Everyone would love this kid. Including me. The Oilers should be able to pretty much guarantee him ice time next year (or this year, he's gotta be better than Potter, ha ha).

He looks impressive.

He's pretty mobile for a 6'8 defenseman. Seems like he's got a lot of poise, and he definitely seems to do a great job of getting the puck to the net. Good shot.

I think the assumption is that he is going to sign, he values his education a lot and reading this article, I think he's a UFA target next year, not this year.

Quote:
Rather than turn pro and spend time in the minors. teams indicated that he'd likely spend at least a year, and maybe two, in the American Hockey League before getting a shot at the NHL.

“Teams have said that they agree that this was the right choice for me,” Sustr said. “As far as development goes, I'm better off staying in college. There's no rush for me to get out of here — I'm real happy with where I'm at.”

Sustr conceivably could dance the professional dance again as next season draws to a close.

“If you want to leave early, I think you should be leaving for the NHL,” he said. “Otherwise I think you should be making sure you're getting your degree and getting the time to develop.

“I would have no problem to be here for two more years as part of this program.”

Obviously the only way you could get him to sign would be to offer him a very nice contract and NHL minutes... how many teams can offer him that?

Quite a few, but it would be a mistake. There are far too many guys that get signed from College and want to play in the NHL right away and then look like crap afterwards. It seems like lately, very few seem to do all that well.

Off the top of my head, Da Costa, Butler, Winchester, who else am I missing?

Didn't realize that all 3 were Senators, maybe he should avoid that team if he wants to be a legit NHL'er, lol.

Or maybe he should sign there if he wants a chance to play in the NHL as Ottawa has a history of giving those opportunities.

Everybody wants him for the delectable size component and potential.
As a Pens fan, I sure hope the good vibes from camp translates, but realistically, if he wanted a road to the NHL he cannot go many places where the waiting list is longer.

A signing of Sustr would make it even more appealing to deal guys like Dumoulin and/or Maatta in the search for playoff upgrades though. There's still be plenty depth remaining.

A lot of these kids want to jump to the NHL asap but then their careers take a hit because of it, the examples I gave, yeah all Sens guys, but are perfect examples of that. Had they spent time in the AHL, they would be better players for it.

I'd take Tyler Bozak over all 3 the Sens took and then basically destroyed at this current time. Sustr seems like a smart kid though, he knows he has a lot of work to do, I think he stays in College another year, he seems like Agostino in the sense that he wants to take advantage of the Education and be prepared for life away from hockey when his playing days are over. I read a Q&A he had with McKeens or some other site and he is pretty keen on his Scholastic career as well.

That's an incredibly short-sighted view. If we signed him, you can bet that it would be with the mindset to trade one our existing D prospects (Bortuzzo/Maatta/Dumoulin) for forward help. I don't believe the Pens will make a serious run unless they feel like he's better than some of the top guys they already have. But if they do feel that way, then sign him and trade someone else. That's called good asset management.

i would love for the Pens to pick this guy up. he already has the size. he just needs to smooth out the kinks in his game.

i think the Pens have more interesting options as far as needs go, though (like Lagraniere if im getting his name right). the Pens aren't known for their college signings outside of Thiessen (who is basically just an AHL goalie) so i won't hold my breath.

I would love for the Penguins to sign this guy. We could really use someone like this whose ready NOW. He has a twitter account too I believe but it's locked to non-followers and he probably only lets those he knows follow him.

Loved if he signed with the Habs. A combo of him and Tinordi would be amazing

That's a pretty interesting statement considering Bozak played all of 32 games for the Marlies, while Butler played 47 for the Bingo Sens.

Bozak's just a better player, it's got nothing to do with the Sens "destroying" Butler. They gave him huge opportunities and he made the most of his limited skillset with them.

Jesse Winchester was a very good bottom 6 player for us, and played very well for 4 seasons until he ran into concussion issues last year. He pretty much maxed out his potential with the Sens.

It's way too early to make any such harsh judgement calls on Da Costa, who is developing nicely with Binghamton in the AHL.

Better examples for you would have been Matt Gilroy with the Rangers, Casey Wellman with the Wild, or Christian Hanson with the Leafs.

Im asking this half for rhetoric snark, half for genuine interest:

when was the last time a college FA panned out to be more than a decent\serviceable player, aside from Matt Read?

Stephane Da Costa? Matt Gilroy? Tyler Bozak?

Excepting Justin Schultz, who was a different situation.

not just saying this because i want him (because i do), but i know the Flyers have been interested in him for a while. I wouldn't be surprised if he were to become a Flyer.

Okay, the comparision to Taylor Hanson was funny, but we're getting WAAAAAY off-topic with the discussions of the musical merits of Hanson, Pitbull et al.

This thread is for the discussion of Andrej Sustr, let's try to restrict it to that, mkay?
