brah made me think about this... and I thought it would be an interesting diversion from the septic tank of the current season..
How many championships have you seen "your" teams win?
"seen" means you were old enough to understand the sport and what the championship meant, and you had to be following the team when it happened, not just the championships that your "now" team has in your lifetime
For me, in retrospect I have been pretty lucky:
NCAA hoops: UK titles in 1978, 1996, 1998, and 2012
Super Bowls: Miami Dolphins in SB VII and VIII
MLB: Reds World Series in 1975, 1976, and 1990
and of course the Miracle in 1980..
so, basically the 80's sucked, the 00's sucked, but if the pattern holds the 'teens" should be pretty good for me
NHL: Flyers before converting to a Preds fan when I moved to Nashville in 2003. Neither has won a Cup in my lifetime.
NFL: Buffalo Bills fan (born in NY); I don't even want to talk about the Bills. Haven't made the playoffs in 13 years and lost four Super Bowls in a row; this is one of the worst fanships in professional sports.
NCAAB / NCAAF: Vanderbilt; SEC Championship in basketball last year was great but I don't think that's really what is being asked here.
I don't care for baseball or the NBA. I lived in New Zealand for a year and the All Blacks rugby team is dominant, but it was nothing more than a hobby really to me.
When I first saw the title, I was thinking "seen" in the "I was there live" sense...... so I'll start with those....
4 DII football championships for my alma mater - Grand Valley State - 02, 03, 05, 06
As for others:
84 Tigers World Series (and I remember the 68 series pretty well but I was a wee lad sooooo....)
79 and 00 Michigan State Spartans NCAA hoops
I feel conflicted about the NBA - not a fan today, but as a kid was a huge Knicks fan - 73 championship I remember well, 70 I remember Reed dragging around that bad leg but then - still a wee lad..... and when I was in Houston I was a season tix holder for the Rockets and I had a strong rooting interest through the Olajuwon years - which includes the 94 & 95 championships - so maybe I take half of a rooting credit for those.
I like a lot of teams that are traditionally power houses.
Before the Titans I was a 49er fan because of Joe Montana.
I am a Yankee fan because of the Sounds affiliation when I first started following baseball and those Sounds teams were dominate.
I am a Notre Dame fan.
I was a Red Wing fan.
These days though, it's not as easy being a ND fan, aside from this past season.
The Titans and Predators well, you all know.
And I really just don't have time in the Summer for baseball anymore.
Red Sox twice, first time was in Chattanooga, TN watching at the Taco Mac bar because my ********* roommate was from NYC. After they won I drove around stunned till 3 AM then I went bat **** crazy.
Patriots 3 times, when they won the first time I was watching at a Superbowl party at a NYC friend's house looking at Adam Vinatierri kick going. 'The Pats never win....What the ****?'
Division II hockey my alma mater won the conference against our bitter rivals Nor*****, er.....Norwich. Won it on their home ice. Was good.
Couldn't care less about basketball, nor soccer, nor much else.
St. Louis Cardinals in '82, '06, and '11!! Was a schoolkid in West St. Louis County in '82 and didn't really get how special it was till I had to watch the Red Sox celebrate in old Busch Stadium. Then again, I was brought up in hockey fandom by Bill Wirtz's ******* step-child, the Blues (because he forced StL as an Expansion 6 team on the BoG so he didn't have to own the old Arena in StL)! I'm kinda used to dump-and-chase hockey from that... Converted to Nashville in '98 because Nashville became my home and we had a team!!
Braves in 95 is about it. My High school just got a royal screw job out of it's first championship in any sport. Girl's Basketball championship game (Up 9 with 6 minutes left and ZERO fouls called on the opposing team and 4 called on them) Yes I'm still mad. Vandy never has been close to any championship until the College WS (this could be the year) Never had a NFL teams until the Titans, or NHL until the Preds. Basically I chose losing and heartache to joy and triumph.
