I strongly agree. Wonky season, and it's not really worth mortgaging anything at this point just to try to slip into the top 8. Play it out, let's get some of the kids some more playing time, try to acquire some draft picks for a SK, Gill or someone else that may have some value to a playoff team and be ready to hit it next season. See what we can get with a higher draft pick, if things play out that way, and then see what shakes out when teams need to start dumping salary and UFA starts.
If this were a scientific experiment this would be an outlier. Professional sports is a case of defeat anyway. 1 out of 30 win. Some have a better chance but fact is, you are going in most likely losing.
If you had to have a season which sucks, let it be this one. It's an outlier that never should have been.
Oh, and if you think this is a season to fire Poile or Trotz. Let me ask you something. For almost a decade this team has been in the playoffs. Last year, I would say the worst decision was bringing back Radulov and even then I would say 90% of the fanbase were screaming for him back.
"Don't even listen to the fans because you will end up sitting with the fans"
For reference sake, here are our following draft picks:
1st round: (1) Our selection
2nd round: (0) No selection. Traded to Montreal in the AK deal.
3rd round: (1) Tampa bay's draft pick.
- We do not have our selection - it was traded to NYR last year for a 2012 third round pick (89th overall, Brendan Leipsic)
4th round: (3) Our selection. Buffalo's selection (part of the Gaustad deal). Toronto's selection (part of the Lombardi trade - conditional pick based on games played which has been converted).
5th round: (2) Our selection. NYR selection (We traded our 2012 5th round pick [Thomas Spelling] for their 2013 5th round pick).
6th round: (1) Our selection.
7th round: (1) Our selection.
Total: 9 selections without a selection in the 2nd round.
PS - Excellent swap of third round picks by David Poile in 2012 for Brendan Leipsic.
Agreed that Hannan needs to go but with his film it'd most likely be a late pick return. Is Kubina still a FA? If so maybe we should sign him cheap for the remainder and continue to try and put together a package for a top6 guy.
I think if we had not been dealing with these 'you obviously can't sign/keep him' threads for so long now we all kinda have short fuses on that topic. Surely folks understand, and I thought the tone (while perhaps a bit blunt) never got snippy or condescending.
Man, the last 2 Duck signings make me feel better about Rinne's and Weber's contract.
They do and they don't. They were basically going into a similar situation as we were with Weber and Suter. Everyone said Perry\Getzlaf were gone, no way they'll re-sign in season...and now they both did, long term.
I thought that was "impossible?" and every big free agent wanted to "test their value on the market?"
Tom Callahan is reporting that SK74 is pretty much done as a Predator ... It's all about "accountability to the team" and there goes his trade value.
I agree with his numbers this year and his obvious can't give a **** play they have little choice. It would be best to keep him away from the team, his trade value ow is pretty much zero.If he can't be moved in the next 24 hours they should just waive him. If he is picked up they get salary relief if not he can be in the motherland 24 hours later.
At the bare minimum heading into this season he was worth a third round pick. A good GM would still get that in return. That said, I'm guessing we are more likely to waive him than see anything higher than a 5th rounder..
