Keep in mind, some of that money probably will be used to buyout other players like Upshall (would be owed $4.667M) and Clemmensen (would be owed $867K) which would equate to about $5.5M. The rest of the money saved on Jovo's retirement probably will go to re-signing our own players like Matthias, Mueller, etc who will need pay increases. So yes it will be money being used but not in the way I think you would want.

Note: And no I'm not saying that I know for sure that Upshall or Clemm are being bought out this summer and have no inside info. Just what I would expect to happen given the performances & cost associated with those players.

Thank god he's probably retiring. Decent career but man is he bad right now. Saves us the trouble of his contract and telling him he can't cut it next year.

Clemmensen should be bought out, but I think what happens with Upshall is that he's traded and we'll retain some of the salary. Comes cheaper that way even thou it counts towards the cap.

Agreed on Clemmensen. With Upshall, it will depend on some things. If we retain 50% of his remaining contract (which is the limit I believe), then they only would owe him $1.75M each of the next 2 yrs ($3.5M in total) and only about $600K more than buying him out in those seasons. The question is, what would we get in return and if we have to take on a contracted player, that may not be beneficial for us. We may be better off just buying him out and signing a player we do want.

Say we buy out Clemmensen and Theodore retires/moves on. Who do we go after to pair with Markstrom?

I thought the 35+ rule meant we still pay him even if he retires? I remember when he signed the contract, a few people said he'll probably play a couple of years and then retire, which wouldn't matter anyway because we don't spend to the cap.

" Players who sign multi-year contracts when they are age 35 or older (calculated on June 30 of the season the contract begins) count toward the cap under all circumstances, regardless of where (or if) the player is playing. The only cap relief is $100,000 from the player's cap hit if he is assigned to the minors after the first year of the contract. A buyout — either ordinary-course or compliance — can also reduce the cap hit."

Or does the cap hit still count without actual payment?

There most likely will be some guys that are RFAs that wont receive a contract offer (Steve Mason is an obvious candidate) so we won't know till June about who's available. I think it could also be a trade that will give us someone to split with Markstrom (not talking about Luongo either).

It's this.

His caphit stays but no actual money is paid to him since he retired. This was made by the NHL to prevent teams from signing +35 guys to huge frontloaded contracts, to only have the said players retire before the last years.

Just spoke with #FlaPanthers spokesman… we're probably all reading into the Jovo thing too much.

#FlaPanthers Dineen mentioned "announcement" regarding Jovo after Saturday's game, probably just meant injury updates.
Hold your horses guys, might not be retirement after all.

I know his play has been pretty poor, but I am going to miss Jovo Cop. Easily my second favorite Panther of all time.

Supposedly he was considering retiring before he signed with us. If he doesn't retire now, maybe he will at the end of the season. I can't imagine him trying to destroy his body any further. He'll be leaving a ton of money on the table but like I said, he was considering retiring anyway.

Well, Vanbiesbrouck is only 49 years old so let's sign him to a contract similar to Jovanovski's

Never seen a more unanimous decision by the fans to want a player to retire.

#NHL news. #Panthers Ed Jovanovski's hip issue continues to be cause of concern. Retirement rumors not true I'm told.

Might as well collect until the season is over if you're going to be on IR
