No and no.

He's slow and it shows, he's bad defensively, and his cap hit is atrocious.
He's a big guy but he never uses his size to his advantage.

If this were last year, I probably say yes. But this season he is noticeably playing much worse.

At the same time this guy has 7.5 caphit, is nothing but a goal scorer and has been playing like crap this season, which is the reason why he is being dangled here in the first place. Cap also drops significantly next year so...

Also, why not go all in for Perry instead? He's clearly the better player and you don't have to give assets if you sign him in the summer. If you make a dumb trade for Gaborik there's not even a chance for that to happen.

As for the Canucks, there's simply no room for him next season. Not that I would trade for him anyway even if there was room. You keep bringing up players (Kassian, Jensen) that most people, including the Canucks management, weren't ready to trade for Nash and Nash is ten times the player Gaborik is.

I hate the idea of going "all in" on a free agent, for sure you go after him, but I wouldn't put everything on a big name just signing here

Not sure if you got the reference. There was a funny YouTube video out about Heatley a few years back.

Iginla is an option who would be just a rental since he's contract runs out this year. Looking at the UFA list for this summer I see Brad Boyes is on that list. I hope Gilles doesn't sign him because that's something he would do.

Thoughts?
Jagr for 3c. Lets do it. That guy has a couple years in him yet

In what universe (except maybe Bryz') is Jagr a centerman?

Jagr is off to Montreal, book it. Plus his footspeed, or lack thereof would be exposed on this team.

Watching PA Parenteau play this season, I wonder how he would have fared in Vancouver. He's showing some very excellent playmaking ability in Colorado on a variety of lines.

I would take a chance on Heatly as long as we can retain his rights and sign him to a good deal. He would be deadly on our top line. Then Burr could be on the second line.

maybe Minni would trade for Booth.

What about Joe Vitale or Tyler Kennedy from the Pens?

I feel they could be a real nice addition to the team.

I think there was a rumor that the Canucks were targeting Bennett or Tinordi with their 2010 1st round pick, and when both were taken the pick was sent to Florida for Ballard. If that was the case then I could see Gillis still being interested in him.

I like the potential Bennett has, could be very much like a Blake Wheeler. I remember that Gillis was very high on Bennett at the draft. These are the types of players we need to target if we "sell" at the deadline.

I was watching the Buffalo-Washington game last night, and a few things stood out.

The usual Ott comment. If, for some odd reason, Buffalo had him available, Gillis should take a flyer out.

Mike Green is the playmaker/offensive D that our powerplay needs. His cap hit is higher then I'd like, but if Washington goes full sell, if we feel confident we can move a goalie and Ballard, Green-Edler or Green-Garrison as an offensive pairing would be great.

Myers isn't the same guy that earned that big 5.5 million dollar cheque. He's enormous, has reasonable footspeed, but just seems, mentally, one step behind the play defensively, and is playing very aggressively in the offensive zone. A little polishing, and he could be a steal, price be damned, after a year or so as a reclamation project.

Marcus Johansson looked great, not just when he was scoring or almost scoring. He was in rumours regarding Luongo to Washington...and yesterdays game took him from "nice to have" to "we need that guy".

Pommenville, Hodgson and Vanek all looked...fairly sharp, none of whom I imagine being available cheaply.

Ditto Ovechkin, Backstrom and...well most of the Caps' scoring forwards.

Chimera got his first too, so...awesome? I've always like the guy, but not for his scoring prowess.

Ward was nearly invisible, which as a shutdown forward...sure?

Leino...didn't look half bad. If you didn't tell me his salary, I'd say he could be a realistic 2/3 C for us. Ugh...that cap hit though!

Any way, both are bottom feeding teams, likely selling off assets at or before the deadline. Unless we decide to join them in the "high draft pick club" this year, I think some trades could be made for futures.
