's a standard player contract for the remainder of this season, so I have a month, or two months, to prove myself and then after that, I'm back to being a free agent and have to earn myself another contract,”
According to the AHL.com, Daniel Maggio (Lake Erie), Andrew Carroll (Connecticut) and Bretton Cameron (Texas) were signed to SPCs. Drew McIntyre (Toronto) was released and signed with the Leafs[
By the way, this could be one of my last updates of the season, however there are still a few players who have played plenty of games in the AHL this season but haven't officially (or reportedly) signed SPCs.
Played more than 25 games (the length of a PTO) : Rod Pelley 52 (Norfolk), *Vincent LoVerde (Manchester) 42, Mike Matczak 29 (Abbotsford), *Brad Winchester 28 (Milwaukee), Jonathan Cheechoo 26 (Oklahoma) and Mike Brennan 26 (Worcester)
According to theahl.com :
William Wrenn (Texas) and Michael Limbas (Milwaukee) signed SPCs
Mike Brennan (Worcester) and Devin DiDiomete (Chicago) signed renewed their PTO contract.
-Julien Brouilette, who is under contract with Hershey, has signed with Washington for 13-14.
However I don't know if the contract starts now or next year. I would bet that it starts now but usually that kind of deal isn't called a two years contract, it's rather a ATO (amateur try-out contract) for the remainder of the season and a full year contract for next season.
For this reason, I would be a little reluctant to add Sabourin to the list, however I'll add him to the list of players under contract for 2013-2014 (which I'll start soon).

Some players signed to AHL contracts were involved in trades/loans in the past two days (the AHL trade deadline was wednesday) :
The Chicago Wolves have received defenseman Brent Regner from the Peoria Rivermen in exchange for future considerations. In addition, the Vancouver Canucks have loaned forward Stefan Schneider to Peoria and the Wolves have loaned forward Nathan Longpre to the Rivermen.
By the way, this could be one of my last updates of the season, however there are still a few players who have played plenty of games in the AHL this season but haven't officially (or reportedly) signed SPCs.

Played more than 25 games, but didn't officially sign a SPC or a 2nd or 3rd PTO : Mike Matczak 34 (Abbotsford), Brett Lebda 32 (Binghamton), Matt Marquardt 27 (Charlotte), Vincent LoVerde 51 (Manchester), Colten Yellow Horn 28 (Manchester), Chris Huxley 27 (Manchester) Rod Pelley 60 (Norfolk), Jonathan Cheechoo 35 (Oklahoma).
I'll add LoVerde and Pelley to the list because they played almost the entire season in the AHL. Hopefully, theahl.com will do a better job when updating contract status next year.
