Simple response: Jimmy Dolan and Cap recapture rule.

Lousy deal for the Rangers. Not giving up a top flight defender for a center who we hope could find his game again with a new team.

Rangers bought out Holik for about the same amount of money. Buying out Richards is not going to be an issue.

However, if they were smart, they wait until fummer of 2014 to do it.

See what we can get out of Brad for next season and the PO's.

and as Trxjw stated, cap recapture issues prevents any trade from happening.

Rangers can't really afford to deal a defenseman for a center.

James Dolan paid Larry Brown $40 million to NOT coach for the Knicks. He paid Stephon Marbury $20 million in a single year to NOT play basketball for the Knicks. He's happily bought out much more expensive contracts. If there is one thing that Dolan deserves appreciation for, it's that he'll sacrifice his bank account in any way he possibly can if it's for the good of the team. If Sather comes to the conclusion that buying out Richards is in the best interest of the Rangers then Dolan is going to sign the check to make it happen. No doubt about it.

If you're going to be condescending like that at least put in the effort to figure out the context of the conversation. The point made initially was that if Richards gets his head out of his ass then our use for Stastny would be limited, seeing as we already have our top two center spots filled. And it would be especially stupid for us to move a defenseman for that player we don't have a spot for. The other guy then decided post Richards' underwhelming stat-line this season, as if to indicate that 25 subpar games is a good indicator of what our needs are and how good Richards is. This was never a Stastny vs. Richards debate.

I know it wasn't...I just wanted to make a point about small sample sizes vs large sample sizes. [This was secretly meant for leaf fans because we are destined for another inevitable Stastny to Toronto thread]

I don't think the Rangers need Stastny and I don't get why they would want to buy out Richards. Seems like everyone was thrilled to finally get him on the Rangers 2 years ago, there are bound to be ups & downs over the course of his contract.

No you didn't. You're just trying to save face now. Good try.

Stajan has 17 points in 26 games and is better defensively than Stastny. Maybe the Rangers would give us McDonagh for him....

Iginla has scored 50 goals multiple times, won scoring titles, multiple major trophies. Is he the same player today? The player he was, was worth three times what he's worth today. Let's take both into context. Stastny has had multiple bad years in a row now. He is not the 70 point rookie he once was.

He's been fine. He'll be bought out in 2014.

We have no one to replace him at the moment.
