Miller isn't going anywhere unless we want to give up Pitkanen, (hells no)
and Noronen could probably be had, but it would still take a very significant package to get him (think around the package for Comrie.) The only goaltender we could get out of Buffalo somewhat reasonably would be Biron, who probably isn't much of an upgrade (if at all) over Esche.

Every year as soon as we hit a slump, guys like you come out of the woodwork, shouting about how the team stinks, etc, etc, etc. Eventually the Flyers will win a cup and when they do, you will be the first guy drunk on Broad St bragging about how you are the only true fan, how you have been supporting the team since 74/75, blah, blah, blah.

What is the fascination people have with being "one of the only true fans"? If you're a human being you have an opinion. If the team isn't doing well your opinion is probably bad.

I love when people get on board the bandwagon. Popularity soars. There's more about the team in the press because more people are interested. I meet all kinds of people because of that common hope for a championship. When people fall off, I still watch and care and hope, regardless of how many other "fans" there are.

There is no way of judging "true" fandom and there are no prizes for being one

It's Negadelphia. When a team hits a slump, it's time to dump everyone, fire the coach, bring in the backup, and tank it for a good draft pick. When they bounce back, it's "I've been a fan since 19XX, I've been through (names of bad coaches and players) I've always stuck with them, blah blah blah." Always has been, always will.

I've lived other places and it's a natural phenomenon. It isn't based solely on Philadelphia's love/hate relationship with..........everything.

I read yesterday on the general hockey forum about fans on the Left coast being the same way.

One, I wouldn't get drunk, because I'm not an idiot. Two, I wouldn't brag about supporting the team since 74/75 because I was born in 82. Three, you actually have to be ON a bandwagon to jump off & then get back on again... when they get to the playoffs, and show promise, I'll be behind them like always. I still support the team now, but I'm not going to spout off blind faith and say Robert Esche & Jeff Hackett are gods, because they are mediocre at best, on an amazing defensive hockey team. The best goalie the Flyers have had in the last 5 years (or more) was Brian Boucher, who lead the team to a 3-2 series lead over New Jersey in 2000 until Lindros came back and threw everything off... Granted, where is Boucher now? I don't even think he's in the NHL any more, but you cannot argue with the success he had, without him in 2000, they would have lost in the first round... he stole games, and made saves he shouldn't have that year. No body had ever even heard the name Robert Esche until he came to philly, and just because he's playing for a team in the spotlight doesn't make him good. And no matter what he does in the regular season (he or Hackett) it all comes down to the playoffs, and neither of them are that good.

But as I said, I hope I eat my words... I'd love to see Esche turn into the next Roy or Brodeur.... but IMO, that's just NOT going to happen.

Yeah, when they lose I still watch the games too (or I did when I had cable) and still get excited & disappointed as anyone with an interest in a team would. Just the fact that a person has an opinion about the team they like, even if it is negative, shows that they care about what's going on. If I was like "whatever, they lost, whatever they won" then I guess the sport and the team really didn't matter to me. I'd love Philly to win the cup more than anything... but I just don't see it happening with the tenders we've got.
