If you live in the tri-state area and you have even a remote interest in sports, you respect Mark Messier. Even if you hate hockey. Craig Carton hates the sport, but if Mark Messier walks into the room he'll shut up and bow down.
Philadelphia sports fans aren't exactly known for their reluctance to say bad things about their athletes. Two that come to mind that I don't think I've ever heard anyone say anything bad about would be Richie Ashburn (baseball) and Bernie Parent. Bobby Clarke was in that category until he became GM.
