Drouin is a winger. But I completely agree but not at the expense of Jake Gardiner.

Is it risky to put Gards with Phaneuf?

Why? Gardiner can make up for Dion's lack of mobility. Plus Dion's been carrying Holzer and Kostka all year. Gardiner would be a breath of fresh air.

Nope. Maybe it would be under Rotten Ronnie when D-men were told to pinch much more than they had to but Dion has worked with much worse this year.

relax guys, he will be a good player in the future. carlyle will push him, he must be ready for big minutes, but on this team he may not look good and might start piling on minuses,
than what do we say about him?
playing with dion, not a good idea, needs to play with fraser. 15 to 18 min a game, on when kadri's line is on and PP
franson with liles

Why? Because Dion is not a stay at home D man.. putting him with Gardiner is not a good fit because they both are offensive minded. Dion needs a stable #2 who will stay at home when he feels like roaming. Gards is not that guy.

Dion is hardly offensive minded on ES now...and that's how Carlyle wants him to play right now.

Dion is not a Karlsson and doesn't need a Methot-esque player to be successful.

Just using the OTT guys as an example.

Time for Dion to step up and be the player he thinks he is. Top d-men make their partner better not they need their partner to cover all their own mistakes. I'm tired of hearing this. We need a top 4 d man to man the second unit, not to save Dion's ***. Sick and tired of hearing this.
Or maybe he has? Funny how Gunnar was suddenly a solid defensive presence when playing with Phaneuf. As was Aulie. Kostka almost looked like an NHL dman for a bit even. Funny with all these AHL defensemen (who look absolutely terrible when not with him) he still manages to put up 1d stats eh?

Do you even watch the Leafs at all? I'm guessing with your Komisarek comments and Gunnar comments you haven't much this year?

That's because he has to cover up for all his weak partners. Would you feel comfortable jumping into the rush knowing Holzer was back there?

What about:
Phaneuf-Komi
Fraser-Franson
Gards-Kostka

Ease Gards in, would def make it clear to Komi what his role is, would allow Dion to jump in more.

Komi has some of the worst d-zone man coverage I have ever seen from an NHL defenceman, and I'm actually one of those who thinks he's better than people give him credit for. Giving him first-pairing minutes would likely spell disaster and Phaneuf would still be stuck trying to do two peoples' jobs all over again. I don't think it would work.

The fate of team now rests in the hands of a 7th D-Callup .... recovering from a concussion.

this should go over well.

Not surprisingly, I disagree.

Komi looked terrible trying to fit in to a run and gun style offense. He can't play that game. He's not mobile enough and not programmed for it. The one thing he does really well is take the man. We sorely miss that. Pair him with Phaneuf in a Carlyle system and his role is predetermined. Be the stay at home guy. No pinching, no floating, just be ready to stop the other team. I often found watching him that it seemed as if he was unsure if whether he should jump in or not, which often led to disastrous lapses.
