What player is your city/fanbase most protective of (historically)?

For instance, while Steve Yzerman may be the Red Wings' most cherished treasure, if you are caught saying something bad about Vladimir Konstantinov in the Detroit city limits, you will likely get shot.

Any other franchises have players like this?

Mark Messier. Even the most casual of know-nothing Rangers fans will defend him to death.

I would say Maurice Richard is a close second to Andrei Kostitsyn.

If you live in the tri-state area and you have even a remote interest in sports, you respect Mark Messier. Even if you hate hockey. Craig Carton hates the sport, but if Mark Messier walks into the room he'll shut up and bow down.

Philadelphia sports fans aren't exactly known for their reluctance to say bad things about their athletes. Two that come to mind that I don't think I've ever heard anyone say anything bad about would be Richie Ashburn (baseball) and Bernie Parent. Bobby Clarke was in that category until he became GM.

Saying anything negative about Linden is heresy

Came here to say this. It just doesn't happen in Vancouver. Conversely, everyone will crap on Messier at a moment's notice. Can't really think of a player more loathed than him actually.

I'm a Colorado fan who lives in Hamilton, so I'll just take a wild guess and say it is off limits to say anything bad about Sakic or Forsberg in Denver.

Non-hockey for Hamilton: Angelo Mosca...living legend in the Hammer

Habs fans are very protective of many of their greats but the top two IMO are:

Maurice Richard
Jean Béliveau

Unfortunately, in Denver, if you talk about Sakic or Forsberg, you generally get a blank stare from the other person, since they know nothing about hockey.

Now, if you mention anything about the Broncos, prepare for a long conversation.
