Where would have Halpern fit in?

Reports from 3 or 4 weeks ago indicate that the Habs were in the mix for Jeff Halpern who ended up signing with Dallas as a partial replacement for Jason Arnott.

He is that elusive RH center the team has been looking for. Where would he have fit in on the Habs if Gainey had been able to sign him? 2nd or 3rd line? The guy is a tweener. A very good 3rd line center, but an average top six forward. Maybe coupled with Kovy and Sammy, we would have had some sort of productive line?

Exactly, he would have been the Mike Johnson. Technically pencilled in for 3rd line, but always an outside chance of trying to step it up on a higher line in the event of injuries or in the event that he just mixed better with some of the players on the other lines. Same spot as Johnson is in now. Same spot as Plekanec and perhaps even Bonk are in, for that matter.

Halpern can play 2nd or 3rd line, as a LW or a Center. Also, I think that even with Halpern, we would have still acquired Johnson.

I guess I don't watch them enough to be sure. But my general inclination would be that Halpern can be a bit more energetic and grittier (although sometimes at the expense of his health) where Johnson is a bit more "cerebral" and talented. But it's close enough either way. I think I'd rather have a 100% guaranteed healthy Halpern, just because I think our lineup could stand a bit more sandpaper at times. But I'm not going to complain that we didn't get him on a 4 year $2M per deal.

Different types of players...

I don't think Jeff Halpern should be playing in anyone's top 6, I don't know where you guys are getting that from, maybe 2 or 3 years ago, but he's essentially a perfect fit on the 3rd or 4th line.

Mike Johnson 'could' play in a top 6 role, but is more suited as a 3rd line player IMO.

typical.....

After 2002 when Theodore brought us to the play-off on his back, winnig the hart and vesina, drafting the next Scott Stevens and Alexander Mogliny instead of one player, losing Markov who was also part of the deal, We were happy that Savard hadn't pull off the trade and now we're all angry, we can't always be lucky huh?

i dont think we were actively pursuing halpern. we needed an offensive centerman to replace ribeiro (and ribs is much better at this department) and halpern is not one. we got johnson because the guy has speed, size and can play on a scoring and checking line (can also be used as a center if injuries plague the team).

so imo, halpern would have no purpose on this team..
unless we were able to ditch bonk.
